Hello. I'm a guitar player. This forum seems be where the best informed experts on the web hang out. I'm trying to decide what to get for my home studio so have been learning all about them here before I take the plunge. A generic thanks to all for words of wisdom I've picked up so far from dozens of threads. Downside is that it's just made me dither all the more about my choice of guitar :)

I just got a new USA Fender Deluxe V-Neck Strat. It is a fabulous guitar and the quality control and build is truly excellent, especially for a Fender :)

What studio gear are you going for?

Lovely, my Strat's a MIM but has been nicely sorted professionally. I'm more often on my Taylor or an old bouzouki though.

Basswise, I'm after sthg at the budget end but versatile; it's never going to be gigged and will spend most of its time played seated going straight into Ardour (I'm a Linux user & Ardour is a world class DAW if you've not come across it). I'm into dynamics, detail and clarity.

I'd really like something very versatile; enough to give me everything from a thumpy double bass sound to a normal rock sustain. And with a thin neck. So I'm sniffing around Squier VMs or Yamahas but to be honest am still feeling my way around after staring at specs & trying things in shops for what feels like months.

Ibanez have some seriously thin necks which may help you transistion from guitar to bass easier.

Your best bet is to take your guitar with when bass shopping and then see how easy it is for you to go back and forth between the two with little adjustment time.

Thanks Longhair. I know I want something like a jazz neck vs a fat precision neck. Have also been thinking about a shortie as the change in neck length probably takes more getting used than neck diameter. But getting a quality versatile shortie seems unlikely, so I'll have to compromise somewhere. I tried an Epi EB0 and liked the thump but nothing else comes out. Full of clarity and detail it is not.

Don't know much about the Ibanez range so any pointers for these and Yammies would be much appreciated. Or come to that, any other well made comfortable and versatile instruments.

It depends how long you've been playing I suppose, but changing from bass to guitar and back doesn't present any strange problems really, and you'll do it without thinking after a short while. I would go for a normal 34" scale bass.

I think I would go secondhand for your bass, and I wouldn't hesitate to get one from the Basschat Marketplace. Also it will retain most of it's value if you want to upgrade to a better bass when you're ready. We have a feedback section here too so you can see who you're buying from. Warwicks have 38mm Fender Jazz nut width so maybe a Warwick Rockbass will suit you too. They are great basses and very versatile, the active ones even more so.

Ta silddx. I think I've already realised I'm going to end up buying 2nd hand and I've been wandering around the marketplace threads today. Good to know about the feedback section, thx for that tip.

Of course the choice just confuses me all the more.

If it was purely aesthetics, I'd probably get a hollow body but I think that might be 1. really limiting and 2. too bulky for a little home studio.

I'm not a brand slave (if anything I like stuff out of the ordinary). But I'm not keen on the look of the Rockbass. There's sthg teletubbies about it. Maybe looks shouldn't really matter but when you're not playing it, it's staring at you from the corner.

Still on the look out and getting confused by all those Yammy numbers :)

Post a question in the bass guitars section about the Yams, you should get a lot of answers  http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=16

What's your budget? You should get a good S/H Yam BB for very little, I used to borrow my mate's cheap BB 20 years ago, it was a very good bass.

No real pointers on Ibanez. I tend to gravitate towards them because it was my first real bass way back when... At one time I've had too many basses for my own good - Aria Pro II, Charvel, Kramer, Jackson (all late 80's / early 90's) and keep going back to the Ibanez RD707. Life happened to where I stopped playing and 20 years passed before I picked up a new Ibanez SR500 bass. Not too long after that I found an Ibanez RD727 (different inlay as the 707) off of ebay and sold the SR500.

Today I am trying to teach myself how to play guitar and re-learn bass without all the bad habits of before not to be in a band or anything, just for myself and the computer.
