Alternative Active PA Speaker for The Mackie Srm350 or RCF's

I'm starting my own function band, mainly duo or trio work. I've played in countless function bands for years, but I'm looking at active speakers, as they work better and is less to carry. I already have the ole marshall acoustic amp, which I've used in the past.

I was just wondering .. is there an alternative to the standard the mackie srm 350's or the RCF's??

Going to have the same problem ourselves..but I think there might be more value and less weight in passives.

EV do a nice line of small passive subs with 12"..and I am thinking we could rather carry these and bi-amp them from a controller than get a single that is much bigger and heavier.

LD do a series which we might look at..and we have put our money into quality tops ..the sub is less so important.

We would like an ICS500...but they aren't many around and it might be a little heavy.

Depends on what you can carry

I favour the EV 120 type series... or Ramsa but both are passive, IIRC.

The LD's actives look interesting.. if a speaker has a higher spl db rating and both speakers are the same watts.. would the higher spl db, mean it would be louder or better..

I've had some LD Stinger 15A's for a while. bought from Thomann so I don't need to deal with LD.. One of them was delivered damaged by parcel crusher force, thomann replaced without a murmur.. Wooden build, Eminence Kappalite 3015/BMS tweeter, B&O Class D 500W.. they sound excellent, and at 60 odd lbs pretty portable.. I use them as a Stereo keyboard rig so I'm quite fussy.... They're very clear and loud..

see here... http://www.thomann.de/gb/ld_systems_ldeb_152a.htm
I'd steer clear of LD Systems all together.... had too many issues with them in the past.... and their customer service is non existent!
LOuder, more efficient, IMO...

but tbh, I take little notice of published SPL's... and all the marketing stuff means not a lot until you hear them.

We have looked at them ourselves but haven't pulled the trigger yet..I still fancy the EV's passive ( more bang for buck and less carry..?? ) and that seems to be our main decision..active or passive.

If you have your heart set on Mackies, I am sure they are a cut above, and e-bay is full of them so let me know what you end up with and your thoughts.

I use a QSC K10 with my double bass but they are primarily active PA speakers @1,000w and very good with it. Only minus is I sent a query to QSC tech dept and never got a reply. Never mind, who am I? Still buy with confidence, lots of pro sound guys use them.

We got a pair of Mackie SA1521's for £550. To be fair, they're heavy beasts, but they're damn loud and handle the whole band, including me exclusively, I run straight in with my Sansamp. I had a compliment on Sunday night for my sound, he was shocked to hear I didn't run through a dedicated amp.

If you've got the room and strength (or just two people for carrying) to transport them, I highly recommend them.

To be honest, I'll only use them for vocals and acoustic guitars, and just use my cab for bass.. I might send a bass with a cut low freq through them, then later in the year get a sub for the bigger stuff.. also the small cab is better for my healing shoulder and easier for smaller gigs
