pantherairsoft Posted January 16, 2011 Share Posted January 16, 2011 Hi folks, At the Notts Bass Bash before Xmas there was a fair bit of interest in the concept of my 2-piece Dubstep/Electronica/Beakbeat style project and Inpromised I'd let people know when it was leaving the studio. Well, Feb 4th sees us playing the 'Fresh Produce' Dubstep night at The Maze in Nottingham. Thus far we will be the only live band on that night along side a number of guest DJ's specialising in breakbeat and dubstep. So for those of you interested in seein and hearing what we do... The doors are at 9 and the night apparently gets busy from 10-10:30. We Shoul therefore be on around 11 and then DJ's will take over until 3am (long after I'm already home and tucked up in bed!) phil.i.stein Posted February 5, 2011 Share Posted February 5, 2011 i went to see Shep in full tap-dancing action last night. i couldn't believe how full the sound was, considering the line-up (1 x analog fuelled bass guitar + 1 accoustic drum kit). the depth and breadth of noises, sub notes and synth swells were very impressive, and each track had it's own unique soundscape due to the different combinations of fx and how they morphed together. the playing was varied too, sometimes sustained, relying on the expression pedals to alter pitch or volume, etc.., and at other times more coherent fretless fingerstyle playing. he's a funky man aswell as a pedal uber-geek (only pulling your leg mate, i'm only jealous ). the drummers' timing was solid, the playing very varied and creative, with great use of different snare and cymbal combinations. it was paradiddle-dandy, and created lots of cross-rhythms to switch easily between dubstep and d'n'b style rhythms. the audience were extremely receptive and enjoyed it immensely. i think he opened quite a few peoples' eyes in terms of how electronica can be crafted from more rock-based instruments. from the perspective of a bass-player who enjoys electronic music aswell as more traditional fare, this is inspiring, cutting-edge stuff. i would urge anyone with similar interests to go and see them, as i understand that it may become a regular event. for a first gig it was shockingly good, and Shep remained cool as a cucumber throughout it. do i have any negative criticism ? - well it could have been louder, but i felt the same about the DJ sets that followed, so that was a house PA thing. maybe i just like it stupidly loud. anyway, good work fella. i can't wait to hear the forthcoming studio results. The turnout was a little smaller than expected, bit with the 50mph wind outside I'm not that surprised. The reception was stunning and pretty much getting mobbed afterwards by DJ's wanting to do some remix and/or collaboration work made us feel like we did something right. I think the extra studio time put in before hitting the live scene has paid off... Getting that dynamic as a 2 piece without samples or midi has been tough and the material written in the last few months (like the first 2 tracks last night) are clearly a step forwards for us. The promoter tells me the Venue manager wants to book us for more events this year and we have a few things on the boil with some pretty big clubs so fingers crossed.
