geoffbyrne Posted November 29, 2010 Share Posted November 29, 2010 The J pickup-pair are humbucking when both on together. Turning one off should introduce buzz (if there is any around). LemonCello Posted January 5, 2011 Author Share Posted January 5, 2011 Update on this. The '96 P makes the Amp buzz but the buzz diminishes when I touch the bridge. The jack socket is also crackly when I 'jiggle' the pin in it. Any more ideas? Just wondering whether the jack socket has a dry solder joint? flyfisher Posted January 5, 2011 Share Posted January 5, 2011 Give the jack plug a good clean and the guitar socket as well, if possible. Could be that you're not getting a good earth connection between the two. The tip (and ring, where used) connections in a jack plug/socket are spring-loaded, so there is a 'positive' connection. The sleeve connection usually just relies on the sleeve of the plug laying in contact with the barrel of the socket, which doesn't give such a 'positive' connection, especially if the socket hole is near the top end of the diameter tolerance. Try applying some sideways force to the jack plug when it's in the socket and wiggle it a bit to break through any surface grime. No guarantees, but it's an easy thing to try and might reveal a problem. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Have you got dimmer switches fitted to the lights ? is it less of a problem with the lights off ? Triac dimmers alter the shape of the mains waveform, and the resulting sharp edge seems to radiate. More a buzz than a hum. My Mex Precision with USA pups does it in my house, but my Bitsa Precision with Kent Armstrongs doesnt, both wired identically so it strikes me that reckon some pickups are better than others at rejecting hum. The Amp is an old Peavey 300, but it doesn't buzz with my new VMJ. I think I'll be in the market soon anway for a new(er) and light(er) Amp than the Peavey.
