Goodfellow Custom Classic (1985)

One thing a broken leg and an operation do for you ... they certainly make you re-think your priorities. :)

An unexpected side-effect of my rather unfortunate last two weeks is that I've decided I really need to re-structure my collection of basses, perhaps into something that's less of a "collection" and more a few basses that I play all the time.

So I'm launching half-a-dozen 'For Sale' topics today. I'm quoting a price in each case, but if you think it appropriate then feel free to make me an offer. The worst that can happen is that I'll tell you that you can f*** right off, mate. :)

As if ...

Anyway.

This is a fairly early example of Bernie's work, when he was still operating as "Goodfellow" rather than as "GB".

Plenty more pics are at http://tinypic.com/a/1iwwj/3

I bought this from Schnozzalee, original threads are here ( http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39115&st=0 ) and here ( http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry608621 ).

Despite the "coffee table" looks, this is a seriously practical bass. The tones are rich and smooth and the range runs from near-P-bass thump to modern and bright. I neither slap nor tap so I can't offer any opinion on that. With the other controls properly set for your playing style, the only knob you ever need to touch on stage is the Pan control (the one with the wide brass ring around it).

The other controls are Volume, and below that Treble / Mid / Bass all of which are cut/boost with a central detente.

The usual little Bernie touches are there, including the thumbrest scoop on the tops of the pickups (why has no one else copied this idea?) and the wooden grips to the tuning machines. Fitted with Schaller straplocks.

Up close, the quilted maple top reminds me of snorkelling in The Bahamas and looking down at the sand a few feet below me. Poetic, or what?

Scale: 34"
Weight: 9 1/4 lbs
Width at Nut: 1 5/8"
String spacing at Bridge: 19 mm

In true Basschat fashion, I'm looking for what I paid (i.e. no profit) which was £900.

Best option would be collection from Chiswick. Second best would be collection from the West End. If someone wants it posted, then we'd also have to factor the cost of a hard case into the deal.

Edit: Spuggy was interested in this bass, but decided not to proceed because it might not turn out to be a good bass for 'lap' playing. The body shape does make it slightly tail heavy, not particularly noticeable but certainly more so than a typical P-bass or J-bass. This message brought to you in the interests of completeness.

Best description of the facing i've heard, although, never been to the bahamas - I bought this off a big welsh guy who was looking for a musicman to knock about during pub gigs instead of ruining the lovely timbers. However absolutely flawless build, solid and loud, loud, loud with plenty of versatility, I can tap but I don't slap and the tappings gooood. Uber light too. Jack's a top chap to deal with. Sorry to hear about the broken leg! You sound just as unlucky as me :).
