megallica
If I tune my 5 string EADGC will it put any extra tension on the neck?
michael-faces
The bass would be able to handle the tension, but wouldn't you need to get a new nut? Otherwise the E string would be loose in the B string space. Also, you might have to adjust the truss rod after changing it. One of my friends has a a six string bass tuned to guitar tuning and it works really well.
markstuk
Or you could restring it with the correct weight strings - unless you like very tight strings... This would be the implied issue with the previous post..
megallica
I need a new nut for this bass anyway - just bought it and fancied defretting it and tuning it to EADGC. Thanks for the helpful advice
Faithless
If you're after a defretted (and fret-markered) 5string tuned E-C, that's what I got for ya http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=94843 cheap as chips, good for trying fretless out - it's not for everyone tastes.. easy Faith
Protium
You can't tune a low B 5 string set up to EADGC, you will need to get a set with a high C (usually .020 to .030 gauge) instead. IIRC the high C is slightly tighter than the low B, so you may need a little tweak on the the set up.

I was going to buy a four string set and then an indiviual C or light guage G?
Faithless
Elixir sells individual B and C strings, although they're not the cheapest. There are some manufacturers in UK that offer custom strings. Newtone maybe?

Protium
Stringbusters stock a few 5 string sets with a high C, and also rotosound singles.
