Hey guys, i am considering getting a stomp to replace my pedalboard and part of my live setup and have a few questions if anyone can help.

I have basic understanding as to how to use it and create my patches and stuff, but i was just curious, before i go and shed the dough for it, how it handles live and practice situations, and by that i mean, i can take my full rig at a gig(pedalboard, amp and cab), but for practice i might just pick up the pedal and put it through either PA or a generic bass amp(let's call it a hartke :)) ).

So is it possible to create 3 patches, one for my amp with cab(basically just my pedalboard which contains compressor,DG B3k,Sansamp and noise gate), one for a generic amp(pedalboard + amp and cab sim), and one for PA(pedalboard+amp and cab sim)?

And if that's possible, in the first situation would i be able to just plug it into my normal(active) amp input and then take the DI out for the FOH from the amp as per usual?

In the 2nd situation(let's assume for argument's sake that i need DI from this too) will i use the Stomp in the effects loop and then DI out of the Stomp for FOH/PA?

And in the 3rd situation i assume i just DI out into the FOH/PA?

But after looking online a lot another question springs to mind, it doesn't have an XLR DI output, i can only see 2 balanced jack outputs, so will i need a separate DI box or can i just get a TRS to XLR small cable and it should work?

I know it's a big message. Hope it makes sense. Thanks in advance ;)

    Cheers.

It's entirely possible I've misremembered, or missed some crucial detail somewhere... I've done a bit of googling and can't seem to find it again, so presumably it's not a massive issue if it's not on every HPF FAQ on the internet!

PA tops are designed to go full range or crossover (removing the low frequencies) when using a sub so I can’t see it being an issue.

Probably not what you want to read, Rabbie, but a couple of weeks ago at a rehearsal I unplugged my ply DB from my bass rig (AI Clarus II into a Crazy Eight) and plugged instead into the Hi-Z input on my cheap-as-chips Behringer XR18 wireless mixer, going into a pair of cheap-as-chips 1x10 PA wedges. Just out of curiosity. That channel on the PA had no special processing set up, no compression or low cut, no FX or anything.

I was surprised to hear that the damned thing sounded very nearly as good through the cheap PA as it had through well over a grand's worth of specialist kit. Just a bit boomy.

So I dug out my HPF and put that in the signal chain: DB -> HPF -> XR18 -> Powersoft Digam power amp -> cheap 1x10 wedges.

Now it sounded just as good and - apart from the HPF - everything I was using was stuff that would be taken to a gig anyway for use by the band.

It's worth experimenting with the kit you already have lying around before going the specialist mic route ...

Thanks Jack - I’ve had an XR18 for around 3 years now and hadn’t noticed that there were Hi-Z inputs on there! Doh! That opens up opportunities. Thanks for the heads-up.

  4. This is something that you can easily do yourself. Learning how will save you a fortune over the years. I’m sure they’ll be plenty of you tube how-to guides but the personal approach I’ve always found works best. I’m sure someone local will be along soon to offer help (it’s that kind of place).

It had a zero-mod fitted, if you recall from a couple of years back.

I'm thinking about getting a zero mod thumb rest thingy for my 2018 4003S. I stuck a post in the items wanted section a couple of days ago and it's had 6 views lol. Are they a worthwhile addition (I usually play my Pic aggressively with a pick as that is what they are for but it's nice to have the option). if anyone has one they no longer need please send me a PM. (sorry for the thread hijack but I did try to dress it up as a discussion point  😷

Currently watching - going great @mr zed! You're playing great - see? No stress!

Thanks for that - a quivering wreck inside. Happier playing than getting involved in the q&a though. Heard the Oasis/Blur question and disappointed the compère shut that down. Overall, happy with the way it went. I’ll watch it back tomorrow. Thanks for posting the YouTube link.

  7. We spent the evening setting up the mics and getting a good balanced sound into the desk in the control room. The foldback sound was OK in the studio but a couple of monitor wedges will be set up this evening for the vocals. We are not using in-ears for this which is a shame however volume levels were quite low to avoid spill into any open mics. The sound engineer recorded a few tracks and will tweak the levels this afternoon based upon these recordings. Cameras are being set up this afternoon as well and we will aim to arrive at 7:00pm for a quick run through/final tweaks before going 'on-air' at 8:30pm BST. Enjoying the process so far and looking forward to this evening although a little apprehensive as I've only been with this band a month or so and i'm likely to pink torpedo-up at some stage.
