1. Sorry if I sound dim but what's the idea of the thumb rest below the G string?
2.
Have a look at www.riverstudios.co.uk We're in Southampton and we know what we're doing.... Chris
Hey Chris, I booked in with a tutor at another local studio before I saw your post. If it doesn't work out I will be in touch!
3. I've looked at youtube vids but can't seem to get the slapping technique. Most don't tell you where you should rest your arm and whether the hand should hover or rest on the body. It seems everyone plays slightly different with some teaching you to directly hit the string and others saying you should hit the bottom part of the string and end up with thumb on next string down. then there's those who say your thumb should be pointing upwards and others saying it should be perpendicular. It confused me as whatever method I tried either my fingers hit the body or my palm touched the strings. I decided to have lessons so a tutor could tell me what I'm missing or doing wrong. Last thing I want is to develop bad habits. It's harder to unlearn something than learn from scratch. I doubt I will play slap much but I'd like to have the option of doing so and welcome a new challenge.
4. You're right but a bit difficult for a girl to say to a bloke in his house....lol
5. Also... I would check whatever he's done to your truss rod too.....and check the intonation... I asked whether it would affect the intonation and he said it wouldn't. He adjusted it as there was a slight string buzz in the middle section of the neck. It has cured it and intonation is fine.
6. How is he proficient if he hasn't got the basic and most important element nailed? It's his job to dictate the tempo You have to be truthful and tell him. Record a song and play it back using a bpm counter to demonstrate. If after using a metronome it doesn't improve; find a replacement drummer. You cannot compromise the band's performance for one person even if they are a friend.
7. Vet ? I spent 15 mins on the phone to him and gave him the 3rd degree....lol. Seriously, I made it clear what I wanted and he said all the right things. Guitarist he definitely is and probably gets away with making money giving bass lessons to beginners if slap isn't involved. Gotta laugh at one thing....He asked me to choose a simple song on bass that our band covers. I gave him Pink's 'Raise Your Glass'. can't get simpler than a 4 note jobby on root notes! His reply was: 'how about something more rocknroll like Buddy Holly. I can play a 12 bar and got nothing against Bud, but man, it's difficult to get the passion if it's not your thing. Teach me theory using contemporary songs. Good job I never said Plug In baby by Muse....lol Forgot to add that when I asked why his technique was different to what I'd seen on youtube vids, he obviously clicked that I noticed he wasn't get that slap pop so he blamed my bass saying it wasn't suitable for slap. I have a Sterling Ray34 by Musicman.
8. Wanted to learn slap alongside a bit of theory so looked up local tutors and arranged to go for my first lesson tonight. Spent first 5 mins waiting for him to finish chatting with a previous learner Next 10 mins checking my bass over and suggesting truss rod adjustment, which he proceeded to do with a cheap screwdriver before I could query it. I then intervened and asked when we going to start so he spent the next 2 mins setting up a drum beat and writing out tab to teach me 1st's & 5th's, (which I already knew). At this point I asked if we could move onto the slap and show me how to position my arm, hand correctly. He showed me how to slap the E string and it was at this point I felt like bashing him with my headstock. He looked very awkward so I asked him how much slap he has played and he said 'very little' he is more of a 'theory man' and maybe I would be better off with a tutor who specialised in bass. Why the hell didn't he tell me this before arranging lessons! Didn't even have the decency to let me off with only paying half the fee. Looked forward to this and am absolutely gutted that all I came away with was an empty purse. So if there are any decent tutors around Southampton who can play what they teach and will not beat around the bush to drag out my learning in order to line their pockets, let me know!
9. A sought after collectors item! This is a 2011 model and one of the last made. Colour is Arctic White. Comes in hardcase with case candy and certificate of authentication. Amazing action and great sound! Full details can be found on the Fender site. Only taken out of the case to try before buying and not used since. Absolutely mint condition! With Fender about to increase prices this is a bargain at £1800 I would not risk posting or courier service so collection would be preferable. 11. I'm playing octaves that for the most part follow the guitar chord progression. However, I am playing an F# when he plays an Eb minor chord. Our guitarist says this is not musically correct. Is he right? Here is the chord progression with bass octaves next to it: Guitar Bass C# C# octave (2 bars) F minor F# octave (2 bars) Bb Bb octave (2 bars) Eb minor F# octave (1 bar) C - Ab Ab (1 bar) Cheers
12. Hi all, My band are covering Duran Duran's Planet Earth. I know I won't get an exact sound but would like to get as near as possible. What sort of settings should I aim for on bass and amp? I use a Sterling bass by Musicman and Markbass head with a Schroder cab. Cheers for any help.

16. Being the owner of several basses and guitars something has to go. So for swap is my ArtB100 which has never been used. I had Schaller straplocks fitted when I bought it and since purchase it has been stored in a hardcase still bearing the tags. It will come in the original box so ideal for a Xmas present. Please note: this is a full size bass but has a short scale, which is ideal for those with smaller fingers. Ideally I am looking for a decent Ibanez 5 string. Or A Fender Strat in white with maple neck. Alternatively £300 for bass and hardcase, which is a saving of £150 for brand new.

18. Was learning 3 at the same time: Can't Get Enough Of Your Love - Bad Company Crazy little Thing Called Love - Queen Time Is Running Out - Muse :0)
19. One of the best heads ever. Powerful and reliable. Good luck, I'm sure someone will snap it up but maybe knock you down a bit.
