1. I do love me some metal but don't play it as much as I'd like. Most of the metal bands from round here do the KsE/Trivium thing, whereas I'm more into Tool, Isis, Neurosis, Botch, Mastodon and SikTh (amongst others). Main inspiration would probably be Jeff Caxide of Isis, although all the bands I listed have got top bass players.

  2.
$700 seems good for a stingray.... I wouldn't have said £700 was much of a bargain.

That £700 would get you a brand fire new one in the states, and there's no way that VAT, import duty and shipping should be doubling the price. It certainly didn't when I imported my OLP MM32 (which I only did because they weren't available in the UK when I got it). Fair enough if people want to pay £700 for a 2nd hand one, but it seems well over the odds to me....

And personally I would (and do!) have one of the HH OLPs over a SUB. Sure, the setup from the factory on the OLPs may not be as good as the SUBs, but they're cheap enough to budget for a setup in the cost - and you also get the HH, active, 3EQ setup which you don't with the SUB. Depends if you're more concerned about brand name on the headstock and resale value, or the sounds and versatility, I suppose.... but my OLP sounds the nuts. Now if only I could play it well enough to do it justice.... :)
With regards to the bit in bold, yes you can get a brand new StingRay for the equivalent of about £700 in the US, but as far as I know you aren't allowed to import them brand new. By that I mean that you can't order one from somewhere like Bass Central and have it delivered to the UK, you actually have to go over there and buy one, then bring it back with you.

Not positive, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

  3. I much prefer the ABMs to the MAGs, having tried both in practices and (crucially) at gigs. I was using a MAG combo when I went to Bass Central a couple of years ago and, no matter what I did, every bass I tried sounded very similar thanks to the colouration. As a result I was a bit wary when I turned up to a gig a few months later and the house amp was an ABM 4x10 combo, but I loved it. I never really thought of myself as a more "vintage" tone lover, but that ABM combo really hit the spot. So much so that I've just bought an ABM 500 head :)

  4. Gorgeous bass, and I know what you mean about being able to hear the inadequecies in your playing. Whenever I switch from my ATK to the Corvette I can't believe how much clearer all those mistakes come through. Hope you do find time to enjoy it, I can't imagine how hard it must be to get any practice in when you're working 65 hours a week!

  5.
OMG you guys don't half winge about EMA.

All i can see here is the people who dont get ema complaining about the fact that someone else gets it.

I bet if everyone who has been complaining about it GOT ema they wouldn't be complaining about it!

    -Jake
Well obviously, who would complain about getting free money?

(Sorry Luke, back to the basses!)

  6.
when you say drone , do you mean like a driving bass line?
compressors work a wonder when im playing 'powerpop' driving bass lines :)
He means drone as in the style of music. Listen to Earth

+1 to everything dannbuoy said. I'd probably add something like a Headrush or DL4 for a bit of looping/layering as well.

  7. Just got a new (well, second hand) Ashdown ABM head courtesy of NoirBass (or Chris, as he's known in real life). Not only did it come with a cover and the original warranty card, he even went out of his way to deliver it right to my front door. Top bloke and a pleasure to do business with, cheers!

  8.
Its a flawed system needless to say, but when your trying to implement something over such a grand scale you obviously cant please everyone!

I mean, My Stepbrother lives 40% here with his dad, and 60% with his mum. (there or there abouts) His mums a hairdresser single mum etc, fair enough, EMA. What they fail to pick up on is that his dad (my stepdad) Is an MD at BAE, and a percentage of his pay goes into her account every month anyway. Like i said, a flawed system. But at least they're trying.
This is actually pretty much what I meant by saying it was a rubbish idea. What I should have said is that while it is, in theory, a good idea, it's been poorly executed. To add to Ste's example, my mate's parents are divorced and he lives with his mum, brother and sister. Because he's in a single-parent household he got EMA (he's now at university, where I believe he also gets extra funding), but what isn't taken into account is that his dad is ridiculously filthy rich and not only supports him financially directly but even has enough to pay the mortgage on the house he lives in!

Also, to be fair to BB, you make a good point. If I was in your position I'd definitely be taking all I could get. I don't agree that it's hard to get a job though. The only problem I've ever had with trying to find a job is my own inability to get off my arse and fill in some application forms. Don't rule out going to agencies either - a friend of mine gave his CV to an agency (nothing more than GCSE's, a couple of AS Levels) and got an interview for an admin job the next day.
