1. mine's called Baby as the drummer said "wow look at that baby" when he saw it first time - and as the band's called The Razors I kind of like the "baby's playing with Razors again" joke....... ( I know.... sorry :) )

  2. yeah that's what I use at the mo - great for no feedback but not the most refined sound - hence the idea for a bracket to use EMGs + the schaller rattles worse than my beetle engine. I have bass max a well and use it with a fishman platimun pro (which is excellent) - great sound but feeds back at the volume I need to play at :)

  3. I know it won't be a true DB sound but I reckon it will be better than a schaller and hopefully no feedback!

  4. or plug in a couple of hundred quid extra and get this one - perfect

worse case it's a great ply bass but you might even end up with it being hybrid or full carved... if only I hadn't just bought one :)

  5. Ok... well Thomann's stuff is good gedo-musik.de do some good ones as well but you'll need to pay for them to be set up (£200-£400) depending where you go what you have done etc.

the one on gumtree - your guess is as good as mine, can't tell form the pictures really so you need to take someone along to have a look.

Your best bet is to get a secondhand ply bass (pref an old B&H or something like that) that's been regularly played - they do come up on ebay regularly for between £400-£800; if they won't deliver, ask on here you might find someone that will drop it off for you (or a few people that will shuffle it along)

A better idea for you for the moment would be to hire one - lots of schools/councils have hire schemes and you can get used to playing one for little outlay and risk - I had one for six months, cost me £18! bargain and then I knew what I was loooking for when I went to buy

    hope that helps

    PS don't go for a 4/4 - they're a pain to sell on!

  6. our old drummer had a top of the range roland kit with mackie speakers and sub woofer and it was brilliant - great to be able to change drum sounds to suit the song (or part of the song) saying that tho it wasn't any smaller than an acoustic kit with all that added.

Current drummer uses a cheap yamaha electronic kit for practice and yes - it's crap :)

  7.
Anyone who knows my thoughts on this will know that I am not that bothered by the set up - I knew that, whatever I had, I would have to adapt my technique. What I needed was to make sure my instrument was credible and that it wasn't a total piece of junk. After that, I woudl find my way over time. I had a bass before on loan for six months so knew what to expect but to suggest that I would have an informed opinion on set up woudl be disingenuous. I am in no position to decide what my ideal set up woudl be so go with the flow. As I develop and learn, I can form an opinion and get any modifications I need made as and when it makes sense to do so.
As usual excellent advice from Mr B - exactly the approach I've taken - when I know what I'm talking about then that's the time to form an opinion on what needs to be adjusted. I took the approach of getting a well maintained bass from a professional player and I'll adjust my playing technique to play it - it's working brilliantly at the mo!

  8. sounds like rubbish to me - thomann do some great carved basses new for £850 ish (33 model) To be honest you'll probably be better of with a 60's - 80s ply bass anyway if you're going gigging as they're far more stable and robust.

Bilbo got an excellent fully carved bass that looks the mutts nuts for just over £1000 from gedo-musik as well so unless a) you know the repairs are superbly and professionally done b ) you really fancy a Gewa, I'd avoid it - I'd certainly want to play it for a long while to make sure I liked it

Just my sunday "I'm feeling brutal tonight" opinion! :)

  9. Hi

I've got a double bass and an electric and I was wondering if there is such a thing as a footswitch that can take two inputs and switch which one goes to the amp? If it was a pre amp with different settings for each input channel that would be superb - can't find anything though - any ideas?

    thanks
