1.
I suspect that as you hit one side of the string to compress it, it'll just spread in the opposite direction.
Next thought of cider drinker engineering, pliers in a vice, use the vice to put additional force on them and hope they don't snap.

2. Basically I'm making progress on deciding a new rig, i'm planning on using my bass pod pro as a preamp, then using a poweramp and probably some kind of 8x10 cab underneath it all.
However I'm wondering if a standard power amp for PA systems is any good, or if I should be looking at a specific kind? Probably looking to spend £200 tops but preferably less on one.

Cheers,
Ross

3. If you know what you're doing and have the proper tools for the job.
My next thought would be to use a mallet and blunt masonry chisel with as little force as you can get away with to compress the string in at the end.

4. Not really.
My soldering iron heats up in under a minute, cost me less than a fiver from maplin (think they're about a tenner nowadays). Would take a minute tops to desolder and resolder a couple of wires, it's damn near impossible to mess up. And you could put it on to heat whilst gaining access to the pickups.
Even if it would take longer, why wouldn't you take a few extra minutes to do the job properly?
Any crimp terminals you use are going to be an inferior connection and less reliable (more likely to come loose) and where audio quality is concerned, why cut corners on something like wiring? Anyway whenever I've used crimp terminals I use bullet connectors.

5. Does anyone still actually own a kettle with a lead? I thought they all used detachable bases nowadays?

My amp came without a mains lead, been using a lead I got from maplin for years, no idea what it's rated to, I should probably check.

4 String
Always looking to try new things (mostly unsuccessfully).

I do kind of go for this whole prog rock thing but some more complex stuff I have a tendancy to be able to "kind of play".
At home though it's a lot of soul music, plenty of James Jamerson.

Oh and I can't slap to save my life, I've tried it so many times but decided I don't really need to learn how to play it. Also can't play with a pick.
My stage prescence lies in tacky dance moves reminicent of childhood discos.

7. Epiphone thunderbird through a fender rumble 100 combo. - 4-5 years ago
Fender Jazz through a bass pod pro, through the same rumble 100 combo. - Today

Still searching for a new amp (It's a bit of a wallpaper paste amp thisun) but my project bass is coming in way over budget so it's been put off for a while.

Kind of wish I still had the thunderbird though, it had a nice boomy sound and played ok sat down. I stupidly decided to sell it to a friend cheaply because he wanted to start playing, on credit at the time and he took ages to pay, saw he'd sold it on ebay a few months later, w***er.

8. Well I'm just curious as to what the first song people on here could play on bass was.
For me, on the £70 stagg crapmaster, American idiot. Oh dear lord, how far I have come since then. Started off not knowing what frets were what and it took me a while to get the concept of adjusting a strap...
How about you guys?

9. Oh don't get me wrong, this bass is a can of worms. Neck pickup is on it's last legs, most of the hardware at least a little rusty, the wiring isn't original fender as far as I can tell, needs a new jack socket etc. Clearly the previous owner didn't care for it a great deal (surprising as I bought it off a member here many moons ago). Only when I stopped to look at it have I realised the extent of it.

I'm just happy to be playing again truth be told, it's no big thing, I was planning on new pickups anyway and it's nothing a few screws and a bit of metal polish won't fix up.

10. Flateric, I would be very grateful if you did and of course I'd be able to put a few quid your way, cheers bud :)

No idea how it would have happened, it bridge itself is a little rusty in places so possibly the previous owner stripped the heads trying to adjust siezed/ rusted screws. I've managed to get them out with a set of pliers but this is impossible to do under tension so setting it up isn't practical using pliers.

11. I don't really care if I soak my bass in sweat, it gets a full clean after every gig anyway and it's inevitable.

However driclor is amazing stuff.
I use it on my back, pits and a few other bits to combat the insane sweating if it's even mildly humid.
Be warned, this stuff HURTS when you first start using it, I'd describe it like an itchy burn, like a really bad stinging nettles sting. It smells like vodka though which makes me happy.

12. I know this aint what you want to hear as a recommendation but tell him to get some decent musicians headphones before investing in an in ear monitoring system, the marked reduction in volume helps with clarity, and the added bonus of not going deaf.

13. Well in the god knows how many years I've played this bass I've never properly set it up, it was kind of an ok setup when I got it.
Today I finally got the right allen keys for the job and went at it, only to discover the previous owner had stripped the heads of the first 3 height adjustment screws.

Now, any ideas good BC'ers where I can buy some spares?

Get drunk, calm down, and then go on ebay to buy stuff whilst drunk.
