1. Get a lined up copy from the drummer or guitarist and place in your project > line up your guitar drum tracks > drop a marker exactly where the vocal comes in > line up your copy of the vocal to the marker > delete lined up copy from project...

My standard solution to these things is to undo , undo , undo until I find the prompt that tells me what I did .......

    (..... undo invert time/space continuum ) etc

    Again

That's heading in the right direction, sounds like the take has been inadvertantly reversed somehow..... check the PT equivalent of 'undo history' - the offender will likely be there.

@ Lurks, In Reaper you'll find it to the right of help on the top toolbar (your last action in brackets)

I called on the skills of my dear old dad to put the electrics back together. He's an artist with a soldering iron and did a superb job of it - even using vintage solder! ;)
Good old dad! Old lead solder works really well - although the fumes are best not inhaled...

The loose earth wire got fixed (which had been causing all kinds of hum previously). We found that the neck pickup is well and truly kaput, but that the middle and bridge p'ups are in fine working order. That'll do me just fine.
The neck pickup on a strat is one of the most useable imho - certainly the warmest, missing out one of the best 'strat' tones without it.... looking at the guitar, I'd be tempted to pop some shiny chrome lipsticks in there...

So here's what the finished job looks like:

I'm very happy with it - definitely a keeper.

All I need to do now is learn how to play it!

root, fifth and octave played together will give you a power chord - overdrive it for instant attitude... get to know the pentatonic scale positions for soloing and checkout someone like Justin... http://www.justinguitar.com/

  4. Lay your hands on a cheapie 12ax7 out of a behringer pedal or similar, and try that.... I'm sure you'd hear a big difference. The Boogie tubes are very much better - I used a full set in my little Traynor Bassmate to add a bit of break up for guitar use.

The Mullards that were in it would stay clean all the way up until flat out - and to be honest I found them too polite and treble shy for guitar.

I run a valve LDC mic for vocal recording which has just been upgraded with a Sylvania 12ax7 from the for sale section here (thanks again Gareth), and you really tell the difference between tubes with this.

The stock tube was nice but a just a little brittle and 2 dimensional.

A new Electro Harmonix was fuller but less refined.

A 70's Mullard had nice depth and complexity - but imho was too bassy/warm with a soft treble (that vintage British sound)

The Sylvania has a nice bold open sound with lovely depth and detail (American sounding).

I haven't tried a Boogie in there, but I'd bet it would be similar to the Electro Harmonix sonically....

I always find slot held strings a pain when you need to do an emergency re-string, as the string keeps popping out of the slot until you've got some semblance of tension.

I have been doing a bit of looking myself though I am not sure what benefit all the differences with a lot of the kit is . I have reaper and in amongst all the boutique looking free stuff I keep seeing reco's for the Cockos stuff I already have
The Reaper plugs are designed for clean, artifact free work - for initial mixing, correction etc... if you add the EQ I mentioned above (after ReaEQ has sorted out all the unwanted stuff) you can add sparkle, grit, warmth, fairy dust and all sorts of sonic loveliness.... same goes for compressors ,limiters etc.

'clean' and 'character' plugs have their own place in a mix imho.

  7. I've just been trying a new EQ - and was so impressed with the way it worked on vocals and guitars, that I thought I'd come here to link/share...

  8. Peavey windsor Studio 15

Great recorded tone from the balanced out (not so good from the speaker itself) - comes with its own attenuator and the ability to run any octal power valve you wish without rebiasing. Ideal valve recording amp that got utterly slayed review wise on release. You should be able to grab one at low cost...

Thanks guys! Does that mean I could use the inbuilt USB in the Q3 instead, and somehow prevent it opening the bundled Handyshare software?
You can with an H2 - but USB interface/mic is not a feature of theQ3,unfortunately.....

  10.
we have the keyboard recognised and configured by reaper , all I have to do now is work out what to do with the thing ,
make sure your vst folder has piano/synth/drum/whatevervsti'syoufancy ready for action - now time for the cool time saver....

right click on the track window and choose 'insert virtual instrument on new track' - this should configure your chosen vsti to work within reaper.

You may have to arm the track to record and turn monitoring on ,but now you should hear your virtual instrument playing back at you....
