  1. These strings were bought as singles to achieve a good balanced tension set. Cost about £28. I have decided that I prefer flats after all so am going back to those.

    The gauges are: 40 55 75 100 135

They have been on my bass for about 3 weeks and have been 'noodled' on only. They were on a 34" scale bass with a 3 over 2 tuning peg arrangement. I tend not to trim too short and like to have 3 or 4 turns around the tuners so they should be fine for most basses.

If you'd like me to measure the length of the strings please just ask.

  2. I'm considering a few options for a passive J style bass one of which is the EMG BQC control. This has a stacked Bass/Treble and stacked mid control pots leaving me one spare hole for volume and pickup blend

For such a volume/blend stack what is a suitable pot (does one bit need to be logarythmic and the other linear - values etc.?) and how should it be wired up?

    All help welcome!

  3. There was a 5er on evil bay just recently http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item2ec085674b&item=200798463819&nma=true&pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&rt=nc&si=54g%252FOS%252B2CBpi4yeoxQ6bgzGVd1U%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Hope that helps. I was in contact with the guy and although the listing is finished he was happy to deal off line.

    ...
The scratches down the back of my SG came from shoving it into a gap behind my acoustic (doh, stap button), most of the dings on my instruments comes from standing up from my chair and knocking them against the table.
The bent tuner on my rickenbastard is from whacking the headstock against a shelf in the studio by mistake.
The bent pot on my fretless is from it dropping into the table leg as I reached across for a mandolin...

Does this mean we should be wary about buying basses from you :)

  5. I don't know if anyone else say this on evilbay recently, but the s/n looks like a 1999 MIJ bass which doesn't chime well with the ear posts. Here's some pics from the ebay listing.

Is this the real thing as it looks like it's in beautiful condition.

or maybe it's just that when they do loads of them don't fit on my bass! :P
While you're about it.... and people are reading, remind me what preamp you've got for sale? :D

  7. Following on from the P/MM post, Is it possible to rewire a bass with a Jazz p/up (neck position) and an MM p/up (bridge position) such that with a suitable 5-way rotary switch, and treating the bass as 3 single coil p/ups (is an MM the same as a humbucker in this respect?), can give you the following options:

    Bridge single coil
    Bridge Humbucker
    Middle single coil
    Mid/Neck Humbucker
    Neck single coil

Any thoughts, wiring diagrams, switch suggestions etc welcome!

  8. My personal favs are the TI JF344s but for half the price I think the Fender 9050 CLs are really good too.

I've not noticed any significant wear from flats yet (my longest serving f/l was in my possession for around 3 years strung with flats).
