1. I feel like someone should stick up for the OP a little bit here......

I'm guessing the design and prototyping of the Amp will be accompanied with a report/dissertation, half of the experience is finding the issues. This isn't a highly polished concept with sleek marketing and a huge R&D budget, this is someone trying to think outside the box (no pun intended), and do a project with some substance for university.

A bit of open mindedness would help from everyone, he isn't going to harm anyone! (insert back related joke) :)

In a way asking what software people use is the wrong question. The most important part of getting a good poster (or any other graphic design) is having a good idea and the talent to be able to realise it. While the right software can make some things easier, a decent graphic designer will be able to get excellent results with whatever they have to hand. The computer and the software on it are just another tool, just like the pen, paints, Letraset or airbrushes that came before it.

    This^

Suggesting photoshop/illustrator for someone who has no design experience is a bit crazy, as red said its a tool. A better use of money would be to get a designer to do it. Or use free software to get by if you don't want to spend any money. The templates idea is good for beginners.

  3. You could look at an option to dim the lights? My trace (newer one) had a knob to control the brightness of the mood lights. I know there was an above suggestion to change the plexi colour, I'd be inclined to say go all or nothing with the idea.

Its good to challenge peoples perceptions of what an amp should look like, its what keeps product interesting. The reality is this isn't going to be aimed at the masses, but the chances are if musicians will buy transparent guitars, drum kits and pianos; this has a chance of developing into something cool.

I'd also echo others sentiments of keeping the range tight, too much choice is often as big of a problem as not enough.

My Sennheiser Momentum over-ears are stunning in my opinion. They are significantly more expensive than those above but worth it in my opinion. Use them daily and they never disappoint. And they only sit at a couple of 100's rather than several. :P

I have the on ear version that comes in at about £120, best cans I've owned. Plan on getting the Over ears at some point!

+1 for the price pointed akg's as well.

If those exquisite Jazz-sounding fills on the Ronson/Mars track are programmed and not bass guitar, I will eat my kennel.

Yup I'll give you a hand with it.

There might be some other stuff going on, but there is 100% real life actual human played by hand bass in there as well.

No, I know my own mind. Would people stop trying to tell me how to think?
Not disputing that, I was talking about the influences that you might not always see. Hence using the word subconscious.

I don't want to get in a slugging match, you clearly have your opinion on the subject. Thats cool.

Sweeping generalisation. I speak for myself, and you can't do it for me. I have no interest in album covers. I look, sure, but it has zero influence on my opinion of the music. Videos are entertaining, arguably important, but I'm not talking about album art or videos in my response to the OP. I'm talking about appearance - personal appearance. Image. Clothing. Music does intersect with art, yes, but image does not influence my interest in a band or my enjoyment of their music. It is not important to me. That's what I'm saying.
I think you might be underestimating your subconscious.

No, of course you don't. Thats why records don't have any artwork on them and why nobody has ever made a music video. ;)

Every single major musical movement of the last 60-odd years has had an image. Music intersects with art, fashion, photography and becomes part of something wider, it does not and it will not exist in isolation. The people who think "image isn't important" when it comes to making music are quite frankly kidding themselves on.

    Nailed it!

The band I am in takes a lot of time and money on appearance and image. Some might say its trying too hard, dare say those people dress pretty badly. Fashion is important, you will be judged on what you are wearing.

Marketing is the devil's work, hence all these supposedly pretty teenagers in their skimpy clothing, hiding behind autotune while performing songs they didn't write.
Thats a little general I feel. Marketing fundamentally is just the same as it was 50 years ago. Obviously technology and media have changed, but the psychology is still the same.

  9. be wary would be my advice, especially before parting with any cash.

In terms of finding companies, maybe look at bands you like and check their management companies out. Showing a bit of willing can go a long way.

We were managed by a pretty high profile company for a few years; we sent them a demo, they came to see us play and hey presto. No money changed hands, just an agreement of a cut if we were to get signed.

Another lesson learnt would be to look at what you need; is it marketing help, help to get gigs or support slots, help to get recordings done etc. Different managers have different skill sets.

You touched on it in your original post that you need someone who believes in you, that is absolutely essential!

  10. Clothes are a divisive subject I think. A lot of people profess not to care about appearance and clothing, but IME they tend to be the most stubborn.

Without being too controversial; I rarely see an unsigned band and think they are "fashionable" or "trendy". My thoughts obviously!

  11. Firstly, Its a great idea that will suit a lot of the market. Ticks a lot of boxes for most people.

Some good ideas and some bits they clearly haven't considered at all.
I'm inclined to disagree here, they have clearly tried to cater for the majority. To modify the design for the more asymmetric body shapes would have altered it too much. I don't think its a lack of R&D, quite the opposite.

If you are 6 feet 4 with a 28 inch waist you are going to struggle to walk into a high street shop and buy trousers. (Yes Red, I know you dont buy your clothes off the highstreet :) )

Just to show two sides to any idea, I love my Min-Etune. Works excellently and is bullet proof so far.

Have to admit I've heard good things from a couple of people who have them, agree that the voiding warranty thing seems harsh though.

  13. I think we could have a personal taste sub forum, this could go in there along with....

    Jazz vs Precision
    Ampeg vs Ashdown
    Pick vs Fingers
    Originals vs Covers

    Did I miss anything...

Jokes aside it's threads like this that got me to take the plunge on flats, and I'm glad I did.
