once again my Kilo has died & let me down at a gig
i bought it from GAK in May,it did 2 gigs then died mid set on it's 3rd (only 3 weeks old),sent back for repair having a new main board fitted.
fast forward to yesterday,we set up at Leeds Harley Davidson,i switched my amp on,heard the usual click as the protection circuit does its thing,cancelled the mute button -- silence.
it was receiving a signal as the clip light was working but nothing was getting to the speaker cab so i guess the power amp is goosed.
i tried changing all leads etc' all to no avail,once again my Hartke Kilo let me down at an important gig,i'm not a happy bunny,this is the most unreliable amp' i have ever owned.

so i'll be phoning GAK at lunch time to arrange another return,luckily i kept the box as i haven't trusted it since it's first failure.
what i would like them to do is either send me a Hartke LH1000 & credit me the difference
or send me something else,i need lots of power for my double bass any suggestions ?
i was thinking along the lines of a Gallien Krueger RB1001 ?

I used Rotosound RS4000's for about a year & found them pretty good for slap/pizz.
The D & G were excellent & the most gut like synthetic string I have ever tried,very nice to play too.
Where as the E & A were a lot higher tension & had a quite different tonal character with a pretty harsh slap tone,I swapped them for a pair of innovation super silvers I had laying around,this made a pretty good set.
Currently I'm using innovation gold slaps E & A with plain gut D & G.

So the Roto's are pretty good but rather unbalanced as a set IMO

plain gut D & G

these strings have had quite a bit of use but have plenty of life left in them.
the plain guts have frayed a little where they wrap around the tuner but are perfectly fine,they have been oiled very regularly so are nice & pliable.
check this youtube clip we recorded a couple of months ago to hear these strings in action.

this beautiful hand made Overwater bass is just sitting unused as i play exclusively upright bass in my rockabilly band & it seams silly to take such a lovely instrument to each gig just as an emergency backup.
i bought this bass from GBBL about 4 months ago & since then it's only been played in the house,even then only a handful of times,so i may as well move it on to someone who will actually use it.
build quality is absolutely top class,as are all Overwater bases,with perfect fit & finish.
sound wise,in passive mode it is classic 60's Jazz bass,switching in the active eq gives a very good range of sound adjustment all of which is usable,even with the bass fully cranked there is no boom here,just a lovely rich warm goodness.
it really is a beautiful bass which ideally i would like to keep but as i need to raise some extra cash toward my first classic car purchase a cash sale would be good for me.

These low tension flat wound steel strings are in good condition,the D & G were only on my bass a few days during my ill fated foray with magnetic pickups so are like new.
the E & A have been on for about 4 months but are in good condition with loads of life left in them.
They sound very good pizz & slap very well for steels,can't comment on Arco as I don't do that at all.

Hi Rabbie,thanks for your reply,I already have pretty big grooves which are far too big for the 2 steel strings so I do get a little bit of a rattle,is a plain E bigger than one of Thomas's Twisters.
I think I will go with a plain gut A string what would you recommend for a suitable E ?

I'm currently using plain gut D & G with low tension steel E & A strings (Blast Cult Tone Mongers)
While these sound very good I do prefer the guts over the steels & can't stop the craving for a full plain gut set,however an E & A will cost me £150 OR so from Thomann & while I'm sure I will love the A I am a little concerned I may find a plain gut E to be floppy or hard to get a decent sound from.
the gut-a-likes that came on my bass had a hopeless floppy E string.
anyone use a plain gut E string ?
Should I buy a wrapped E ?

Btw I play rockabilly slap or country music so I just need a lovely warm old school thump.

Yes indeed they do,I find them much easier to play & live through my amp they are pretty punchy too,I highly recommend them.

They really are a fantastic instrument for sure & have a wonderful sound.

I ditched the gut-a-likes pretty fast as I didn't like them,these are blast cult tone mongers & I really like them.

Hope you get on with the Krivo ok,I bought one from Goluhur music which turned out to be faulty
I didn't like steel strings either.
But I love my Blast Cult channel blaster 2.
The preamp is built into the tail piece along with a low pass filter,mid control & slap pickup level control.
along with the tension screw for the bridge pickup I don't have any feedback problems so far.
it sounds great too.
