  1. Yamaha RBX4-A2 Aircraft Grey/White

First gen' Squier VMJ, they were all natural maple back when I were'a lad.

    Spector Q4, granite.

Westfield B1000, in pink and maple

Everything else comes and goes and I can imagine this peasants quartet flicking the V's as the new pretenders exit the building.

Luckily, my rabbit hole wasn't too deep when it came to spendy stuff, Stingray, US Fender, Aria SB etc didn't stay long....

.....more like those family relatives that stay at Christmas....great company at first, but I soon realise, I've heard it before and can't wait to see the back of them😉

Did I use the word complete. It would have needed some welding as all rot boxes built in those days did but it was there.

I don't suppose you think you could have picked up a Tiger 110 or BSA Goldstar or a 650 Roadrocket for about £100 either?

    But you could 🤣

In 1992, I bought a well running, short ticket, rough as a badgers backside on the body '78 MK2 RS2000 for £200 in glorious white...dynamically it was still as woeful as when it was new, felt like a tad quicker 1600E only not as comfy.

...although this post brings nothing to the bass party, it maybe helps your case😉

That's fair enough. Let's just say they have a tendency to make basses I personally am interested in quite heavy. The two I bought, I sold. The Enhanced and the PJs are reportedly heavy. Even the PB20 with a poplar body, can easily be heavy for what I read. I have good hopes for the poplar JB62. The one on sale in rhe classfields was 4.4kg if I remember correctly, which is ok for a Jazz in the great scheme of things, but it is not on the light side for a poplar body. This makes me suspect that, much for the JB75 I had, they use fairly thick slabs of wood. That being said, other people report lower weigh and I will likely end up ordering one at one point.

Yet the MB4 Snide'rays seem consistently ok weight wise.

But one mans heavy is another mans reassuringly substantial😉

  4. A most apt mnemonic....

I Dont Particularly Like Modes A Lot

Just been re-re-re-revisiting modes, but more for noodling over chords, not as scales, and found

myself rusty with the names again, having a short term memory like a gold fish isn't helping.

Maybe of use to someone learning too. 😎

I just got one last week, in shell pink.

Build quality etc bang on, nothing to complain about. Tuners do feel a bit cheap though less so than on my other HB (5string PJ). Set up pretty good as well, with low action out of the box. Intonation seems to be in need of some tweaking.

I only rehearsed with it once for about half an hour but I wasn't disappointed. Great, classic JB tones for very little money.

Just the merest lick of silicon grease makes them feel much smoother 😎

I’ve been watching this thread with interest, especially as I’m currently looking for a bass for a

friend of mine. He is a beginner, and asked me to help him find a bass. When he said how much

will he need to pay, I said probably around £100 which is what I thought it would cost to find him

a Squier Affinity or something similar. Been looking for a few days, and haven’t seen anything

half decent for less than £150 or more. It would seem that even the budget end of the market

has not been immune to a big hike.
(I’ll maybe take a look at Thomann for a Harley Benton or something, but would have preferred

to have a go on a bass before buying.)

I wouldn't p**s about on Marketplace for Squiers, which I like myself but, are now poor value for money TBH.

.....most sellers haven't a clue what they are selling or, very importantly how to store and maintain a bass....which means not in the shed, by a radiator etc and not adjusting a truss rod with an almost fitting IKEA allen key etc.

Just buy a base (bass😊) model Harley Benton and enjoy.

I work on quite a few guitars and have yet to have a Harley Benton runt pass thru my hands.

The HB fit, finish, playability and sounds are in truth all one really needs, the rest is, if we were honest, vanity stuff.

Yes, they may/will need a set up - but so does a Fender US Custom Shop - but that's it, no unwanted surprises and he gets the colour he wants with decent strings too, amazingly. 😎

  7. Not wishing to sound the horn of doom and gloom.....but I will😊I've found the market for bass guitars, strats, teles and amps to be fairly sticky and price sensitive at the moment, and with current jitters n worries can't see it changing for the foreseeable future.

This slow market trend is even more so at the romantic end of the market, by which means the old/vintage/classic, I've been moving my stuff on.

Same with the classic car market, behind the hype of a few hero cars (some of which didn't complete on sales) there's a lot of stock going to suction, and a lot of pills being swallowed. The bread n butter sector is interesting too but for other reasons, I'll leave it there on that.

I think the term for this is pushing the beat. I’m the opposite, my natural style is slightly behind the beat though when recording I try to push it as it gives a bit more urgency & snap to the track.

So was Bernard Edwards, but he didn't sound too shabby😉

  9. I've seen some very worn frets, so much so the profile looks like Nessie's back, and also on the same well used exact same model, minimal wear....some players really do have fingers like Mole Grips.

A well dressed fret, with good radius on the crown simply makes it easier and less tiring to play, and string bending is a breeze..

...but like anything, it will still perform with worn/flattended frets, why make it tougher though?

  10. These Yamaha RBX4-A2 A.I.R. Body are ridiculously light, the title weighs more😉 they do a 5 string too.

Whenever a bass player picks mine up you can see it almost launch into the air as the person picking it up, is poised to expect something far heavier.
