  1. I think the 'wood' question simply boils down to just how 'stiff' the nut to the bridge is.....which is why some wood combos can be perceived as darker, more flex between the two points, brighter being less.

PS Maple wins on looks though. 😉

Would love to hear your thoughts about guys showing up for auditions unprepared.

A few weeks ago I referred an opportunity to a friend. This was a legit opportunity with top notch guys with an agent and ready to go out make money and gig. This is not a start up band.

This was an opportunity for guys that want and need money from playing. Not for the

" I don't need the money I just want to play" guys.

It's an oldies act and they needed a bass player that could harmonize.

My friend was given 4 songs to audition and he shows up for the audition unprepared.

If it was a a start up or questionable opportunity I somewhat get why a guy would limit the effort put forth. This was

    " money in the bank"

You've all heard this question before. Why do guys do this? Me, if I commit to an audition I'll show up owning those 4 songs. If I don't own them I'll cancel the audition. Doesn't that make more sense than showing up not knowing the material?

Id go to Guitar Guitar in Glasgow and buy the G&L Tribute JB-2 thats down from 349 to 299. On the basis that I've yet to try a G&L Tribute, and everyone seems to rave about them, plus I'm a sucker for a deal.

Great to hear they are still going, I'm sure I bought three Westfield B1000 P basses from there, back in the day.

I think the guy in the clip is using 3 finger plucking. Which just takes good old fashioned practice...🙂

I think this is the only way to play this finger style. Others may disagree, but it's the only way I can do it. "Everybody Dance" is (a bit) easier - you could try starting with that?

Unfortunately, it'll never look as cool as chucking 😃

Many thanks for your help 😎

Spot on! If I email Spector,  will they tell me the date of manufacture?

I've been told, but I ain't sure, Eskimo...

There is no decoder to break out the year etc for Korean Spectors, love to be proved wrong though. 😎

You can roughly get an idea on the FB Spector group as they trying to get an idea for when a serial number v year was bought....from xxxx to xxxx probably x year etc.

Arrived this morning. Had an hour spent with it so here goes

    The good:

Love the colour, looks brilliant with the tort plate and matching headstock.

After a set up the bass plays great with no noisy electronics and I have zero complaints with the tones on offer.

No issues with the tuners either which appear solid enough.

    Lastly the weight is only

    9lbs 2oz/4.14 kg.

    The not so good:

Fret ends were a bit rough (sorted now)

    The bad:

Bass has been dropped in transit by the looks of it. Small chip on the end of the headstock which has taken a small piece of the paint off. At the other end the strap button has been pushed in past the paint and is bent slightly. Bass doesn't appear to have suffered any other damage. Not quite sure what to do now as the small cosmetic issues at both end of the bass don't bother me that much but they shouldn't be there.

Wow that's some transit damage...its put a flat on the headstock and, for a strap fitting to break thru the paint and still have enough oomph to dent the body....

I'd be backing that, not worth any discount. 😎

  7. Tried one a while back, sunburst, maple neck, liked it, beautiful looker too. 434M

Usual Yamaha offering, flawless build, fit 'n finish, neck especially nice, a proper quality product. BB (Broad Bass) always were and still are a classy product line.

I liked the tone, only played thru an Ashdown combo, nothing more though, but it was enough.

Disclaimer I like Yamahas, owned many, never had a bad one, ohh and my avatar is an RBX4-A2.😉

  8. The problem is you need another jazz, one on rounds, one on flats, sorted😉

It's easy to forget up to the late 70s, early 80s most new basses came running flats out of the box....be they Fender, Musicman et al.

I now run Harley Benton flats (ex Fender and EB fanboy), a set on a 50s style single coil P another on a jazz, the HB flats have a lovely feel being super smooth (great slides) nice tension, hold tune and to me are fairly bright for flats so best of both worlds....but I do tend to play near the bridge.

...£13 really no need to spend more😎

  9. Not wishing to generalise..

    ...which always means I will😉

I find in my 'sphere of influence' those on bass tend to be the more cerebal, thoughtful, organised type, which I see as pros. More practical engineering wise too.

Con wise, the bassisti tend to be more 'anoraky' about their gear and always chasing 'the tone'.

They usually own more examples of their 'stock in trade', more amps, flit between strings makes and types, proper gear sluts....guitarerers seem more satisfied with their gear, or maybe not so bothered.

Strat or Tele, 9s, 10s or 11s, and either love or hate Micheal Schenker.

That said, guitar playing mate of mine has 14 guitars and an ex automotive Research and Development engineer, can take or leave Michael Schenker, so what do I know🤔😉

Most bass amps used in garages are because that's the biggest space available for rehearsing with drums and whatnot.

The clue is in the post😉
