    http://shotcut.org/

Does multiple audio tracks which gives you lots of options for how to record things. I've used it a few times for simple editing and it probably takes a bit of time to learn how it works, but it looks like it's very good once you learn it. There are tutorial videos on the site.

Review here: https://www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/shotcut , summary says "A remarkable free video editor that makes even advanced editing straightforward, Shotcut is a brilliant tool for novice videographers."

+1 for Shotcut here. I used to put together videos for work using Adobe Premiere but all my old licensed software will not run on modern computers so was looking for a decent replacement without having to spend a lot.

It has its foibles but it's easy to use and capable.

You could also look at https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ - that was my preference for both capabilities and the way it works but the install wrecked my Cubase DAW installation and all my Arturia VSTs to the extent that I had to completely rebuild my computer so I haven't had the courage to look at it again.

I had a different solution, I’d cut the G marginally too short - it reached the hole, and went part way round the capstan, but kept slipping under tension.

So I held it in place in the hole with a small self-tapping screw, which held it enough to bring it up to tune.

It’s on my 'only use at home’ bass (well of course they all are at the moment!!), but it’s been on and in tune for several months now.

    But all disclaimers apply......

So if it does let go, you'll have a small screw as well as a flailing string shooting out... just saying.

    Stay safe.

  3. Well I didn’t spot this thread when it first originated but if I had, I would have told you that the knotted string I have on my old Ibanez 8 string has been on there for at least 14 years- now about 20!

In fairness I hardly play it from one decade to the next and the strings are as dead as dodos now but I don’t think there’s a worry about the longevity of the knot. 😀

  4. I suppose it depends on how you feel about that level of spend.

I’m delighted with the big sky albeit I bought it to use with Chapman Stick rather than bass. Every band I play stick in commented on the sound and I’ve had audience members coming up to chat about it as well.
I have literally only scratched the surface of what it can do but I won’t be selling it anytime soon if ever.

I had started out thinking I would get a Boss RV 5 because I liked that modulated reverb feedback that it does but the big sky takes it to a whole different level.

I bought mine on eBay- absolutely as new condition, boxed etc. and I think I paid about £280 so you could save yourself a bit of cash that way too.

    ConnectionOpen works well.

There is a charge, but divided up between the musicians involved, it's quite reasonable.

A DAW will be involved, but any free or LE versions will work.

So you have actually used it, @lowdown? Any discernible latency while playing and what type of internet connections were being used?

  6. Two bands of full parametric eq would allow you to realise virtually any sound your bass was capable of but remember that that would entail six controls (Boost/cut, centre frequency and Q width for each band) and could be even more complex if you included Q shape.

I'm a fan but I don't think I'd want it actually on my bass - definitely outboard but mainly for recording.

For live, to my mind a better compromise would be a good filter preamp or even just a semi parametric mid range control - much easier to manage in a hurry.

That said, I love the Stingray 2 eq style circuit for a bass that has a pickup at or near the bridge position and most gigs I just play with my bass tone control(s) fully open. I have enough other stuff to worry about.

If you want an over the top, fabulous tune, with a snazzy arrangement, performed in a glitzy showbiz fashion, just call.........

    Will Lee...

Literally LOLing here at the end! Love serious artists who don't feel the need to take themselves seriously!

True legendary bass and something to hold on to. If you don’t mind me asking, how did it come to be in your possession?

He literally explains that about 13 posts back up the thread- whoops just saw that Kiwi had already replied to this- was tutting to myself about people not reading the thread and here I am myself- guilty as charged!

Any pictures?  I'm always curious about serial numbers.  Mine has to be the graphite necked sister of Greg Lakes 8 string monster used on Fanfare for the Common Man - only about 8 serials separating the two.

Unfortunately, no. The shop I worked in for a while back then had two in stock - the last two of a consignment of Alembic instruments which had been brought in a couple of years earlier - needless to say, I got quite familiar with them!

One was sold to Wet Wet Wet- I don't know if it was personally owned by bassist Graeme Clark or if he may even still have it. The other was traded with a shop in England ( maybe Dixie's Music - can't remember) where it was hung from the machines in a shop window display. The fishing line suspending it broke overnight and the bass came down on its point onto concrete and was found in the morning in three pieces, both body wings having split from the neck with the force of the impact.

  10. Played one of these quite a bit in the early 80s- beautiful Modulus Graphite neck and definitely sharper sounding than the wood necked equivalents. That’s a lovely thing.

I don't think it's worth the grief. If people can get apoplectic about Yorkshire tea, I can't imagine what would happen. I don't mind being a closet musical fascist, but I'm not putting my head above the parapet. The internet would probably implode.

Oh go on- pm it to me and I can “leak” It quoting a “trusted source” 😂

  12. Awesome stuff but then again Dundee is well known to have the funk.

Seriously, difficult to do and you have pulled it off. Kudos to the studio guy as well, the recording sounds brilliant. Noticed the autotune more on your sister's vocals to be honest - I'm with the consensus here- you should ditch that or at least knock it back a bit.

Let us know if there's a Glasgow/ Edinburgh gig - I'll be there!

Seriously, though, that is another part of the problem. We can all bust are asses getting more and more chops but hwo many if us can find a Joe Zawinul or a Michel Camilo, a Michael Brecker or a John Scofiled to bounce off?

I think you’re just a bit fed up at the moment, Bilbo.

You're right- moving in the circles most of us do on here, it’s hard to find a sustained situation where you have hugely inspirational players to bounce off but over the period, I’ve found that sometimes the folks I’ve played with have been inspired and influenced by my playing and I enjoy that role immensely.
Maybe you could be (or unbeknown are) a great positive influence on those around you. I reckon that would be worth bothering about.
