1. a true gentleman and scholar - all queries answered, business transacted smoothly and package received quickly and safely. I would buy everything I need of Gaf if only he sold beer and meat. Trade in total confidence. Rich

  2.
I prefer the Stingray in that respect, with a single pickup. But I do a fair bit of slap on the Corvette $$ and I don't find it the second pickup gets in the way. The slap tones you can get out of that bass are amazing.

You are right, you should try it yourself to be sure that the way *you* do it works on that bass, but I have no problems. And it sounds HUGE, whether fingerstyle or slap or whatever. Just look at it, don't touch it... can't you hear it??? :)

    Fantastic bass.

    Me & desert island:
    1) Stingray
    2) Jazz bass
    3) Warwick Corvette $$
    (maybe a 5-string version of 2 or 3).
+1

What works for me might not work for you. I have a $$5, which I LOVE, finger style or slap. I thumb just over the start of the fingerboard, which leaves an inch or two before the big $$s get in the way. If you thumb further back you could have issues. Great, great bass though.

  3.
Don't be worried Richard, it's just a simple product that works.
I was a bit sceptical but the proof's in the pudding.

All I will say is it gets an incredible amount of dirt off the frets and 'board which smear around and all over the place until you buff it off as directed so don't be disheartened half way through!

As Gaf said - Give it some elbow grease!

    Cheers,
    Jon
cheers, elbow grease doesn't appeal so I will need to convince my kids that rubbing down the frets and fretboard of my basses is fun, or at least if they do it they'll get an ice cream. Obviously they'll need to get down from up the chimney first.

  4.
Hooray! Good times, it really is fab the fender custom shop use it now. No faffing around either, I'm out though i need some more! And JJ is a really lovely bloke, scared me a bit when he grabbed my bass and started rubbing the frets all those years back but immglad he did!!
I am getting too old and lazy for the whole masking tape and brasso, lemon oil sh*t. My Warwick in particular gets a bit roughed up. So I took your advice and got a 3-4-2 deal from JJ. Not arrived yet. Always worried that anything that sounds too good to be true is too good to be true.

  5. i am relatively new to this site and it took me a while but it's now very clear to me that a bass for sale even for sale a few times in quick succession does not say anything much about the quality of the bass. some brilliant basses are moved on continually it seems as their owners are on an endless GAS induced search for perfection or are skint. This bass for example looks like a beaut.

  6. I've got the Tascam MP3 trainer. I like it a lot - simple, fun, useful. However, it is brittle with the buttons being the weak point, and the Tascam post-care is not great so either it's got to be treated like it's made of glass or expect to have to replace it sooner than you'd hope.

  7.
How did the Marcus assembly go?
[off topic] sweet!!! I absolutely love it - didn't need much of any work to get to how I like it. John East has set me up with a Marcus Retro - TBH not sure I need it these days given my pro recording days are long gone but still prefer as much control as poss and JE's pre's are the very best. THinking about moving on my old SWR workingman to get someway toward a Promethean.

  8. Looks really really nice. i am looking forward to any further reviewing you do of this.

My three kids have had various bits of themselves stuck in various bits of my gear. I quite like the process of watching them get used to some new bit of gear, with its new nooks and crannies.

  9.
Depends on your definition of "Jazz" I guess - it's a very broad genre.

I cannot stand/understand the Free/Hard side of jazz (Ornette Coleman, Charlie Parker etc.), & the Smooth/Dinner end of things (Stan Getz etc) bores me to tears.

What I do go for, however, is some of the middle ground. Take a punt at Cannonball Adderley, early Miles Davis (Kind of Blue etc), Jimmy Smith, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington & so forth. Some of the Scandinavian stuff is worth a go too - Nils Petter Molvaer & the awesomely named Nils Henning Oersted Pedersen (usually abbreviated to NHOP). Very few of these would qualify as "Jazz Club" contenders. :)

If Funk is an essential component, Maceo Parker is right up there. 1/3 of the JB Horns (the other two are Fred Wesley & Pee-Wee Ellis).

If your local library is any good, dip into their CD racks - it's a good cheap way of finding new things to listen to.

    Pete.
Apart from not really knowing about the Scandanavian references, I think this is really good advice. The middle ground in jazz as described above is full of some geniuses and masterpieces. Check them out.

  10.
Very easy to deal with and pleasent throughout, i sold him a marcus jazz bass and he was very accomdating and polite
    Gaf
cheers boss!

  11. bought a collection only bass off Gaf - took a request to ship in his stride, no fuss. Good communication, easy transaction. Bass delivered safely (bubble wrap-a-go-go), when promised. 100% reliable. Trade with confidence.

    Cheers, Rich

  12. thanks for the interest everyone. Two updates: NEW PRICE £150. Also, generally no trades, looking for cash really to help pay off new bass purchase. However, have very specific trade options: either Fulltone Mosfet Bassdrive or Source Audio Multiwave distortion standard or pro (bit of cash to me for fulltone or MV standard). Doubt any takers but just to be as clear as possible. :)

  13. there are lots of different senses of "snob". One sense is when someone spends their time criticising others based on their own sense of taste in particular for things that cost a lot or have a good reputation. Such people are often awful but not always - my guitarist mate only plays ££££ vintage archtop guitars and only plays standards, refuses to play anything else, he doesn't get preachy about it though. There is another sense which is less focused on others and more on oneself - someone who cares about how they sounds, prefers better (not always more expensive) equipment, maintains their equipment, likes to stay in tune etc. I am in this camp - whatever I buy/own I prefer to be of good to excellent quality, but wouldn't think of criticising someone with a £20 bass. Most people are on the spectrum somewhere.
