1.
No one is bashing Mark nor suggesting he is a fraudulent seller the comments are no different to commenting on customer service by other shops or manufacturers (see the Ampeg oh dear thread).
dont really agree mate. Let's be clear if this isn't resolved and even more so, a pattern emerges then I will be first in line looking to name and shame BUT this has not concluded, it is only one sale and whatever you say I am afraid we have 4 pages of comment that may well have suggested to some that Bass Direct are not always a reliable vendor. However, if people are getting something from this I'll leave people to it.

  2.
I feel that this will, without doubt, damage Mark's reputation whatever the outcome. This should have been settled before becoming public. I hope we all get to see this sorted out quickly.
totally agree, this should be ended now. I have never bought a thing from Bass Direct and in fact I would have no hesitation is doing so (partly because it didn't take this for me to be hyper cautious in big purchases). However, one disagreement does not make a business a bad one.

  3.
Although obviously the legalities are important (it shouldn't even come to that stage on a community forum like this IMO), the moral implications are strong too.

Mark has a very good reputation on this forum, a lot of people that wouldn't buy vintage instruments because of this kind of thing may be (possibly past tense if this doesn't get resolved) more inclined to from him because of his reputation. There's no denying that this forum will be bringing him a lot of sales, both because of his reputation and general publicity (people will often talk about it in various threads suggestion others go see what he has in).

Mark's always come across as a very knowledgable guy about basses and very happy to help, in a situation like this, he stands to lose up to a couple of hundred pounds by admitting a mistake and taking the hit, or potentially losing out on hundreds of sales (without even looking at the legal side, where he may be forced to pay up as well as losing the other sales). People shouldn't have to double check everything they're told in shops by anyone, it's never a bad idea because anyone can make mistakes (I honestly doubt that Mark deliberately mis-sold the bass) but what happens after is every bit as what happens before the sale if there's a problem.

If the person that sold the bass to Mark is "a good customer", as Mark said, surely Mark can go back to him and try and work something out at that end too, so he might not even lose as much as he thinks.

Personally, I think Truckstop has potentially (depending on how it works out) had a lucky escape. A LOT of people (me included) never take necks off their basses, if I'd have bought a "vintage" instrument that turned out fake, I'd probably never have known. If I was buying from someone like Mark, I'd have taken his word as fact as he has a good reputation that I don't expect him to take advantage of.

Not pointing fingers, just saying that from a moral standpoint, Mark has a lot to lose. From a business view, he could potentially lose out on a lot of sales if he's deemed untrustworthy by the community (a few people have already said on this thread that they won't be buying from him, so potentially he's already losing sales). Legally, I can't say as I'm not informed, but from what others have said, so long as Truckstop's not had the bass too long, it looks like it'd go in his favour anyway as the bass is clearly not as described.
all good points. However I am not sure why this is playing out in public. What many people say is a reliable business and individual are taking a battering here without all the facts out there, and quite frankly it's not our business (when tied to an actual single sale, rather than evidence of regular misselling or fraud).

  4.
The cost of the raw neodymium in our drivers has gone from about £5 to £50 per woofer, in the last year.
wow - i think for just so many things we are going to look back at recent days and say "we never had it so good", when our kids are paying £100K to go to Uni and we are paying £2k for a barely decent 4x10.

  5.
Having read this month's BGM 's Bass Scholarship with Jon Clements, I had a look at his YouTube channel. Some great stuff by him and interesting footage, too.

    http://www.youtube.com/casime
your link should be casimer not casime Casimer

"Casimer" was a Marlowe DK guest tutor. He was cool with his Warwick Corvette and some great riffs. Took me a while to realise he was the same guy now appearing in the BGM column (which TBH I tend to skip through). Getting used to him with his endorsement Stingray.

  6. I too am trading in everything even medium weight for light and super light. However this would be a dream rig for me. I have played through a glock rig twice and each time LOVED it, so much presence. best of luck with this trade (I'd go for TecAmp 500 or 1000 if you can BTW).

  7.
I've never tried the Briefcase or Suitcase (much as I'd like to) but I doubt they'd suit the music I play too well, given that the Orange Terror Bass through a Barefaced cab sounds perfect to my ears.

I've heard they're love-it-or-hate-it rigs; either they really work for you or they really don't. Try before you buy.

On the other hand, my pjb Bass Buddy is my single most used and most useful piece of kit - just not on stage.

If I was playing in, say, a funk band or maybe a prog band, I'd be very tempted to run the Bass Buddy straight into a power amp.

As an indicator of how highly I rate it, I just bought a second one. :)
i also love my bass buddy, perfect for recording with its subtle compression, powerful EQ control. I also use it's 10 watt power (through my midget!) to give me a cool wee practice amp.

  8. this is a really fundamental point that does connect to the whole "profiteering" thing often debated. I like the fact that BC has a community feel but it is more or less that for people, and there are clearly lots of people not at all connected about the spirit of the site. So the question for me is whether we "set the bar low" or "high" in relation to what's accepted practice. It's pretty standard to set it low and it's nice occasionally to find a site willing it set it a bit higher. So if this is really a community then lending stuff, advice, support, etc., all vital. I tend to be of the camp less convinced about the supposed for sale rules whether that's "never make a profit" or "keep all info always". I suspect that suits guys who do a lot of dealing and happens to suit them in keeping the price low and ensuring they have the info to keep the price low. However, isn't it in everyone's interest to keep the price low? We are in the classic dilemma here. I think there is a genuine group of guys who like to have ready access to cheap(er) basses and like to make their basses available cheap(er) (assuming they are consistent). THis is fine as long as community is about more than that, which I very much hope and assume it is.

  9. I have not been able to stop humming and whistlin that Rubber Jonny track out since you posted it. It's got one of those timeless melodies you just cant get out of your head.
This is kinda 'Angular'

    This is kinda 'Glitch'

But neither of them are really angular or glitch, I just like the tunes.

But I was only doin my job guv, honest!!
point is my friend, it is one hell of a good job! Best wishes, one of your very satisfied customers, Rich

  11.
Yeah, I get halfway through a song and I'm gagging for hydration. Basically, I push one of the pedals on the Behringer FCB and it sends a note-on message to the microkorg; this means I can play synth bass with my feet whilst playing guitar with my hands. It allows my angular/glitch band to sound a lot fuller and more complicated than a 3-piece without adding more players.

    Dan
You youngsters with your new fangled ideas! No idea what an angular/glitch band is either. You are making me feel like a dinosaur.

  12.
Nice!

Does he make a pedal version?!
yes - if you look on John's website you will see a STMP-01, which is the J retro in a box! I dont think it gets talked about enough when all this chat about Sadowsky etc outboards is going on. I haven't heard anyone talk about it (review it).

  13. The OBT is a dark horse for me in my search for a new amp. I have tried one a couple of times and do like it. I tend to generate variation in my tone using pedals and like my amp to be a clean and tight as possible. I have been concentrating on Markbass, GK and Genz options but I added the OBT to my list along with the Streamliner and Tonehammer because I have been using my DHA OD more and more as a constant factor and am now wondering whether I should use the amp to generate this. I hesitate because I still like to have plenty clean, tight power on tap on my amp, and also my recordning set up doesn't allow me to mike up my amp + cab so i will still need to generate my sound using pedals and amp sim. But an OBT through my Barefaced midget t and compact!!! That would sound f***** huge. Decision, decisions.

  14.
Im all about the active sounds from all basses I cant see me ever using a passive bass, As soon as clip 4 started I felt "at home".
I never really thought this until a few months back when I realised I hadn't owned a fully passive bass since I was 17!! My 75 precision has had EMGs since I got it. My $$5 is active and I rarely use the passive option. I fitted a East Retro on my Marcus I bought off Gaf on here - although already active, the East brought it totally to life and gives it enormous presence - I have done some a/b recordings to show my old school mate who insists passive is best esp on a Fender and even when balanced the active just cuts through so much better (you can find the sweet spot easier). I do occasionally switch it to passive but usually I am left wondering why would anyone want a bass to sound like that!! (Please take this as a purely personal statement of taste - if you dig passive then fabulous, it's every bit as great) If I can juggle finances then it will be a 4 knob U retro on my $$5 and a P retro on my Precision. Fitting an East is a great investment.

  15.
Had a fun day with this today. I've programmed the FCB to output Note-On messages, triggering the MicroKorg and using the expression pedals to manipulate the sound whilst playing guitar into the M13 with my hands.

    Like Geddy Lee but 'sick'.
I've read that 4 times now and still dont know what it means but it sounds cool. I sometimes sneak a couple of mouthfuls of my pint during slow bits on our songs, I've often thought that's not far off Geddy's multi tasking.

  16. :) If Dave's got what you need make sure you come back and tell us about it. UNless it's brilliant then dont cause I will get put out my misery if I try to buy another thing. :)
I just looked on multi map and found that DHA are about a 90 minuite drive from my house :D

    ya learn something new every day . . . . . . . what a plomker
17. I haven't tried any of DAve's rack gear but do have a few of his pedals on my board including the VT2 valve OD. I love his stuff, the sound, the look, the whole thing, although understand it's not to everyone's taste. Given everything I have heard about the VT3 including the review on here (assume you've checked out?) I would say it is essential to try it. Dave's based in Devon; you are in Devon. SUrely you dont need anyone other than Dave to let you try a VT3 (assuming he has one)?
