1. wow, great it turned out OK. I benefit the whole time from cowboy couriers delivering to any number of neighbours on my street without the required explicit agreement to do so. I wouldn't want a £1200 bass left with them but it's pretty convenient when it comes to the usual strings, pedals etc. I need to think twice about this practice. Enjoy your beautiful bass.

  2. for some reason each page of Basschat is repeated so that when you go to the bottom of the page, the page starts again from the top and repeats. THis isn't happening with any other website. Just me or some other issue with the site?

  3. yet more superlative service. Questions posed, questions answered. Products delivered in what seemed like hours rather than days. I am not looking anywhere else for my cables. Rich

  4. Totally agree with those recommending starting with the best pure (passive) tone possible then making an assessment of what dimensions you want to (de)emphasise. I don't have a massively sophisticated "ear" so I started with bass tones equivalent to "robust new world red" in the wine tasting world. For me those tones were "jazz growl", "Warwick growl" and "precision punch" (or whatever). I get the precision tone pretty much straight off but prefer active so got some EMGs with built in preamp wired to original circuit. On the Warwick, the stock 3 band active preamp does all I need. The Jazz was a bit different cause I wanted more flexibility and control esp over mids so I looked for a replacement preamp with what I needed and went with reputation and experience (John East). If I didn't have to use so many different amps etc in so many different rooms I might have preferred to depend on outboard and amp eq. Don't quite understand the desire always to upgrade preamps pretty much whatever. I have played some cheap basses with decent basic tone that needed nothing changed and some £1000+ basses that were ruined by unnecessary electronics.

I think I might be adjusting my GAS from a 9.0 to one of these new Streamliners. Class A six stage valve pre, with 900w @ 8ohm class D power frame. Simple controls. I like.

  6. all hail Gareth! Thankfully a man so replete with pedals he forgets what he has, thereby allowing me to resurrect a long dead thread and nab a modded Bassballs. Excellent all round - clear communications, very quick dispatch and safely in my hands just a day later. Please trade with confidence when dealing with Gareth.

  7. SOLD SOLD SOLD

I have an SWR Workingman's 12 100w combo in excellent condition to sell. Board dated 1995, bought around 1998 so this is the original recessed amp design. Always used at home, never gigged - very mild scuffing on handle and grill. Loaded with Celestion K12T-200 + Le Son TLX-1 piezo horn with rear port. Usual SWR combo 3 band EQ + aural enhancer, limiter. Balanced DI out; tuner (unbalanced DI) out; headphones out; FX send/return with blend control; switchable - full range, horn off, headphones; 1/4" out for ext cab (min 8ohm) giving 120W.

Served me very well but updating my gear and "going micro". Will consider PX against Genz Benz 3.0, Little Mark 250 or LM2/3, EA iAmp or similar.

Good amp, looking for £150 collected. Open to offers esp. on PX. Collection from Edinburgh or could arrange delivery in Central Scotland.

  8.
Well i bought a Bongo today.Dropped out the miller route.Could not resist it.The orange colour bongo it is.Wont have it for a week and a half, cant wait now.The bongo seed was just growing bigger and bigger, they do look very cool indeed and as many say the musicman sound is huge.
as i said above, bongo or MM? win-win. You will love your Bongo - huge tone, also ensures the new Bongo police dont get too upset. when you get it post some pics so i can check out the orange!!

  9.
People who have a Marcus Miller without a Sadowsky pre?

I don't think you can just say it's a case of hearing it straight off record and sayin, 'oh, listen to that lovely preamp', but the only major complaint I regularly read about the bass is that the stock preamp is rubbish and that people have got comparably more 'Miller' tones with a better preamp, be it the East one or a Sadowsky one. It's therefore become pretty much conventional wisdom that the MM needs a preamp upgrade to live up to it's potential.

It may be that people just think it sounds better and automatically assume that it must be a more Miller-esque sound perhaps, I don't know.
I wasn't that offended by the stock pre in the MM but then again i wouldn't know Marcus Miller's tone if it came up and slapped me in the fizzog. What I do know is that a John East pre in just about any bass is a step up in terms of tone and control. THis was absolutely true with my Marcus.

  10.
Well put deposit on a Fender Miller in sunburst, looks very retro, got to wait 4 weeks now to get it fully paid for.I hate waiting for gear.Looking forward to getting it for keeps. It played great when i tested it.
great choice - nice bass, even nicer when you get it!

I would be interested in how you get on with the stock pre and whether you decide to upgrade. I am loving the tone of my Marcus more and more each day - I got mine from Gaf on here and he had it set up nice, after a wee tweak it sounded phenomenal, just on the cusp with a touch of fret, lots of grunt. The John East just allowed me to bring out the frequencies I liked just that bit more and tone down the others, esp with the variable mid control. The frequencies are tweaked slightly from the usual jazz retro to give it just a bit more sparkle but TBH i am probably nowhere near good enough to benefit from that kind of subtlety. Anyway, enough about me - enjoy your fabulous new bass.

  11.
£600 wow :) Nope, for basschat £300 it is. These Akais do seem to go for silly money on ebay these days.

I priced this one based on the 'silly money' versus how much I paid it for it new all those years ago and came up with a figure that, given these pedals have appreciated in value on the market, gave me a profit I was comfortable with. To be honest I think £600 is too much to pay but don't tell my wife I said that otherwise she'll have me adding another £300 quid on.
I think your attitude on the Deep Impact is great and really builds the spirit of Basschat. If you could just screw yourself out of another £200 or so I might just oblige :) .

  12. I own a Fender MM jazz with a John East retro fitted. It is absolutely superb, beautiful looking and the greatest Jazz I have played (I have played quite a few Fender vintage, modern and non-Fender boutique Jazzes). I didn't mind the stock Fender pre in MM so much, others hate it, but once I got the John East I was totally sold so I would just recommend you factor in a John East (£200 or so), especially for slap. I have only tried a Bongo once, great sounding (but ugly :) ) bass. Sounds like you have a win-win choice.

  13. congrats - my absolute 100% top GAS bass is the Zon Sonus graphite neck PJ config "Billy Gould" special :) . Great thing about that bass is I'll never afford it; problem with your really beautiful bass is that I think I might just be able to afford it :) . Thank god Harrogate is miles and miles away. Enjoy your special bass, mate.

  14. Great service from Dave. Quick and accurate advice, followed by quick and reliable delivery. Above all though its the quality of the product - superb! New customer but already a loyal one.
