1. Better is subjective. At some point you have to be content with your gear (unless you have endless funds). Besides, don't assume that you can judge which gear is "better" based on a five minute test - spend some time getting to know the amp and experiment. I was finding it tough to decide between the 6.0 and 9.0 - in the end I got a 6.0 because there were a lot of secondhand ones going for a good price at the time (9.0 had just come out). I love it and think it has plenty of oomph. If I ever need more I'll get a second cab! EDIT: spelling
2.
On an iPhone so quoting is a bit hard! Answers to your three questions below: 1. No, Midget/Compact is as loud as Compact/Compact, just less fat in the lower mids and leaner in the lows. Ultimate LF output is lower but it's still more than any 4x10" can manage. 2. No, none at all. You gain loudness, thickness and punch whilst the bottom doesn't get fatter but it gets bigger and deeper. 3. Yes. Put the Midget on the top - polar response is really good like that, which makes a big difference to real world performance. If your amp wobbles get some foam rubber matting or ask us for some foam tape to stick to your amp.
Thanks for the answers, very useful! This confirms what I suspected, that a Midget is the way to go. Time to start saving...
3. A minor thread resurrection but I'm also considering a second cab to go with my Compact. I really like the sound of the Compact, and like the idea of a second one the same, however a Compact + Midget would be a much easier fit in my car and I like the idea of using a Midget by itself for cafe gigs and quiet practice. So a few questions for Alex or anybody else who might know: 1. Is there much or any difference in sensitivity and power handling between a Compact + Compact and Compact + Midget stack? Does the double-Compact sound appreciably louder? 2. Is there any (apparent or otherwise) loss of low end with a Compact + Midget compared to a solo Compact (due to the strong midrange on the Midget)? 3. Is there any disadvantage from a sound point of view in stacking the Compact on top of the Midget instead of the other way around? The only ask because I use a Shuttle which doesn't sit nicely on strap handles. I'd also be very interested on hearing of people's experiences using Compact + Anything rigs. I've been keeping an eye on the tour threads but not much has happened yet :-). Thanks all!
4. The mute switch is more for changing instruments and silent tuning. It's at the start so that everything (including the DI) is muted except for the tuner out.
5.
Heavy strings need to be tighter than light strings for a given pitch.
Does the guage really affect the tension? My understanding was that it was purely down to scale length. Following on from that the different string thicknesses across a given set of strings is to match the tone between various string tensions.
6. I bought a Shuttle off MythSte and he sent me a laptop bag to go with it. Works a treat!
7. I bought a Shuttle head off Stephen, good guy to deal with. Delivery took a little longer than expected due to it being the silly season complete with snowed up roads, but it made it here in the end! I would certainly deal with him again :-).
8. I have one of these: Built like a tank, true bypass, easy to read. It has all sorts of intonation options (it comes with some preset sweetened intonations and you can manually program your own) that can be saved into presets. Personally though I just use it in chromatic mode. I looked at the Strobostomps, but not only are they pricey but I've heard of people experiencing dicky connections. The Turbo Tuner jacks aren't PCB mounted so you don't have problems with solder cracking. They also make a non-pedal version. Same features and a little easier to use the extended options, but not as bulletproof:
9. I started using flats when I got my fretless. I liked them so much that I put them on my fretted (Jazz) bass as well. So nice to play and no need to replace them unless they break.

11. Unlined with side dots/markers. Next bass I'm going to go dots only.
12. Hello all, newbie here. Newbie to Basschat that is, I've hung out on TalkBass for quite a while. I decided to join here since I now reside in the UK! Moved here from Aus for a change of pace a few months ago. Not sure of my long-term plans but I'm enjoying myself while I'm here. Unfortunately as you know bass gear is big and heavy, so all I brought with me was one bass, a couple of pedals and my trusty Cafe Walter headphone amp so I can jam with myself (and my laptop). The bass I have with me is a six string fretless which I built myself. There's a build thread over at TalkBass, or if you just want pics there's a gallery here. I'm feeling a little naked without an amp at the moment... so keeping an eye out for a Shuttle 6.0 or 9.0 at a good price. Cheers!
