I was there too, and I work with Seth on Fridays. He seemed pretty disappointed by it, but is positive about playing at other venues perhaps monthly. It's a shame as it's so wonderful to have those guys on my doorstep every thursday,. and I've enjoyed my gigs with John and Zak, as well as depping at the Bassment when they've been off touring. Let's hope they get it sorted asap!
You depped, on bass?
That is sad - I suspect a certain guitarist of my acquaintance will also be in mourning on hearing the news. Chelmsford has suddenly become a less interesting place. Didn't he have Dave Kilminster in the band at one point?
Dave, among a small handful of others, depped for Guthrie on occasion. Not an easy task!

Sounds like a Deluxe. 4 knobs, Vol, Pan, Treble/Bass stack and Mid. -

Can be used for bass! This the second largest in the Roland range This is around 2 years old but has been barely used and stored for most of the 2 years and is in unmarked, as new condition. Its not being used and deserves to be. Very powerful, lots of deep bass with no bass boost from the controls. Keyboard player has one in my Gospel band and it is an amazing sound. Its just been put on on ebay at an attractive £299 start. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330730583146?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_500wt_942 They're around £550 new. I'm looking for offers from Bass chatters around £400 (although hoping for more than that from the 'bay.) Hope I'm not breaking any rules about this being on ebay, also whether this should be in 'Other Musical Items'

US Jazz Reissues - which had the stacked knobs?

Ok, thanks, looks like its a replacement plate. -
Just googled Rockbox. You find that's noticeably better than MP3? Mines an old Creative Zen. 30Gb so loads of space but not sure this or anything else will run on it.

Jazz geek qu. I'm looking at a very nice bass which looks like a American Standard Jazz but has a control panel with the two stacked knobs, the bottom knob of each stack being black. I've only ever seen this on a '62 reissue, but that had no string through. This one does. I think its from the mid 90s. Was this original on any other reissue or anything? Seems an odd mod to make if not. Thanks for any help

I'm a pleb to all this, but very pleased at increasing popularity to MP3 alternatives. (Was beginning to believe a whole generation will be brought up on crappy quality playback and this end up reducing the quality of recordings) What do you play FLAC and/or APE files, a laptop? Any portable players play these formats?

Interesting, seems to confirm what the likes of Maurice and Alex Claber have been saying, ie stand your 2x10 and 2x12s vertically. (Hence their speaker designs do the same). Fender twins, Jazz Choruses etc all better on their end. I suppose the venerable 4x12 columns lost popularity when drums, keys, bass etc started to be mic'd up and they couldn't reproduce the highs and lows like the bin and horns set ups. (Also we use Mackie type powered speakers, the same sort of spl from something a fraction of the size (and cost) of two 4x12 columns and the valve PA mixer/amp of old!)
This thread is reminding me I must update my tatty stuff for something a bit more pristine...
That little H||H combo is exactly what I mean! If that was bought new now some people would be keeping it in its cardboard box. I'm ignoring the 'elephant in the room' part of the picture!

"I have sold my first bass, and recently my first Gibson bass - the G-3 set me off on a noble path but it just wasn't getting played like it used to. There's no room for sentimentality, it's expensive. Same goes for my wife - " >I wondered where this was going to go! "Instruments are to be played - my wife's only rule regarding my hobby." >A good rule! "I do think that irreversible modifications on basses above a certain price threshold is folly. I guess I do have one eye on the future and values etc." >But what if it makes it more useful? Back in the day (here we go again) people used to saw the bottom off Hammonds and put them on stands with the pedals etc remote. This meant it could be lifted into a van with the other stuff and not require one to itself. Can you imagine that happening now?
When I was a kid we loved cricket but couldn't afford a bat. We tried to fashion one from wood but it didn't work. The 62 strat my uncle had in his loft was perfect once we'd cut the sides off. Later, once I fell out of love with cricket and took up the guitar, I just glued some new chipboard sides on so it looked cool... what's the problem?
None! Strats (and their basses) are normally three bits of wood in the body so the outer two are just shapes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1fbGntY3QH8 You can here the Thanet sand can't you! Let's hope he doesn't use acrylic paint and hold the sound in.

Woe is me. Innocently went along to the Bassment last night to see The Fellowship and it turned out to be their last night! Glad I went but some colour in my life now has been tippexed out. (For those who don't know - and there's no reason why should - The Fellowship was a casual gathering of guitar whizz Guthrie Govan - look him up on Youtube, although that really doesn't do him justice - the amazing Zac Barrett on sax plus the inspiring regular line up of Seth Govan on bass, Pete Riley on drums and (usually) John Dutton on keys playing breathtaking jazz fusion in a tiny little bar for a fiver every Thursday for over 12 years.) I've always loved watching and hearing Seth on the bass, (how I'd love that tone from my jazz!), and will miss the long sequences of guitar/sax sync playing. I'm in mourning. <Edit> Zac did say they will still meet up and perform in the area but less regularly.
I'm no wiser.
This type of thing "I had a wonderful jazz last year- a real joy of an instrument but it had been kept so well I was slightly scared to play it- i just had got it and it wasn't 'my bass' yet that I wouldn't have minded damage. Ultimately I moved it on." We all look after our gear, that's fair enough, no-one is suggesting its ok to abuse it. But, I get the feeling that we've gone overboard on it, there's me with my sticker and door jambs being less critical if damaged than a cab, friends with expensive (but not unique) basses which don't come out the wardrobe, let alone house and a general feeling that changing one screw is somehow sacrilege and even enjoying these restrictions due to additional perceived value. This seems to make the gear rather less useful and I recalled a time when this didn't seem to be the case, yet the gear was relatively more expensive then. Are we more precious about it now than we used to be?
Ahh wouldn't part with home build number 2. for two reasons A, I like the sound and feel of it too much B, too many mistakes/learning experiences in the building to pass it on
Wow! (Or should that be Wal!) Not surprised

Here's my loved Hartke HA5000. Quite rare, amazingly powerful. Selling as I've gone micro. Got this from a fellow BChatter, its 2 x 250W with a pair of outputs from each and a switchable cross over. This means you can have one - four cabs plugged in with the same signal going into each, OR switch the crossover on and you can separate one or two cabs to receive the higher frequencies and the other one or two the low frequencies. You can also vary the cut off between the high and low to whatever frequency you want, and also balance the level between to the two to counter for different speaker efficiencies and the like. 'Mazing! I used to use a 2.5XL for the top and the Monster PRO1800 1x18 for the bottoms. The 210 could be driven really hard as all the deep stuff went to the bottom cab, which loved it. Goodness, this was a big sound. Don't be put off by being 'only' 250W + 250W, I most often used just the 210 at 12 O'Clock and never went past 2 O'Clock (very loud rock rehearsals, could never gig that loud!). With two cabs it really goes. Valve preamp, compressor, switchable graphic, high and low pass filters, usual DI and send/return etc, 4 speakers out, these are very well specified amps. Got a gig bag type flight case on it, holds all your cables etc with ease. Totally reliable, perfect working order, all leds work, pots silent, fan fine etc. £[s]250[/s] then [s]£225[/s] and [s]£199[/s] and now, £175 - this is cheap! Need to sell as I'm still buying stuff! Come try it out, Hornchurch Essex Message me for more photos questions etc.

<p>
What is it about then?
LukeFRC's post.
I try to look after my equipment and don't really understand why anyone wouldn't look after their equipment. I'm not precious about it and if it gets a dink so be it and I'm the same with other things in my life. I also carry spare batteries and strings and leads.
No, this isn't about not looking after your instruments/gear! Remember in the old days, new cars used to come with clear plastic seat covers. Some people used to keep them on. Felt crap to sit on but kept their seats clean.
Can I specific-ise and say I'm 53 and remain entirely relaxed about anything other than severe structural damage. As long as it was me that caused it
Right, that does it! The sticker is off the bottom of my amp and IN THE BIN! I've rebelled and I'm still only 52!
There are are a few self appointed 'experts' on here who can add decent contributions but they aren't definitive in the grand scheme of things by any stretch and the way things are parroted as gospel and perpetuated you'd think the whole game started and ended with them.... hmmm.. If that is your only source of info, then fine, but you really need to get out more and talk to more of the industry. There is more to it than swimming in the seas of this forum. Oh well.... Don't get me wrong, this is a nice place to be..and there are good reasons to be here but 90% of the bass players I know haven't even heard of BC... so guess what proportion of soundmen, engrs, gtrs and others players etc etc would have as well...???
Strange post.
