1. Or to paraphrase slightly:
"The proper method of philosophy consists in clearly conceiving the insoluble problems in all their insolubility and then in simply contemplating them, fixedly and tirelessly, year after year, without any hope, patiently waiting for the Royal Mail to admit liability and finally pay up for the bass they managed to wreck."
    :)

  2.
I have amongst other poweramps, a Soundtech Ps802. I like 1U amps and have various makes of 1U amps. I like the Soundtech, it does what it is supposed to do, but beware the fans make a bit of noise. I changed my fans and they are still audible. Not that your audience will hear it but you will.
+1 for the PS802. I hear ya about the fans thought, they are somewhat noisy. I SAID, THEY'RE A BIT NOISY.

As it happens, I've just bought a new Crown power amp -- haven't had the chance to try it in anger yet so can't comment, but I expect good things. :)

  3.
Norman is a great bloke, friendly and superb to watch. I caught up with him backstage at the London guitar Show earlier this year.

Im the good looking one by the way!!

And pic of him next to his new TE stack.
Is it just me, or does Norm look a bit like an extra from Dawn Of The Dead..?? :)
Awesome player though. We're not worthy, etc.

  4.
Jon crafted for me a beautiful instrument exactly as I wanted it, with a few choice suggested improvements of his own, for less than the cost of a new Stingray 5 and half the price of a comparable Sei or GB. 'Nuff said.
    Man's a genius.
I should add that this was his list price, & not a heavily discounted deal of any sort.

  5. See this bit here for full details.
A cracking little amp, punches well above its weight. You can either use it as a stand-alone combo, or pair it with another cab, or (like me) take the head out of the combo (4 screws, easy peasy) and use it with your cabs.
£400, no trades cos I need the cash to fund the new amp that I've already bought..!
It's heavy, so collection is much preferable. Alternatively we can arrange a courier.

  6. I used to have an old Quadraverb, I bequeathed it to CK. I found many of the sounds to be very useful (although surprisingly when you consider the name, the reverbs are pretty crap)... the chorus settings in particular are very flexible. The ability to change the waveforms and so on gives a wide variety of sounds... it even does a very passable impression of an old Yamaha E10xx delay unit's 'wobble'.
Can't remember any specifics though, sorry... was a while ago now.

  7. Oh thank almighty Zarquon, I was starting to think it was just me that hated the things. I've tried Ashdown amps stuff a number of times, and I've tried really hard to like them, but no. To my ears they just sound horrid unless you apply a ton of EQ -- for me, if an amp doesn't sound OK with the EQ flat, then forget it.

  8.
Loads of u guys use Yammys, Ive tried a few in shops and been totaly underwhelmed, by the sound, and presence let alone the lack of mystique of say a Fender and indeed any future residual value. Please put me right.
I have a Yam bass, it's a lovely instrument. I've been very impressed with all the Yams I've ever tried.
I see you have a '75 Precision. Well last time I played a Fender P-bass, I hated it. What, I thought to myself, is all the fuss about.

Funny thing, this differing individual taste, innit? :)

  9. Well I'm in a 13-piece band, so let's face it I'm never going to make any money out of it :)... but I'd sooner cut off my nads with a teaspoon than give up simply because of that. Don't sell up completely. Keep a bass and an amp of sorts, even if it's only a wee one. I guarantee if you sell it all, you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow etc.

  10. I use an Antex Gascat butane gas iron for everything, it's bloody marvellous. Use it anywhere, no mucking about with mains and such... just the job for that emergency cable repair at the soundcheck. It's brilliant for heat-shrink sleeving too. I've got several different tips for it ranging in style and size, so I can use the one iron for lots of different jobs. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I like to use a tiny bit of flux here and there... I know modern multicore solders have flux in them, but for some things a little bit extra really helps the solder flow and makes for a clean joint.

  11.
Horace Panter's "Ska'd for Life" is a much more relevant book for me having grown up in that era and loved the mod/ska scene. Interesting insight into the personal and emotional fragility of the band during the Ska explosion of 79-81.
Hey Tony,
They were my years too... ah, the ol' loafers and harrington and pork pie hat..! you'd recommend Horace's book then?

  12.
I'm going to put a pair of my dad's old pants on my head and stretch some strings right now - it looks like fun.
coffee->screen :) :huh: :huh: :huh:
