1. Hi Sarah

It's just a case of practise makes perfect! Do you have a friend who plays guitar or piano? Are can you program something into cubase or similar? If so get hold of as many chord charts as you can and get somebody to play through them. Or you could download chord charts for popular songs and practice playing alternative bass lines along to them on youtube etc.

Then start off smply by just playing root notes them, then start using fifths and octaves. Get used to the harmony and then try and slip some passing tones etc in. Use the theory you've learnt for the RGT grades to play arpeggios over the chords etc and just practice, practice and practice.

Hioope this helps. I've just tried to think of how I practiced this when I started out.

    Thanks

    Pete

  2. Just to add my bit:

I used to have a tuner that only showed the main notes of the strings, but it had a flat button. If I pressed the flat button twice it would give me two flats so it looked like I was tuning to Ebb (double flat), which is actually D! so if your tuner has that option you might be ok.

Just as a side. I trained my ear to recognize the difference by tuning down by ear and then testing it with a tuner. Keep trying and eventually you'll get the hang of it.

  3. Well it sounds to me like you have pa and monitor support. My Advice would be to get there early and introduce yourself to the Sound guy (and monitor guy if they have one) make friends with them and remember their names. Then when it comes to sound check call them by their names and tell them what you would like in your monitors, this works almost all of the time for me.

But If you've got a bit of GAS then find a more powerful 2nd hand amp. Ashdowns seem to go fairly cheaply.

    Have a good gig.

    Pete

  4. I studied a HND in Popular Music Performance at City College Manchester. I loved the course and as well as teaching the theory and techniques needed to be a musician, it teaches other skills like website building, tour planning and music technology/recording.
So I gained more skills than just how to play in a band, and being in an environment where you have other students and professional musicians to bounce ideas off and learn from is far more valuable than playing in a hundred sh1tty bands and venues (although this is valuable experience as a right of passage).

I also chose Manchester as it has quite a vibrant music scene but isn't as large as London so it's easier to get to know people and make a name for yourself.

So I would say decide what you want to gain from your studies. i.e do you want to purely improve yourself as a player and musician or do you want to gain more skills that you can transfer to whatever you decide to do with your life. And pick a city you want to live in and find the courses on offer. For instance in Manchester you have the more academic Salford Uni that runs a couple of good music courses or several colleges that offer Diplomas that are probably more vocation based.

But I think the most important thing to remember is to not just become a bedroom player, but to get out there and be involved with music as much as you can. That way you'll gain the invaluable experience hundreds of gigs and sessions can give you, mixed with the extra knowledge of the industry and your instrument studying can give you.

  5. Hi Guys

A guy at work is selling his Warwick Triumph EUB. Apparently it's in mint condition and comes with gig bag, stand and bow.

Not being an EUB player myself I don't know much about these but I'm sure anybody whose interested will know all the details.
It's currently in Johnny Roadhouse in Manchester if anybody want's to take a peak or try it out.

    Not sure what it's worth?

If anybody wants my mate's details send me p.m and I'll forward them on to you.

Here's some EUB porn for those of you in to that kind of thing:

  6.
Precisely. But again, that is not the issue.

If you can pull 200 punters it's unlikely you'd want to touch a P2P promoter - they do nothing to promote or put on a good night!

There are enough promoters that manage to put on coherent bills of unknown bands that can still run a viable business (Bugbear at the Dublin Castle springs to mind). They even pull in punters for their nights regardless of the bill because they have some quality control. P2P doesn't - they just need to fill their slots - 6 of them in the case of Club Mgriff!

There will always be bands that can't/can't be bothered to pull any punters, just like there will always be plumbers who can't do their job properly. But you wouldn't deliberately hire a crap plumber and then charge him upfront in case he does a bad job!
I completely agree with the comment about quality control. There are several venues I've played in the Northwest that promote themselves and do enough work to be known as a place to see quality live music. And then there are others where the promoter just takes on any sh*te band whose moms, dads, aunties uncles neighbours dog comes to see them.

If all venues are pay to play it means bands wanting to expand out of their 'catchment area' can't do. Because they can't get 50 people to travel a hundred or whatever miles to watch them.

You're right my band Karma does work in these situ's http://basschat.co.uk/style_images/basscha...icons/icon6.gif
Vman in Manchester springs to mind

  8. I just use an Ashdown Mag 250 C115 (combo with the 15 inch speaker). It cuts through most of the time and is plenty loud enough. But when we gig in venues without a P.A it tends to fall short. So I'm looking to upgrade to maybe the Hartke LH 500 and an XL 410 or something similar. But the combo has done me proud for the past 5 years. I know they get slated a lot round here but it's reliable and I've never had a problem with it. People actually compliment my tone as well.

  9.
hi,i use a ha550 head with vx cabs(4x10,1x15)and i think they're great.there's loads of uummph in the head and the vx cabs are nice and light;and i can hear every note nice and clearly.the tube pre-amp isn't that great but the sound is loud and i can dial in most sounds.
hope you get what you want. :)
Yeah I had looked at the VX cabs. They are very light. I thought I had it all sorted and I wanted a HA3500 and 410TP. Now I'm all confused. I guess I'll have to wait to see what kind of money I can get together, and how much talking round 'the boss' will need.

  10. I don't know about this specific model but I have played a few Corts. They were all of a fairly decent standard. I used to have a bass teacher who used one as a back up bass and occasionally gigged it. He really liked it and I ended up nearly buying one.

I know this doesn't help in reference to the particular model you're looking at but as I said decent standard for the price.

  11.
Fair enough. I could do with shifting it soon which sounds awful as it's such a great amp but I've already spent the money (as you do). :)

Good luck with your hunt for your Hartke
Thanks Mate. And good luck with your sale.

  12.
It will run with much lower rated cabs. I've been running it with a Marshall MBC410 rated at only 600 watts without any problems. It should run into a 410XL without any problems too. Just go sparingly with the volume. Running a 1000 watt head into a 400 watt 8 ohm cabinet means the amp isn't going to have to work so hard therefore theoretically, you will get a clearer sound than a 350 watt head turned up to 6 or 7 to achieve the same perceived volume.

I found the Hartke heads sounded very hollow and too clinical for me and the HA5500 just didn't have enough umphhh to cut it.
It really does look like a great amp. But I've had the chance to try the Hartke in a gig situation and was happy with it. If I had the chance to try the Laney I might be blown away. But I wouldn't want to buy something without trying it out first. It looks like you're in a hurry to shift your amp too and I'm still at the decision making/fund gathering stage at the moment.

  13.
It's not that heavy really, not much more noticable than the transporters when lugging, also it has the pull out handles so it's easier to carry, esp for two people. I tried the TP range and didn't like them all that much so ended up buying the two XL ones (also i had the HA5500 head so they were a bit underpowered).

    Specs from the website - 4x10 TP is 65 (29kg) and the 4x10 XL is 88lb (39kg)

It's up to you though dude!

    Cheers

    Steve
Hmmm. I suppose 10 kilos is nothing to a man of my stature! I am very tempted. I'll do a bit more research etc and think about it. If I find the right head at the right price I might just give you a shout.

  14.
*Shameless plug* Don't know how much a Hartke head is these days, but if you want some serious muscle check out my Laney B1, for sale here A hugely powerful (1500 watts) and much respected amp (ask any Basschatter) and much better than the Hartke HA5500 I used to own
I hadn't seen this in the for sale section. It looks as though it may be a little too powerful for what I'm looking for though.

  15.
Sorry to hijack the thread to shamelessly plug my cab.......

    I've got a 4x10XL in excellent condition for £190.

It's the usa built one, not the chinese ones available now (Hartke switched all of their manufacture overseas a while ago).

It comes with a cover (these are about £30+) and a high quality Cordial Hiflex lead (about £15 IIRC)

It's 400w @ 8ohms, if you wanna try it i'm in blackpool so not too far away

Thanks Lemmywinks. I had seen your cab. But I'm a little worried about the weight I don't want anything heavier than the combo I already have (It's a bit of a walk from my flat to the car park round the back). I will certainly keep it in mind.

  16. Hey thanks for that Merton. I forgot to add that I had already read everything there is to read on the LH500 and although it really appeals to me I'm not sure I could use it with a transporter cab because of the power ratings? And I casn't really afford any other lightweight cabs. I'm looking to spend £400 at the most.

Good luck with it Merton. They look like awesome amps

  17. Hi Guys

So I'm thinking of upgrading my Mag 250 C115 combo to separates. I've had the chance to play through a Hartke HA 3500 at a couple of gigs. And I liked the sound. Unfortunately I can't seem to find one second hand at the mo. But there seem to be a few Ha 4000 heads going. I've never played through one of these so I'm interested in the differences. I know the 4000 doesn't have the tube pre-amp. Has anybody played both and can they tell me how they differ?

I'm also thinking of getting a Transporter 4x10 cab (mainly because of the weight). Does anybody know how these differ to the XL ranges etc?

Any opinions are welcome. As are offers of similar heads/cabs.

    Thanks Guys

    Pete

  18.
Were they 'Total Guitar' Bass Specials? I've got 3 of them somewhere, and they all came with cover CDs (which is a very good idea). I know Flea and Rob Trujillo were both cover stars.
I think they got Roger Newell in to help out with it, which would help make it familiar to old 'Bassist' readers.
Yeah that was the one. I might see if I can dig them out tonight. I have the Rob Trujillo and Flea editions but missed any others. I'd love to get the others.
