I agree with those who say that "budget" should mean up to around £300 these days. All but the most budget of modern instruments are very good indeed. CNC machinery, etc ensures that tolerances and build quality are all on the money. The phrase "hand made", unless describing an expensive instrument, may well mean fit and finish is less good than it would be on a factory built instrument that has been made primarily by robots and machines (which don't have off days, fall sick or take holidays). Economies of scale and modern manufacturing methods mean we get a lot of functionality and quality for our money nowadays.

You tend to get better components when you spend more, but even that isn't a given. I have a £500 Cort that has Hipshot bridge and tuners and Bartolini p/us. Not top of the range Hipshot or Bart stuff, but perfectly decent. The fit and finish of it is way better than that of my 1972 J bass.

but which one would you grab in a house fire?

  2. Zoom LiveTrack L-20.

Looks and acts a little like an analogue desk but also doubles up as a 20 discrete channel input DAW, recordable on usb drive, memory card or direct to laptop via usb cable. We record all our gigs and play with them later in Reaper or Harrison mixbus.

Also has bluetooth to tablet for wandering about mixing.

Great preamps and fx, gates, 16 standalone compressors, 3 band mid parametric eq etc..

scene setting for recalling each venue so less messing about in regular venues.

6 monitor mixes with each one an individual mix

    Yes I am a fanboi!

only downside so far is the power supply is a bit flimsy

Hey Steve, still after more volume :)

It’s hard to tell just from the specs how good these will be and how well they will integrate with your RCFs. They are remarkably cheap for something with what looks like a decent crossover, a power amp and 15” speaker. It’s hard to see how they could have spent much on the speaker and it is likely that it will have restricted excursion or an undersized motor system. However it is remarkable just how much some of the cheaper gear is giving you nowadays for your money.

On the plus side they will allow you to get more out of your tops and our ears aren’t very sensitive to bass so it is always surprising just how much modest subs will add to your sound. If you are lucky they will have DSP protected the speakers from over excursion so you shouldn’t have to worry about pushing them.

These look so like my Wharfedale subs I checked to see who owned HH, it’s actually Laney. That’s probably good news as Laney are making a lot of solid old school kit. We pulled apart a Laney PA speaker recently and it had quite a decent class A/B amp in it. For the price it sounded great. If you are lucky you might have bought an unremarkable but well priced and specced speaker.

Really interested in how you get on with this in practice. Gigging up near the Somerset borders soon?

The cabinet cuts off between 100 & 200 Hz based on the crossover control. It’s unsuitable as a bass guitar speaker without a full range cabinet to cover above the HF cutoff of the sub cabinet

ok but would they be any good as part of a full PA setup?

Enjoy the Zoom B1-4 - I'm still loving mine and it's sitting at the heart of my pedal board.

A few B1-4 patch idea downloads at the start of this thread. You'll need to download the free ToneLib software to be able to access.

same here, needed a new phaser pedal and thought for the same money get a used B1four. Handy little thing.

That is MAX or peak so probably 122dB real world but two of those will pack a punch. Should keep up with two tops easily.

    I hope so.

We have 2 x 315 RCF Tops and 2 x  315 RCF wedge monitors (The same as the tops) so hoping for a decent level of clarity and punch. Everything mic'd up apart from Markbass combo which is DI.

I have both the b and c as well as the mel

I use them both in my classic rock covers band ( purple, whitesnake, rainbow etc..), and Ozzy/ sabbath trib to give the thickness that keyboards can give.

I find the work best sent to PA, rather than through my bass rig, and have built simple systems for this to work.

combine them with a freeze type pedal, and you could have keyboard pads for days lol

brilliant, thank you. Can you blend the signal so more bass with just a hint of organ/keys background?

  8. So we do this shine on you crazy diamond/Floyd thing as well as some other proggy stuff in our set (Hocus Pocus for instance). I'd love a keys player but as that isn't going to happen any time soon I was considering using one of the above pedals to add a little organ blend. Anyone been down this road with either the C9 or B9 and if so, did it work? I know they are really designed for geetar but I've seen a couple of (dodgy) YouTube demos on bass. They're pretty pricey even used so I'd like a bit of feedback before biting the bullet. Thanks!
