One of those basses I always liked the look of but never got around to picking one up. Now I really wish I had - before MIJ/80s stuff became sought after these were going for under £100, like most other headless types.

I think Westone was, initially at least, a Matsumoku house-brand, so good quality was pretty much guaranteed. One day I'd still like a Rail, Super Headless, Thunder II/III, Quantum...

Jon. . . . .  you should have said something years ago. . . . both now gone back into circulation. 🤔

  2. Classic Ibanez is my favourite Japanese brand, closely followed by the likes of Aria, Yamaha etc.

The newest one I have and that is now quite a few years old, is a beautiful SR900.

The remainder are mainly 70s and 80s.

This little beauty, a cracking bass, ended up with Truckstop, of this parish but was mine for quite a time. He sold it on and regretted it. Hiya mate. . . if you drop in here. :i-m_so_happy:

One of the oldest is this rare 70s Ibanez Destroyer 2495B.

I can't say I have ever played or owned a Classic Ibanez that I wasn't pleased with and that goes for the guitars, as well but that would be naughty putting them up on here!:D

Will come back with a few more. :)

  3. This may help some with temp relief.

I have had it for over 40 years (mine is a high pitched whistle) which I believe was caused by testing/running Burman Valve amps at very high volumes, in a small studio! What would the older me tell the younger me. . . . . . "Turn it down a bit, squire!!" O.o:D

This works for me. Doesn't last very long but it does give some relief and reminds me of what my hearing was like, pre 1978!! :tatice_03:

  4. This may also help:

    Ovation Magnum Strings

See details at the bottom of the post.

I was asked so many times, I measured it all up. The ones you can see on my Mag II are Stadium Elites, which as you can see, have plenty of length in them.

The other shots are of the Mag III I had but now belongs to another BCer. The strings on that were as it came to me, with Roto Swings on, which fit but the silks sit within the nut. Surprisingly, they were quite bright, with no damping due to the silks.

The Elites do suit the bass, in my opinion.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers. : )

Nice to see a thread I started in 2009 resurfacing!

My obsession hasn't slowed in the years that have passed... in fact I just took delivery of my latest T40 today!

     A beautiful sunburst 82...

Which joins the 82 family -

And the rest! I'm trying to collect all the finish options from 1982 as that's when I was born... The other 2 aren't from my birth year so they'll be sold on once I find their replacements!

Hello mate, nice to see the Black and White one, which you had years ago, along with the additions. Top Job - Glad you are still a Die Hard T-40 fan.

Tommorichards has asked about some T-40 info, which I have replied to today and sent him a link to the thread I started, running alongside yours. Unfortunately, a lot of the pics were on the old Photobucket but there are some of your old posts on there.

All the best. Cheers. : )

  6. Thanks for that - not seen that one. : )

Knowing that this one is fretless, would account for some of it, as well as settings on the amp but I have one the same as this, in a red burst and the tone is sort of piano-like. bright, defined and percussive. You can, of course, roll that off but in general terms, a punchy,  powerful sound.

    Cheers. : )

  7. Curious to know how you got on. :D

The Ned, as you know, is part of the Peter Cook legacy. You mentioned Firebirds - Del had a Peter Cook Firebird Twin Neck.

Couple of pics with Del, Six over Twelve. I have the other one, Twelve over Six.

Have you tried putting  the magnum III in there you might be surprised how well it fits ......  😉 Mine is in a Mag 2 case

I'm  actually the current custodian of Flat Eric's Grey-burst  Magnum III ... Magnum+III.jpg
for anyone who has never played one of these they don't sound anything like you think you might think there all mud ... but they really growl and bark when you need them too , interesting ... did you add the thumb rest along the top to mimic  a magnum II's  mine doesnt have one and it would definatly improve playability.

    Synth / lyle

Lovely bass that - glad you are still lovin' it! I would like to back you up on the sound - it is surprising the range of tones that you can squeeze out of it.

The thumb rest is not original but I too, like the feature on the Mag II, which means you can easily place your thumb where you want. I was going to do that but make it so it sat on top of the pick-up rings, that way you could remove it an leave no evidence.

    Happy Jack, Hi.

The way I understand it, the Mag II was a bit of a Marmite bass, as you can see in the link below, an unusual but comfortable shape, so Ovation went more conventional with the III, to attract more buyers. Ditched the stereo, the script on the scratchplate and the sliding damper.

In terms of sounds, they are pretty much identical, I couldn't tell the difference. A really great Bass.

Good luck with the sale. : )

    Cheers. : )

Good things come to those who wait - not much option if you're looking for one of these.

And yes, that's a Kahler Trem!

The bass has been modded over the years with the Kahler and a strange active circuit but you can still play it Passive as well and the active and passive each have their own volume control presumably so you can balance the two different sounds.

All the work seems to have been done to a very high standard and the original wood working, timbers and finish are all excellent and surprisingly well preserved.

It sounds and feels great and (IMO) looks fantastic so well chuffed with this one. I've only been looking for about 25 years!

Sorry I'm late to this party! Happy New Year. : )

WOW!!! Well done that man!! In standard form, a stunning bass - mine has a Piano like tone and almost every note sounds like it is trying to climb out of the instrument. Yours clearly has way more tonal options. Not sure I would find any use for the wammy but considering how hard these are to find, even globally, if you were looking for one, it had to be done.

I haven't played mine for AGES and it is one of quite a few that I have never photographed, perhaps now it the time to dig him out!

More Odyssey stuff here: Odyssey Basses and Guitars

    Congratulations on an excellent find.

    Cheers. : )

  10. For anyone who was here ten years ago, you may remember me and my blog. :D

Under the old forum format and with the original Photobucket, there was a fair amount of content that was put up on here and I kept in touch with many of the members via PMs but with the change over, mine and everyone else's didn't make the transition and I sort of lost touch with those who were around at the time, along with all the information that went with it.

The blog carried on but due to my personal circumstances, less content was posted but as of yesterday, the beginnings of my ramblings are now ten years old, with 250 posts. :hi:

So, Hi and thank you to all those who have visited the blog over the years - I am now hoping to get it back into gear and put up more content.

    Bass and Guitar Collection Blog

Anyone from days of yore, would be great to hear from you.

Grants Music was clearly a distributor as well as a retailer - how do I know this?  I bought my Grant-branded nasty shortscale starter bass brand-new, from Unisound Music in Chatham, Kent.

Unisound, along with other local music shops stocked a range of Grant-branded guitars & basses, so it's evident Grants had a dealer network to which they could have distributed other brands they dealt with. I think it's reasonable to think they might have been sole UK importer for Odyssey Guitars, and if other evidence points to Scotland that would support that idea.

Forward thinking on Atilla's part - start from the north, as opposed to London? Just thought it was ironic that the renewed intrest in this was started on the "Grants are pants" thread! :D

    You couldn't make it up!!

  12. EMG456 - " In which case yours is the one I have played! I think I maybe also re-strung it as well. I used to work with Jimmy in Edinburgh and Glasgow. "

You may be able to help - I have never really known how the ones in the UK got here - the only leads I have ever seen, point to Scotland.

Can you remember how many were on display - one, a few, several - Guitars as well? Could he have been the only importer/dealer? Grateful for any info.

    Cheers. : )

  13. This has been done before and there are current threads discussing the subject but following a chat with Jon (Bassassin) - we decided it was a good idea to start another, as the last one was started in 2016 and with the changes to the forum, what has been tranfered doesn't look good, so - here we go again!:D

This bass is the reason I joined up to Basschat, almost ten years ago - I had been a "lurker" but I finally came out, when I saw a post about the Atilla Bologh Odyssey Bass.

I featured the bass, as one of my very first posts on my blog: Odyssey Bass For those not familiar with me (I have not been on here much since things changed - getting old and used to familiarity:lol:) I have run a blog for the last 10 years: Flat Eric's Bass and Guitar Collection and started a long running thread about the Peavey T-40 and was a regular contributor, back in the day.

Jon and I have always had banter about these basses, as when he found out I had two of the same model, he couldn't understand why he couldn't have one!! :laugh1:

There is a small vid here (up to around 35 seconds, the rest is just mush) which shows the same model, as two of mine.

I will be putting up more info on here but for now, Jon and I are very interested in any knowlege, ownership, experience of Atilla Balogh's work.

    Back real soon.

    Cheers. :)

THIS IS THE SAME AS MY OTHER ONE!! : )

The copy has to be the ultimate tribute to Atilla Balogh - I have never seen this before - amazing that they took inspiration from a low volume maker, based on Granville Island, Vancouver and built their take on it. Would really love to see one. . . anyone out there?? : )

    Cheers. : )

Calling @FlatEric - Eric has two Odysseys, no idea if one of 'em's your old one but I bet he wouldn't sell it! Been trying for years to persuade him to part with one...

Back (almost) on topic - did anyone else know there was a Japanese copy of the Odyssey, made by Moridaira?

  15. I bought this, ten or 11 years ago and still play it. Hondo Pro

When I play through an average amp (don't have any boutique amps) is "sounds" like a P does on a recording. Several Fender players have had a go through their rig and have bee "quite impressed"

I've got another Hondo P, the one with the Kluson tuners (can't remember the model but I'm sure jon will enlighten us) which is in white, same sort of quality. Nice. 🙂

@FlatEric, I remember we spoke about these a while ago but I can't remember if you said whether your other one has the chequered body binding or not - I would love to find one of those!

Hi. Yes, I have that one as well. Bart pick-ups and a piano like tone. I have seen it for ages, so may go a hunting for it. I have no pics of it, at all but when I do lay my hands on the old fella, I will stick it up on here.

    Cheers. : )

FlatEric, that's an amazing looking bass, I must say :)
Beautiful colour & wood grain. Nice design. I agree with alembic1989 re the brass nut & hardware too
Just wondering though, why all the switches? What do they all do? Must admit, they do seem to "add" to the look of it though :)

    Why, thank you. :)

Series/parallel to each pick-up and the third one in is in/out of phase - two vol and two tone.

I have put this up to tease Jon - Bassassin. 😂

I have two of these and have not seen another in the UK. . . from memory.

Atilla Balogh Odyssey - around 1976/1977 - My most used bass. . . by far.

  19. I went to visit him, some years ago - to show him a bass he had made.

In a nutshell, a great bloke. Was with him for about an hour and he was very happy to have a chat, whilst sipping on our tea. There was dust everywhere and various things that were mid construction but when you saw the finished article - quality.

    Doug's workshop and my bass.

    Cheers. : )
