Hi. 😊
I have a CMI Artist, had it for years - absolutely cracking.
Not really a regular fretless player, but it doesn't stop me having a go. . . . . on my own!
Interesting, are the notes from Jon. 👍

Only just seen this.
Sad news.
I never got to meet up with Nick. We exchanged messages about our collections and talked about a meet up several times but it never happened.
Another lesson on not to leave these things too long.
Thoughts go out to Nick's sister and family.

I started this thread asking for input from people who have actually used rick-o-sound. As you have not used it, this thread is not for you.
If no one has tried rick-o-sound, I fully expect this thread will be:
If/when I do acquire a 4003, I will try rick-o-sound, and will post about how it works for me. If I do find it to be pointless, that is what I will post, however I will keep an open mind until then.
I have tried it - running each pick-up into different amps, but not with a genuine Ric. I have done this with two basses, an Aria Pro II "Faker" and Ovation Magnum, which also has a stereo output. I used the Magnum lead on the Aria.
The user manual for the Magnum describes using the Normal and Bright channels on the same amp.
It then goes on to describe using two amps.
I can't say that I took to it. Yes, different sounds could be got but nothing spectacular. The other thing, during the only rehearsal I used the set-up, my "Six String Colleague" commented. . . . "what the BLEEP is going on here? He put up with it for the evening and then told me not to bother again!!
Magnum Stereo There is a link near the end which takes you to the Ovation manual - an interesting read on its own.
The Aria, I messed around with myself, using effects as well. Again, entertaining but nothing I would use on a gig.
Bit of a novelty that you could use. . . . or not.
As you say, if you get the Ric, let us all know your thoughts.👍
Cheers. 😊

TRC Looks similar to Seiwa, which I'm sure Jon told me was Chushin.

Many years later. . . . I still can't help you but after all those years, I still have the bass with the Jim Cairns neck.
Maybe someone bought this gem of a bass and a bit like you, can't bear to be parted with it.
Frustratingly, they are keeping shtum, fearing the loss of it.
Can you blame them?
I genuinely feel your pain.
Fingers crossed. 🤞

As a magazine editor...
The layout of a magazine article has copyright for 25 years, but the content is copyright for 70 years after the author's death.
But, works can be copied in any medium if they are used solely to illustrate a point, are not for commercial purposes, and are accompanied by sufficient acknowledgement. You should only use the minimum required to make a point e.g. a page not a whole article.
Hiya.
Bit like the response from BRX. . . . . very interesting!!
It isn't for any form of financial gain and it is to explain/enhance a feature.
This, for example, took images from various sources, to explain /enhance understanding - some of it given by Peter.
So, taking what you have detailed (I admit there are no acknowledgements on these) this is what you mean/imply?
Again, I was pointed to some of these by Peter, who himself, was a journalist - these are sort of one page, to illustrate.
Would this be OK, from the way you have explained it?
In the past I have used things that I couldn't attribute to anyone/organisation and no one has taken issue from it.
To confirm, not one penny has been earned from anything I have posted.
😎

Thanks to you all, food for thought.
BRX - Thank you for your input, I have read it a couple of times and I will perhaps read it a couple more, to make sure.
I thumb through my books now and again and my International Musician mags (70s and early 80s) and think they would make great reading to the world out there. The Mu:zine route may be interesting, I will try and contact them.
Cheers. 😊

Hi. 😊
This is music related, so hope I have put this in the right section?
Some of the more longer standing members would be aware of my blog.
Progress on it has been slow but promised myself to crack on again in 2025.
So. . . . . I have quite a few books/publications/magazines, some dating back 40+ years and in truth, I have pinched an image/article now and then, only one page.
I now want to take extracts and post them on the blog, the first ones coming from "The Complete Guitar Guide" 1982.
The copyright is David Lawrenson/Virgin Books 1982.
I have googled these details and ended up with Random/Penguin, no mention of Virgin, as time has passed.
Has anyone had any experience/asked permission for copyright to extract some information on articles? is it relatively simple? Lots of jumping through hoops? Are there any financial implications?
Also looking at extracts from old (1970s) International Musician (I have a lot of them) and found mu:zine who say details could be used from their site, as long as it's a link and been attributed to them. They only have a few of the mags, though.
I've had my images/posts copied many times. I believe I would own the copyright but never been asked but mine is non commercial.
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers. 🙂

Pics and details of the custom here:
https://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.com/2010/10/doug-wilkes-guitar-builder.html
As I said, lucky enough to meet him and now recall something from the visit that I forgot to put in the post.
When Doug decided to tweak the rod (I thought it was fine but was better when he had laid his hands on it) it obviously would have altered the pitch.
Having tweaked the rod, he down tuned all the strings and brought them up again, all by ear and no tuner.
Finished my coffee, shook him by the hand and headed home.
After all the years of playing around with stringed instruments, he must have perfect pitch. At home, checked it - bang on correct. Most impressed. 👍
I can't find any pics of the fretless. It was a model of Doug's range when he was making production instruments in Hanley.
Looks a similar shape to the OP but with two Jazz pick-ups.
Must dig it out. 👍
Cheers. 😊

Gorgeous!!
I have two Wilkes basses - a custom (for someone else that I bought) and a lined fretless.
Both absolutely cracking basses.
Lovely bloke, lucky enough to visit him.
Hang on to that bass. 👍

Thank you all for your input.
I had forgotten this but I had Cakewalk YEARS ago, running on Windows 95 or 98 and struggled with that.
From memory (it was a very long time ago) it certainly was not straightforward and certainly not intuitive.
I think that is why I was attracted to GB, as all I knew who had tried it, said it was pretty easy to get on with.
With that in mind, I may have a go with Reaper, as there is the trial version and see how I get on.
I don't think this will happen until the new year, with everything else going on, so sit tight and I'll report back.
Would I need anything else to connect - I seem to recall that I just went straight into the sound card before, on a micro jack.
Cheers. 😊

Wot @Woodinblack said. Garage Band is mac specific. If you're looking for a low cost DAW, I'd suggest Reaper. It's really good. You get a free trial for 60 days, but you can also just keep on clicking the "Keep evaluating" button indefinitley after those 60 days without any reduced functionality (ask me how I know 😉).
Taaaaaaaaaaaa.
Will take a look. 😊

There is not and never will be a GarageBand for windows, but there are quite a few other DAWs that are sort of similar if you look around, depending on what you want. Don't download anything that tells you it is GarageBand for windows!
Thank you, just as I suspected. Cheers.
Anything that could be recommended to run on windows 10, that is simple to use and effective?
Cheers. 😊

Hi All. 😊
I have done a search on here for anything relating to Garage band software for windows, but not found anything. There are various bits of info on the net and I have even found a "Free Download", which I am quite suspicious of. . . . . .
Anyone got Garage Band or something very similar on a Microsoft Windows system?
Cheers, 😎

An absolute beauty, looks very original. Do you have a moulded case for it or a standard one?
If you are interested in the Peavey T Series, it's beginnings, variations and history etc, you may like to have a look here, if you haven't already visited it.
Peavey T Series Basses and Guitars
I am a big fan of the Peavey T - some nice ones, also shot in the garden.👍
Read and scroll and when you get to the bottom, click Newer posts and carry on.
Lots of interesting info.

It's a borrowed image. The last time I saw my old one (it came into my hands for a small repair) the brass was heavily tarnished and someone had totally wrecked the very basic wiring.
Understood.
Sending you a PM 👍😎

Cheers, guys.
Mine was the one with the two Bart buckers and herringbone binding. IIRC, Jimmy Grant had the full range of these basses, inc a B100 fretless with an unlined ebony board and a B100 with what looked like an MXR 6 or 7-band graphic inside it.
Dunno if my one's still in the Lothians. As mentioned in the Grants are Pants thread, I'd like her back!
Nik Nik, is this image one you have borrowed or is it your actual bass?

My memory is a bit foggy but I do recall playing a couple of Peter Cook basses back in the early eighties, when I was distributing leaflets for a local music shop at the London Guitar Show (then called The Live Music Show) at Olympia (I think, could have been Earls Court). The foggy bit is whether they were set up in the show itself or whether it was down the road in a hotel, as I remember a manufacturer mini-show in a hotel suite down the road, showcasing their wares away from TLMS. I remember the basses being fabulous though, and gave me my first glimpse of how a handmade, high-end bass compared to its more mass produced brethren.
Hi.
This is the one I think you referred to. Is this how you remember it? If you read the script, it dates from 1980.
Check out Larry DiMarzio's Snake Skin Boots!!!! Wow!!!
Cheers.😊

Hi. 😊
As per my reply to Cosmo, somewhere there is a pic of Peter, at perhaps that show.
I will look into it and come back to you.
Cheers. 👍

Welcome back @FlatEric, we've missed you!
PC made my official favourite bass ever, the one I drew all over my school books and will one day have a custom built to match it (despite the now-obvious horrendous ergonomics).
Hello chap, hope all is good with you. 👍 Just busy with life in general but hope to have a little more input on here. . . . part of the old boys!😅 Let's face it, a few years have passed by since we first posted on here, 15+for me. . . I think!
Yes, I used to doodle guitars. There are some posts on my blog that relate to tubs of stuff that Peter and I went through and found the original tmplates for The Flame and other stuff!
I will try and find the post and PM a link to you, there may have been some original scribbles for your hearts desire. Sit tight,I'll see what I can find.
Cheers. 😊

NBD Greco RB-85 Bass
in Bass Guitars
Posted
I have what Greco referred to as Paul McCartney Bass - PMB.
I love Greco anyway, so may be slightly biased. Perhaps one of the nicest basses "of that shape" I have played.
Greco PMB Bass
Sure you'll love it. 👍😊
