By the way I've got two wizzy 10's
Would one of these make an extension to the coda?

    cheers

  4. Interesting question, IHE to really use a mic live you need a) a really good mic and :) a soundman that really understands a limitations of amplifing a double and knows how to get the best out of it. I've used a bunch of different mics and pickups and had various success but in the end it always boils down to the ability of the soundman that made the difference. In terms of gear I now have a DPA4099B it's an excellent but of kit and sounds wonderful I've done several festivals with just the mic in the FOH but and say but, this was a trio gig with no drums, I saw Eric Revis with Branford a while ago using just a mic and he sounded great and he plays with Tain so it can be done, also Carlos Henriquez is a mic only user and recommended the DPA to me. However most of the time I use a Realist in to an Acoustic Image the sound is really good in the mix (with my bass at least) it's also hassle free especially in cramped environments.

Anyway just my two pennith worth.
Hey Jennifer -

I had the mic head positioned so that it was looking towards the G side F-hole, but not directly over it. It was close to the notch in the F, at about a 45 degree angle pointing in. Any closer or above the F-hole and it sounded like the mic was in a wind tunnel (which I guess it is, so to speak).

Also had some joy (for recording more than live) with the mic pointing straight up towards the tuning pegs, parallel to the front table, but you have to be careful muttering abuse about your band mates - the mic can be more sensitive than you want
This is a great combo and has been a wonderful servant but I'm having to big up for several gigs I'm doing and need a larger cab and separate head, I have the cab now thanks to a fellow bass chatter so is there anyone interested in doing a swap I need at least 500watt I do everything in terms of musical styles so I need to something versatile, cash either way depending on what it is.

  8. Hi Chris

My best answer is it all depends, does the venue, band, festival etc. have a good FOH with a professional engineer not just some one who owes a PA, it can drastically alter your approach with a good engineer you can use just a mic and experience a beautiful sound both out front and on stage depending who you are playing with of course, if not and they are stressed and inexperienced they'll either want to take a DI direct from your piezo easiest for them the worst possible scenario for you or if there's room, from an on stage amplifier of your choice. If it's a gig in a pub or restaurant you'll probably want to use a piezo in to an amp as you'll be cramped for space you get paid to play not to mess around trying to deal with a mic that's feeding back but in saying that my colleagues and I have done some interesting experimenting using a sabine FBX 820 and behringer FBQ EQ we've had some good results with a mic in to an RCF 312A, but that's in a rehearsal or sound check never on a gig

I have a DPA 4099B mic which is wonderful I use FOH 100% of the time at the moment, I have Realist pickup and an Erhlund contact mic and pre-amp and mix and match depending on the venue and who I'm playing and what the gig requires, sometimes if the music is dense and there are a lot dynamics I use Realist only, my amp has notch filter and I can eq out any feedback that might happen. Now my bass suits the new style Realist, I had a lot of trouble with the old one and used a Full Circle and Wilson for a long time but I couldn't deal with the boing or quack you get from certain piezo plus I use Olives which are gut cores which sound dreadful with certain pickups. I do folk gig where I use mic only and had the best sound I've ever had so again it all depends.

One final thing is this is personal to me the why I play my bass and the way I want to hear music so these are my experiences there are other players on here that have great results using other gear.

    Hope this helps

  10. Hi Keith

That's very kind of you but it looks like I'm going to be doing more of these acoustic singer song writer folk gigs and they really like the bow and pizz in the same tunes so I'm going to have to buy one.

    Thanks again.
