1. I had to give up playing in bands when my daughter (now three) arrived as I just couldn't balance it with work and home and, ultimately, it's by far the lowest of those priorities.

However, I've still been able to find time to practice (you do start to get time eventually) and (I think) I've improved my technique a little as a result.

The other thing I've done, which is admittedly quite sad, is to record songs with my daughter - mostly funk stuff with silly lyrics. I actually prefer this to recording 'serious' songs, because I'm less concerned about the results. It's also a nice alternative way to record them as they're growing up.

Finally, I'd recommend getting your little one into Yo Gabba Gabba - their album 'Music is Awesome' is actually pretty listenable to on long journeys - it's got a brilliant song by The Roots on it.

Number 2 is on its way in the next few weeks, so I'll be sharing your pain again!

Thanks for this - I'm really only interested in Precisions for trades at the moment.

  3. I'm really surprised that he got the sounds near the end of that particular recording without using something else - to my ear, there's a part which really sounds like physical bowing. There's an interesting comment on the YouTube version saying that he 'drops out' towards the end (although I don't think he does), but that's about as much as I can find to suggest that something funny was going on in that particular recording.

However, I'm certainly not a scholar of bass amps/effects, so I'll take your word for it.

Many thanks for the answer, although I'm probably not going to spend $5,000 to get the rig to recreate the sound!

  4. I listened to Weather Report's 8.30 for the first time in around 10 years last weekend on a long journey, and towards the end of Teen Town it sounds Jaco's using a bow - at least I've always assumed it was a bow.

I've not (quickly) been able to find mention of him using a bow elsewhere. Does anyone else know if he used a bow live as a party trick or otherwise what produced the effect (it certainly sounds like a bow 'biting' against strings)?

  5. I think slap/pop works particularly well with funk-based music because it was largely invented by funk players, lends itself to those rhythms and it locks in with the other sections rather than overpowering everything else. It's also difficult to play slap melodically, with a tone and volume that fits in with other types of music. Or rather, it's just simpler and more effective to use other techniques.

I'm surprised double thumbing doesn't get used more widely, in technical metal for instance, as it seems a pretty versatile, fast and melodic technique to me.

It is depressing how many times I've seen bassists warm up at gigs with some rapid slapping and then they can't get through a blues once the gig starts. The most impressive bass players to me are the ones who find the right techique and, more importantly, notes for the music they're playing. I realise this has been repeated ad nauseum on other threads before!

  6. I like the words in BGM that you don't see (very often) in any other context, e.g. 'knurled' and 'chamfered'. I'm still not quite sure what any of it means, despite playing for over twenty years.

I agree that there is rarely any real criticism in the reviews. Commercially, it must be difficult slating equipment - they're not going to get much advertising revenue from the manufacturer afterwards.

The writing and the player interviews could be much much better. They're generally very banal. Bass Player certainly used to have much better writing and good transcriptions - I still go back to the transcriptions they had in a Jaco edition years ago.

  7. I had a Roadie fretless for a number of years, but sold it because there wasn't much call for a fretless in anything I was involved with and the neck felt particularly thin and delicate for my taste (and I have generally had a jazz as my main bass).

It was a really well made and reliable bass though. I would definitely try one before you buy to get a feel for how a Jaydee plays.

  8. I'd put this up for sale a couple of months ago but withdrew it after having second thoughts.

It's a 1997/98 Mexican Active Jazz Deluxe and I have owned it from new.

I've now bought a new bass and this really is surplus to requirements. As mentioned previously, it has been gigged for ten years and so has a few cosmetic blemishes.

I'm looking for £350 or nearest offer and will provide a gig bag - it was also recently restrung with Warwick Black Label strings and I'll also chuck in a spare set of Rotosounds.

I would be happy to ship at buyer's expense, otherwise I'm happy for it to be picked up or I may deliver it myself if you're not too far away.

Will consider trades for a Fender P, plus cash adjustment, necessary.

Please pm me with any queries.

  9. I like two kinds of music - Country and Western.

    Sorry, Adam Clayton joke.

I love lots of Country stuff - as someone (kind of) says above - it's difficult to be interested in 20th century American music and not have some leanings to Country. Lot of interesting links back to folk and interaction with the blues. It's often not the most entertaining thing to play on bass, but if you're backing someone who's doing something good, who cares?

  10. Jam Guitars in Bristol have a new one going for £800 (they're just around the corner from me). Unfortunately they're closing the shop on 11 March - so you'll need to be quick. Link below:
