  1. Have bought three basses (with trades) from BD plus strings and other accessories over the last five years or so. I have tended to visit there with a purchase lined up. Service was completely professional and straightforward. Unique and high quality range of basses compared with other stores in the U.K., as far as I can tell. Wouldn't hesitate recommending them, particularly relative to experience with other musical instrument shops.
  2. I would definitely try before buying when stood up. They are lovely sounding basses, but I've never been able to get on with the balance when standing. The first fret has always felt too 'far away'.
  3. Watched this last night and thought it was extremely sad, particularly with respect to the impact of his deterioration and early death on his family. In my view, the focus was on these aspects rather than his musical impact when he was in his prime. I'm not saying that it's not a good documentary, but it's certainly not an easy watch. I haven't watched the second disc yet, which may have more of his music on it.
  4. Weekend bump and open to offers.
  5. Bump and will throw in a short Comfort Strapp. I've had some enquiries about trades and would consider reissue Custom Shop or AV Precisions (60's) and J's (60's or 70's), with sensible cash adjustment either way. Possibly also Sadowsky J's (Metro or NYC). Otherwise mainly interested in a sale.

I bought the bass earlier in the year and it has only been used for recording or left in the case. In terms of condition, it is essentially immaculate bar a minute amount of surface paint wear on part of the headstock (shown in photo). In practice it is hardly noticeable. Please PM me for more details. Happy to send by courier in the UK at buyer's expense or deliver within 50-100 miles of Bristol. Payment by bank transfer or Paypal. Thanks, Jude
  7. 45 minutes sounds fairly heavy for a bass solo set! Why not transcribe a less well known classical piece if you've got time? I could imagine something like Gershwin's first piano prelude working well on bass - I'm just not good enough to work out how to do it. I think Chromatic Fantasy is a good one - the original Bach score is easily available, although I think Jaco plays it too quickly!
  8. Thanks again for the help on this. It's much easier to play with double left hand taps and, on going back to the music, I was misreading the pattern slightly, which didn't help.
  9. Thanks both. I don't generally mind working out fingerings and positioning from sheet music. Whilst I take the point about an improvement in the availability of bass music, I'm only slightly peeved with this book as he's using several (to me, tricky) techniques at once and I don't think it's always obvious how to play it from the music - and I think ~£18 is enough to pay for properly transcribed music. Classical piano music gives relevant technique, fingering, feeling and dynamic instructions, as well as several pages of notes on interpretation at the front! Stu - your books are a very good example of bass transcriptions, I would be struggling to have a go at this 'modern' stuff without them (I had previously thought electric bass playing starts and ends in the 1970's). Back to the attic!
  10. I post very rarely and mainly about basses, playing or music (my apologies, I realise this is perverse). I've always had helpful replies to questions and have been introduced to lots of great music and playing through recommendations. Turnover of basses has increased markedly since joining Basschat though - there was much less temptation in the alt.bass-guitar days of old.
  11. Thanks - that was quick! I think the transcription's missing a few notes here and there. I saw the online tutorial but I'm loathe to pay for it given that I've bought the music. I'll try what you suggest - it makes a lot sense.
  12. Trying to be a good student of the bass, I'm currently trying to learn some Victor Wooten lines, although I'm not convinced that all of the various clicks and pops are strictly necessary. I bought his book of transcriptions and have had a go at U Can't Hold No Groove. Unfortunately, his transcription doesn't provide directions as to how the various muted notes get played. Having a go at it cold, I've been playing the groups of four muted notes in the main part as a double pop/double thumb. However, based on Youtube clips he appears to play it differently live, and also seems to drop the last note in each group compared with the recorded version (although I might well be wrong on this). Does anyone know the method used on the recorded version? He mentions in the book that it's up to the player to play the notes the way they want to, as long as they play them. However, the entire reason I bought the transcription was that I wanted to learn his technique for playing it. As usual, any help/guidance would be really appreciated - hopefully the description above makes sense if you've learnt it. (Minor rant: I don't know why it's considered acceptable to provide incomplete/'fill in the gaps yourself' transcriptions in contemporary music books - this isn't an improvisation piece.)
  13. This has gone to Bass Direct.
  14. Price lowered to £850 as I'd like to get this sold - please feel free to make me an offer.
