1. Give it time dude. It took me about five months to really click with mine (possibly due to the neck being jazz width and i prefer P necks), but at the moment it's my go-to bass. Infact, i just this week stuck some flats on it and i'm loving it even more.

  2. I could well be wrong here, but i was led to believe that the early versions with the Fender style headstock were made from solid wood, and the later types were plywood, although if you can find one, the LTD 83 version is made from ash.

  3. I had one of these passive EST 96's with the double jazz pickup. Think i paid £14 for it on Ebay as a non runner and used it as sort of a first project to practice soldering and stuff on. Ended up replacing all the electrical bits and fitted a wilkinson soapbar type humbucking pickup. If i remember correctly it was a single volume and two tone controls. Do you have any pics of yours?

    Gone :)
    Cheers dude.

  5.
I guess it depends on how you define tone and I think musicians (especially guitarists & bassists) tend to mean 'sound' rather than 'tone'. I think I have my own sound, in fact it's something I have to fight against in one of my bands as it would be inappropriate. It's mainly comes from playing style and then with different basses & amps the eq alters but the fundamental structure of the note remains intact.

Someone like Chris Squire tends to sound very distinctive & identifiable to me, regardless of what bass he is playing. Even the confusion over Geddy Lee's 4001 & Jazz use on Moving Pictures shows how much people can have a 'sound' independent of the bass. Yet I can easily tell my Wal apart from my Jazz or Rickenbacker when playing through the same gear on the same settings. It's a combination of factors, but I think that when you have a target sound in mind, then you will tweak until you get it, regardless of what you're using.

Especially as the CS is virtually identical to the V63.
I think you're right here in that i'm confusing tone with sound. The point i was trying to make in the op was did the original musician really have to chase their sound, and spend hours trying different bass/amp/pedal combinations to get it exactly how they envisioned it, or was it just the sound that came out of the equipment they were using at the time and it was a case of "yup. that'll do".

  6.
I remember back when I got BGM, James LoMenzo put in a full diagram of his horrendously complicated live rig etc, some of them are proud of it. I'm sure various guys, especially now, really try hard to get a great tone (I'm thinking Tool here), but IMO it even begins with what bass you get, and what the electronics are. I'm sure some albums are done bass -> straight into desk.

Man I cannot take my eyes off your avatar, who is she?
Google Chuck Sarah Walker :)

  7. Just been listening to Walk On By by The Stranglers and started thinking to myself, like i often do when listening to stuff, how did he get that tone? Then started wondering whether bass players had always strived to get their perfect sound, or was just a case of plug in your bass to whatever's available, bugger around with the pedal and amp settings for thirty seconds and that'll do, leaving future generations of bass players marvelling at their skill and spending hundreds of pounds trying to recreate that sound. Any thoughts?

  8.
Chris played the intro, but the verses were played by Matt Bellamy i'm "pretty" sure!

Also just remembered! Wrathchild by Iron Maiden! Wicked intro!
Good shout on Wrathchild, love this bit from flight666 when they're soundchecking it. Steve and Nicko just sound awesome.

Also love Newsted's intro to My Friend of Misery by Metallica

  9.
Thanks chaps.

I got the pickguard from: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/guitars_electric...:MEFSX:SELLERID
Thanks for that, this was the one i was looking at getting, just waiting for the template to arrive.

  10. Nice work fella. This is how my affinity is going to look (hopefully) except with the lefty neck. May i ask where you got the pickguard from, as that's all i really need to get now.

  11.
They're not quite as common, but I recommend the EHX Neo Clone. Mine cost me about £50 brand new, nice and simple to use (just a knob to adjust the rate, and a switch to make the effect more obvious). Very nice sound, small so perfect for pedalboards, and true bypass! :)
+1 to this, great little chorus pedal.

  12.
Here's what I normally do.Take the pickguard, and cover it with good sticky backed plastic.Seriously!I know it sounds a bit Blue Peter, but if you get some hobby type stuff,it turns out OK.Trimmed round the edges with a very sharp blade, and a bit of care taken it can look quite good.Plus,it's removable, should you fancy a change.Plus times 2,there is a vast range of finishes to choose from.Just make sure the pickguard is spotlessly clean and de-greased before you start.
PS,you see the pickguard on my avatar pic?Used to be white.
Had a look online, loads of different finishes, just none that seem to suit what i'm after. Good idea though.

  13. Finally got this one on the go again thanks to another impulsive Ebay purchase. Got myself a Squier Affinity in metallic red to use as a donor body. I figured that as i really like the colour, it would save me going to the trouble of re-spraying something else.
Anyway, stripped it down on Thursday, then gave the lefty Encore neck a good going over with the sander to remove the horrible gloss finish and the headstock decal. Neck is now smooth as silk and awaiting a few coats of Danish oil.
Gave the neck a test fitting into the body and found the neck pocket was slightly oversized. A quick look around the house and i found clear plastic box with some Xmas cards in which was just begging to be cut up and used in a bass build. Five minutes with the siccors and i had myself a couple of plastic shims and a tight fitting neck. Result.
Next job will be to fill the old screw holes in the neck, though not sure what to use as the smallest sized stuff i could find in Homebase today was 6mm, Any suggestions?
Spec wise, i'm going for Gotoh hardware (GB2 tuners and a 201 bridge), and hopefully, if i can find one, a Duncan Designed pickup, similer to the one i have on my VM Jaguar.
That's all for now folks, and here's a couple of obligatory pics.
    Rob
