1.
Hi all,
The band I'm in are looking to do "The Riverboat Song" by Ocean Colour Scene at some point, which led me to digging out my copy of "Moseley Shoals".

Damon Minchella's bass playing on that album is really tasteful, & I really like the tone he gets from his Fender Jazz & (I think) a Gibson EB3.

    Anyone else here rate him?

    Cheers,

This is the song im getting about learning now. Cant omment on other songs, because i havent heard many others, but i like his playing on this song!!

As Christmas is very nearly here, I thought I'd share a solo version of O Holy Night (played on my 4 string Squier VMJ). You can stream/download it at http://alunvaughan.bandcamp.com

    Merry Christmas all!

I liked it, not my type of music really, but i watched it all the way through and enjoyed it, and enjoyed the video, and enjoyed the playing. Nothing negative to say! Sounds/looks good to me bro. And im sure if thats your kinda taste in music youd love it even more!

It has a Jazz neck, J Pup at the bridge and P Pups at the neck, which you can sweep between to chose your tone. Active 3EQ. Can get them pretty cheap too. I just sold one recently and im regretting it. Great bass, and so so versatile! Maybe an option for you?

  5.
Also does a tribute have to look like the band in question? It's always struck me as being a bit sad, trying to ACTUALLY look like a famous artist...

Any thoughts? My current covers band is heading in a direction I don't particularly like.
Id say you dont have to look exactly the same, but you should try and make an effort to resemble him. If its the way you stand or the clothes you wear etc. I went to watch an AC/DC tribute act called something like Thunderstruck, everyone looked great, even though their "Angus" was a 6ft 3, 18 odd stone black dude. Because he dressed in what youd expect to see Angus in, and his playing style/stance was bang on, it didnt matter he looked nothing like Angus (physically), and went down great. So id say its not everything, but if you can do something that will remind people who your meant to be, all the better :)

  6.
Here is my (well, soon to be my) Chris Larkin custom that my girlfriend had built for me for christmas.

  7.
FuNkShUi Trust me i'm keeping it simple it's the only way i've any hope of learning it! I'm seriously thinking of sticking a cheat sheet with the chords on it to the side of the amp just incase i totally forget any of the songs! :)
Do it. Whos gonna complain about you having a sheet with the chords on? ? Would have to be a sad person who feels it spoils the night if any of the musicians are "cheating" IMO anyway! Youll be surprised how quickly youll stop needing them. Have faith

  8. If anyone is in two minds whether or not to have lessons in general, id say go for it. I have lessons from Jon. Improved my playing no end, and bucked up my motivation levels. All round tidy guy too. Oh, and he can play a bit aswell!!!! :)

  9. A few easy songs my covers band play are :
    * Stereophonics - Local boy.....
    * Temper track - sweet disposition
    * White stripes - seven nation army (this is really easy and really recognisable so will stand a good chance to get yourself a cheer :) )

Like the gents before me have said, just stick to the chords at first, and these songs are pretty simple. Not a lot of parts to learn in any of them. When you get better you can start adding your own litte touches of genius

  10. Ive got the Boss Ce-2b. Its ok. When i got it i didnt really know what to expect, but i was underwhelmed to be honest. There just didnt seem to be a massive difference when the pedal was on, to when it was off IMO. I still use it, but i would like to have something a little more noticeable, so may be loking to change it soon.

  11.
Yeah I really like the song, listened to it several times... I'll check out the others this eve!

thats cool. When you get a chance to have a listen and let me know what you think. Any advice/help is always much appreciated as we are about to record again soon :)

  12.
There seems to be 2 schools of thought here, one for low action and one for setting it higher.

Is it dependant on the bass/string set up? or is this a generic stance?
The first question i asked when i started going to lessons was "how should i set up my bass for slap". My tutors reply was "how do you want to set up your bass"
i think what he was trying to get at is you set it up how it feels comfortable for you. There is no right or wrong way. Have a play about, try different things. Personally i dont like roundwounds for slap. Takes away some of the "zing" IMO. I have a relatively low action and use D'addario. 45-105 gauge i think. Thats what i had for the EP i recorded (website below) and it works for me. The song called Funk Shui has a slap line
