  1. In the late 70s I used a WEM Westminster 15w Bass combo. Louder than you'd think. I then moved on to an HH 100VS bass head and home brew 1x18 cab. Slightly louder farty woof tone.

At the music shop I worked in at the time Acoustic and Ampeg were considered the ones to aspire to.

Unless you are playing popular covers, or as an originals band have at least an album's worth of well known material, or have a wildly entertain stage show, 45 minutes is too long.

I used to really enjoy 30 minute sets. You can go full steam ahead. Cut the chat and hopefully have left people wanting more.

A 12-bar blues pattern in A from the Jim Gregory / Harvey Vinson bass book, played on an unplugged Commodore semi-acoustic in 1975

That's the book I mentioned on another thread. That cover's bought back some memories.Got it with my Avon EB0 from Rose Morris. Plugged into a Radiogram that was butchered to make an amp.Dreadful all around. Youth of today. Never had it so good, etc.

  4. I've got a Korean Strat from the late 80s that I use for songwriting. It's been well loved/abused. Lovely neck and a nice player. Our guitarist had a '51' that he gigged for a bit. It was miles better than a £130 guitar had a right to be. I tried a nearly new CV Precision recently  and it was OK. Nothing really good or bad about it. Perfectly gig worthy.

Worth looking at Amazon (global store) whatever you decide.  DR strings are much cheaper coming from the US and you get reimbursed the import fees.  Normally delivered within the week also.

Indeed. I've just bought a couple of sets of Black Beauties from Amazon at £23 a pop all in and delivered within a week as you said.

  6. As an aside. I do find it funny when a well used instrument is devalued and not seen as desirable because someone put a badass bridge on it or changed a volume pot 35 years ago. They add to the character for me. For instance. That 3 pickup EB0 in the for sale section is so much interesting as a possible purchase than an all original one that I would barely give a second glance.

  7. Hey Joe. It was on a flexi disc with a no bass (or vocals?) backing track. It came with some 'teach yourself bass guitar' book I had. Also had Sunshine of Your Love and a 12 bore blues in A.

Probably the only covers I could play at the drop of a hat even now.

This is a very useful post.  Love the video.

I'm currently under pressure from my band leader to play certain songs with a pick ("I'm not going to tell you how to play your bass, mate", then proceeds to tell me how to play my bass...)

Anyway, I have played a little with a pick before, so "no problem", I think.  Only he insists that my alternate up and down strokes are very, very wrong, and that everything should be played on a down stroke.  Now, maybe I've misunderstood him, but it seems whether it's down strokes only or alternate up and down is down to the song and the sound required?

Looks like more practice required on my part...

Play with your back to him. He'll never know the difference. I had exactly the same thing asked of me in the distance past and he couldn't tell without looking.

As an aside I've always been a plectrum monkey. I use Clayton 1.07 big triangles. I've never dropped one either.

I can understand some wear above the lowest string cos that's where your fingers would fall to after plucking   but under normal playing circumstances, how would the area between the G string and the edge get so badly worn?

Slapping whilst wearing a chain mail glove.
