  1. What rock n roll was is probably dead. I would say the outrage and rebellion has all been done so it'll never be that edgy thrill ride again. After GG Allin where are you going to go?

I think of it as akin to folk music now, Instruments that have barely changed in 3 quarters of a century in traditional line ups reworking and paying homage to the old stuff. Still some damn fine new bands and songs coming out. If it's good to listen to it's just good music.

Is this a 'Sue Ryder bass' for our times?

How many people here remember the brief but entertaining Sue Ryder feeding frenzy?

    :search:

Oh yes. Charidee and Scrabble letter basses. Helium filled cabs, etc.

Maybe there should be a Hot or Not thread?

    Who’s gonna be Glenda Slag?*

  3. 10 or so years ago. Singer/guitarist gets us booked to do a pub gig even though we're an originals band. Fair enough we have enough stuff for two sets and it's sort of unchallenging classic rock americana territory and we have a PA so we accept. Turns out it's the local bikers and dealing pub.

I'm partially hidden behind a pillar for the whole night on a 'stage' that's raised about six inches of the floor. There's open dealing and using in the loos. The clientele are half off their faces and half looking very stabby. Meanwhile singer/ guitarist is oblivious due to having a couple of Morrocan Woodbines pre-gig around the back with a random and throwing down pints. A worse for the wear woman pulls up a barstool about 2 feet from where I'm stuck playing and shouts "Play some Eagles. Do you know any Eagles?" repeatedly for the last 20 minutes of the first set. As the break is announced She shouts it again. I respond "I don't know any eagles but my aunty's got a budgie'

We have a pint on stage as it's too intimidating to mix out front apart from singer who is out back getting his smoke on again. An enormous bloke with with hands like shovels full of sovereign rings in a black polo neck sporting a large gold chain and looking like Big Vern from Viz approaches and tells me "Don't take the p*** out of my wife (she of the Eagles fandom) I'll be watching you". He proceeds to stare at me as he's stood behind his wife on the bar stool without ever having a facial expression change for the whole of set 2. Singer guitarist is slowly losing cohesion and fluffing words and playing even sloppier than usual. Stands up on his amp near the end arms outstretched and proclaims himself to be the messiah of rock n roll. Falls off toppling amp and sits out next song where guitar two fills in and sings. Gets back for a wobbly last song although he's now very out of tune vocally and guitar wise. We ask the pub if we can pick the PA up in the morning so we don't disturb his trade. In reality so we can get away as quickly as possible. He agrees and we manage to leg it unscscathed when a scuffle breaks out at the other end of the pub which also luckily distracts Big Vern.

I'm driving and dropping all but the drummer home. Singer pipes up saying what a fantastic gig it was. We ignore him as it must be some good weed.

Next day we at least manage to pick up the PA and get paid without too much trouble.

On the Monday we have a rehearsal and S/G tells us he rang the landlord and we now have a monthly residency.....When we all looked shocked and politely decline it leads to the end of the band. Well the band with him in it anyway.

Holy Hannah!! How difficult can it be to pin down 4 people to rehearse?!?!

It's a given that no money will be involved, and that everyone has different schedules, but this is meant to be fun, right?!?! 😆

And when you do finally get them all together.....

I'm so jaded by it I've taken up resting between bands for the last couple of years..

  5. I've got an Eastwood Stormbird/non reverse Thunderbird thing. Very giggable. Lovely blue metallic finish.

I think you're better off going for something that looks cool and retro but can stand using generic parts off the shelf.

I'd go for something like a Ned Callan Cody myself. Can't find a better pic than this. £155.00 would be good too.

  6. Nearly all the gigs I've ever done have been 2/3/4 band bills. I've always watched the other bands. As Lozz says. It's rude not too. I always get something from it. Even if they're sometimes terrible you can at least see/hear how it's not supposed to be done. A lot of times I've been pleasantly surprised and enjoyed bands I never thought I would.

  7. It's a tricky thing coming up with a name that fits the band and is memorable.

The Jetsonics came about as I was throwing a list of noise and speed words together and I liked the sound of it.
It's also the name of a brand of lightbar on the top of US cop cars I found out later.

The current band is called Extender after the name of the compilation of Jetsonics EP's. I like it as it sounds a bit rude and it's not genre specific.

  8. Had another spin with it last night. In a small room with loud drums. Stuck it through a multi buttoned Eden amp with eveything set flat into a 4x10 1x15 stack.
The compression really sits the bass in the mix nicely and the bite button added a touch of nice grindy clang. I used the chorus for the middle bit of a song where the guitar sits out and it sounded wonderful. Sometimes you only need one knob....
The more I use it the more I seem to get out of it. I do understand it won't work for everybody. But I'm very impressed.
The Octafilter will probably be a one song in a set thing but it's great fun to play with, It'll be a nice challenge to write a song around using it.

  9. A drummer I know was in a reasonably well known band in the late 70s. Let's call him Mr X He spotted an advert in Melody Maker. "Drummer wanted for new band. Influences X.Y Z and the band Mr X is in. Looking for someone who plays in the style of Mr X"
He hadn't shaved for a bit, wore a hat and dark glasses and went for an audition. He was his amiable self, didn't get recognised and drummed in his style as well as he could. He was told he wasn't really what they were looking for.
It's nearly always about fit and not technique. They might just not have liked his trilby?
As to the OP. Very rude not to get back to someone as soon as possible though.

Being frustrated in a band is not normal.

For those of us that do our homework and only join bands that meet our requirements including material requirements you mitigate that frustration.

You've never been in a band with a drummer or singer then Blue? ;)

I get frustrated in bands quite often because the difficult one is me if I'm honest. Luckily I am working with another awkward sod and we seem to be able to write songs. It would be different if I was joining a band. But when I'm forming one I don't want the ideas compromised.

If I was joining a band like yours Blue I'd do the homework, fit in and be happy. I just get my musical kicks in a different way. Some folks like a water. Some folks like a wine...

I understood the OP in that sometimes bands get carried away with pipe dreams and forget about what's fun. Doesn't mean you don't take it damned seriously but the balance has to be right.

  11. Things change but people still want conformity. The aspiration to fulfill a rock n roll musical career that for the most part does not exist anymore. Certainly it's nigh on impossible if you're over 21 in the dwindling industries eyes.
I was talking to my old songwriting partner from a previous band about what we liked doing most.
It turned out it was writing songs. Recording them. Making videos. Playing with different musicians. Getting asked to play fun gigs.
So we're going to do the first 4 and hopefully it will lead to the last one.
I'm feeling so much more relaxed and enthused about music now I don't have to do the normal band thing and end up frustrated or doing stuff I'm not excited about.

  12. I can only manage football terrace oohs and aaahs with the occasional whoo hoo.
I'm full of admiration for bass players who can sing as well. My voice is dreadful too which doesn't help.
I do try singing harmonies along to the car stereo now as for the project I'm on at the momenty I would like to contribute. The more I do it the more I'm nearly in tune. I'm going to give iot a good go as it does lift a song.
Singing in a different rythym to what I'm playing just floors me. Not to mention times at gigs in the past when the BV's are required and I'm 6 feet away from the mic stand.
