  1. Both are huge influences on my music making, particularly Bob. I do a passable impersonation of Bob's vocals if any Hawkwind tribute bands are looking for a Captain Lockheed... As for Nik , I may have to look for a tiger skin morph suit and get a more extreme haircut.
  2. This season I will mostly be wearing.... As front man for The Dooks (Buzzard County's finest country rock band) I wear a Mack Trucks cap that was carefully reliced to replicate the hat worn by conspiracy theory nut Dale Gribble from the cartoon series King of the Hill. A matching Strickland Propane t shirt and double denim completes the ensemble. I also play in a glam rock band called SOCK... I a have a collection of things , mostly tiger print. The current theme is a nod towards Hawkwind's Bob Calvert and features jodhpurs and flying goggles. If you think I look daft you should see the rest of them...
  3. The sight reading gigs I have done I was offered tab or proper dots, the MD would print the score off , the software allowed for either. I chose dots as I could use the experience to help with sight reading on other ( none string) instruments. Just sounds like he can only read tab and isn't comfortable with dots. If I was teaching I'd buy a cheap practice amp off eBay for my students to use. A ten second look on eBay revealed a new 20w amp £25 delivered plus many others.
  4. I had to resurrect this thread after finding out that Timmy Mallet had just ridden his bicycle past my friends house.
  5. He's gone for the Warman . I'm interested to see how it performs as I use their guitar pickups in some of my builds but have not tried their bass pickups so far Thanks for your help, Dom
  6. Thanks for your help,I will pass it on I did try Maida Vale a while ago and was impressed. I did put one in one of my basses but sold the bass a couple of years later.
  7. Asking for a friend... I recommend an Entwistle PBXN, high output, clean tone and only £30 but ...only available via the manufacturer and sold out. As I've only used these in my own p basses for years I'm a bit out of touch. What's good for less than £100?
  8. On the left what was known as "Dale's" bass. Dale is my on stage altar ego. However since I started using the one on the right it's become "the blue bass" On the Right what was known as " the ace of spades bass" due to it's ace of spades fretboard markers has now become "Dale's bass".
  9. Not necessarily "good" but I think I've become the best version of me. An accidental involvement in country rock taught me to keep it simple and tight leading me to develop a playing style akin to a Johnny Cash/ Lemmy hybrid and becoming sole vocalist developed my voice to a point where I would actually describe myself as a singer. I found my niche.
  10. You play through the first song the auditionee is supposed to have learned and they stand there like a spare part occasionally attempting to strum a token chord and then have the nerve to ask for a chord sheet.
  11. I have nothing of any importance to add to this other than to reiterate the whole learn both bits thing. I've always sung while playing bass , I do play guitar in a band and actually find singing with guitar more difficult, probably just because I'm far less experienced. These days I'm in a tongue in cheek country rock trio and the bass is strictly basic. Fronting the band, singing, playing , remembering 2x45 min sets worth of lyrics is a lot of work for me but I have a great band behind me and I love every minute.
  12. No it's for my country rock singing denim clad altar ego Dale. He can't have too much denim.
  13. I'm juggling three projects at the moment, two guitars and a bass. Today I did some work on the "Double Denim" bass. I glued an old pair of jeans (deemed too tatty for the charity shop to sell, except to me) onto the body and headstock using pva . I then put a double layer of masking tape around the edge and checked that it was level... Then I poured the resin. It's darker than I thought but who knows what it will look like on the finished bass Now we wait....
  14. Sock - glam punk originals, formed in 1990. The name was chosen to be "anti cool" . These days we are occasionally billed as Vince Venus and Sock due to an incident on Britain's got Talent a few years ago. More than happy with either version of the name. The Dooks - country rock with a sense of humour. The band name came from a stage name I was given while depping for another band who do something similar. Took ten seconds to decide on it and we aren't changing it now.
  15. That might well be the solution, I may even ask if they have something too tatty to sell.
  16. I managed to move things on a bit this morning. I got the neck trimmed, routed for binding and headstock face. I'm planning on a matching denim headstock but still working out exactly how to go about it. Headstock clamped into my semi disposable jig that I use to rout it to final thickness and cut the scoop where the fretboard ends I used a round cutter to make the scoop before switching to a flat one for the face. Headstock ready for it's denim covering. The neck trimmed and routed for binding. I'm also working on a flying V/ telecaster hybrid guitar. I love the look of the V but prefer the sound and feel of the tele. This will have telecaster pickups and a bolt on neck but an angled V style headstock.
  17. I've been kept out of the workshop for a while though some of my absence was due to fun stuff like gigging etc. I found time to move the denim bass on a bit further. I'm trying cherry wood for the fretboard, it's not reclaimed but I've kept it for years because it might come in handy one day! It should look good against the denim finish. The neck blank is 100 year old mahogany from an old piano. The bamboo peg is to stop the board moving when its clamped to the neck. There is a similar one hidden in the nut slot Clamped. Now I have to agonize over which pair of jeans I'm going to cut up.
  18. I ordered two sets from different UK suppliers last Saturday, neither set had turned up yet.
  19. Ask and you shall receive... taken the morning after.
  20. I sanded the tips off the first two fingers on my right hand a week before a gig (Friday) . The band had nit played live since 2019 and we'd already had to cancel it once. Even covering my fingers with plasters it hurt too much to hold a pic (I'm on guitar and sax) until Thursday night and playing the sax made me bleed. I didn't tell the band until Friday night rehearsal figuring that the worst case scenario I'm Bez on maracas. In the end it was a great gig, I was able to play ok, it would have been better without having an argument with an industrial sander but hey ho you live and learn. I have pics if you really want to see what my fingers looked like.
  21. Having now watched the video I'd say it was completely pointless, however it did make me laugh so not entirely pointless.
  22. As I understand it, he's taken a $79 guitar and added $50 to the price because he's butchered the frets? While I haven't had the privilege of trying this innovation but I have seen a Glarry guitar up close and I can't say I was impressed.
  23. Thanks! In a way the script (yes we had one, two pages of script!!!) Wrote itself , it's just the song visualized. We were supposed to film it two weeks earlier but had to cancel, as it turned out we got much better weather and had more time to plan all the scenes and shots. We filmed the fight scene first at 9.30 on a Sunday morning, the cast insisted on opening the beers.
  24. Great work, great visuals and yes the Adamson vibe is great too🙂 We also made a video recently and as (hopefully) you've started a trend I'll share it here... The band is a tongue in cheek country rock trio, the song is about cousin Billy Bob and his fancy new girlfriend. We recorded it in the studio at the shop where I used to work, no idea what system he used but it's essentially the three of us playing live to a click, vocals and guitar solo added after. The video was filmed and edited by my partners son who's a pro editor and up and coming comedy writer/performer. He was a perfect fit for the project, he completely got what we were about. We had to cancel the first days shooting (COVID) but that gave us more time to hone the script and sets etc. We had perfect weather for November in Dorset. The bass used in the video was alo used on the song , it's a semi hollow precision built by myself.
  25. I play with a pick but that's probably going to look worse😀
