1. Excuse this topic if I've just gone temporarily mental with a level exam stress but after a sleepless night last night I think I need to talk to some kidnered spirits about this particular aspect of the beloved baritone world of the bass guitar. First of all, I have very little money.. as I'm a student, all of this does however change next year when I go on my gap year (well, I say 'go' by 'go I mean stick around and get a job... and I've been offered one with a very nice sallary for minimal work so all is veryy good) and I was just wondering how many of us have actually FULLY succumbed to G.A.S and just leapt in and bought our dream instrument perhaps before we've 'earned' it? (I'm not sure I put any stock in the concept of 'I'm not good enough to play this/that yet) I really really love the two basses I have at the moment, a Korean Fender Jazz Bass 24 and a Musicman SUB but I just can't help but feel they're not as authentic as they could be... I mean when I play the jazz I feel like I long for an american and when I play the SUB I feel like I long for a stingray.. But the one thing I've longed for a very very very long time is a Warwick Corvette, after having played a friends around a year ago I simply fell in love with their looks, feel, tough... just everything about them sends me giddy; I've even bought fellow bass players many a pint simply because they own one and I've wanted to twist their ear off about one!! But I digress, My big problem is do I spend the £1200 on my dream 5 string neck through corvette $$ (which I've heard in real life and literally went to an auraul heaven) or do I save my money for more sensible things like living through uni? As I'm not the best at saving anyway I think that if I did invest the money in the corvette then at least it would some real value rather than just buying useless things that wouldn't. I think I'm really seeking some sort of justification for longing for this neck-through unicorn that I so badly want to capture, but maybe if I were to get it then it would cease to be as amazing? If anyone could add simmilar stories or instances or advice I would be eternally greatful!! Many thanks! Tyler.
2. I did this with my current band a while back, we were all students so we literally had more or less no money at all to put in... I mean I think the best actual mixer you can get hold for very cheap is the Alesis Firewire multimix 8 And it comes with cubase LE which is cracking DAW to get you started recording! http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/alesis...-firewire/69218 I know that seems like alot more than some of the usb mixers but you can multitrack out of the firewire stuff straight out of the box which is a godsend! I'd then couple that with the cheapest pair of active studio monitors, I think that these are really important for mixing down as they're gonna give you a flat response, if you mix on regular speakers (even higher end ones) it almost always sounds strange when played back on a normal stereo (speaking from my own mistakes there..) Again Alesis make a set for about £130, well worth it. I'd try and scrounge all the mics I could rather than buying my own... I mean if more than one of you sings chances are you have an SM58 or two knocking around, as far as guerrilla recording goes they're gold for like snares and they dont do a bad job on a bass drum if you fancy a punchy tight sound! A decent large diaphragm condenser for vocals and whathaveyou is another good investment, the Rhode NT is excellent value for money there and you're basically getting a more or less professional grade mic and when placed far enough away it can double as not a bad drum overhead! Just watch it if your drummers really loud... I think the key thing is utilising what you already own to its maximum advantage, I.e which one you has the best computer then make that the one to record through and whatnot... Scrounging is always useful! And as for miking techniques and the like, google is a best friend when doing it all on the cheap! I think with minimal expense you can get some cracking results, the key is just to experiment! (and I think thomann has those mixing desks alot cheaper than that)
3. Dude, as a music tech student/proper geek I would seriously stay away from usb based mixers.. Not saying that they're bad because there are some fine usb interfaces out there but because of the nature of how usb handles data transfering it means that you're unable to multitrack anything beyond a main stereo bus straight out of the mixer. For a few more quid Alesis do a firewire multimix series which are fantastic and I mean even if you dont have a firewire port on your pc a PCI interface should only set you back like another tenner. I think that in the long run it's easier to spend a little more now and avoid all the multitracking headaches And it comes with cubase LE!
4. Wasn't it Cliff Burton who played on that song? I never thought he used anything other than an old morley wah and a russian big muff?
5. I probablly do have a bad one, the whole thing blew on me after a gig last year and I sent it away to be repaired.. After charging me twenty quid for shipping whilst it was still in warranty they sent it back and it's felt a bit strange ever since, still hopefully I'm moving up to Hartke stuff next month! woohooo!
6. Cheers alot guys! I think I'm officially sold now, I read that Jaco used Hartke if that's true I'm seriously seriously sold! after reading Rich's post I'm deffinately gonna settle on just the hartke 4x10XL although I'm kinda worried about the weight now... Still I'm driving soon and plan on getting an Escort Estate, reckon it'd take the weight?? But yeah poor man's Ampeg here I come! Peted, your cab is a proper monster! I'd love to hear what that sounds like =) I do reckon they make some of the coolest looking cabs and hell Stu Hamm endorses them, so yeah can't wait to join you in the Hartke rigs! Cheeers alot guys!
7. At the practise rooms I use they have the 'alu' speaker type cabs, the 4x10 ones and I don't think they're too bad at all to be fair. I was pretty impressed with the sound and they held up really well even though the behringer head that it was paired up with had a faulty ac adapter and kept blowing the power to the whole building every few minutes which leads me to believe that they must be built with at least some competence! In my own experience though everything that I've owned or that the college I go to has owned that's been Behringer has broken after about a year I myself have gone through 6 of their tuning pedals... which might seem ridiculous but the shop I bought the original from kept replacing them for free lol I've also destroyed one their usb mixers by simply turning off the phantom power and seen a friend do the same to the model without the usb adapter, their large diaphragm condenser seems to disentegrate under any kind of heavy SPL rendering it useless for all but acoustic instruments.. Whilst I'm staying away from the company because of this, I've heard others give glowing reports so I guess that stew's right when he said that it 's a lottery... I guess our numbers all have to come up eventually =) (god, that was cheesy)
8. As a long time arachnophobic... Those taratunlas actually look really sweet! Must be the fur I guess lol. What 6'er do you have?
9. Howdy! I'm looking to upgrade my crappy combo (Laney r5) to a decent Head & Cab deal.... but being a pennyless student, I'm looking the lovely looking G&K's, SWR, Markbass and Eden rigs are sooooo far out of my price range! I've heard alot of decent things about Hartke stuff and many people have said that you do end up getting alot of 'bang for your buck' so to speak =) Just wondering if there was any truth in that statement? If anyone's got/had/played through one of these at any points then I'd seriously appreciate some feedback on 'em. I was thinking about pairing it up with a Hartke 4.5XL 4x10 and then maybe adding a 1x15 on for the bigger gigs? (If we ever get any decent ones lol...) I'd love to know what those cabs are like to use so once again if anyone could enlighten me I'd be much obliged I've trawled through the harmony central reviews but I just find them to be so conflicting, I'd much rather get some proper wisdom of this here forum and it's members =) Cheeeeeers in advance! Ty
10. Hi everyone, Thought it was about time I signed up to this board as I was a former member of BW and have been a long time reader of this, lol I hate being a forum lurker! Hope everyone's still doing okay and It's been great to read about the awesome gear and hear some epic playing on peoples mypace's that they've posted through here, there are some DAMN fine bass players around and it'd appear they're all on this board! So yeah, big thanks to everyone who's posted bits and bobs about their gear or playing ( I guess thats the whole forum then..) as it's been a constant inspiration to a newbie like myself. I've been playing around eighteen months now and have just started lessons, which are looking like they've been an awesome investment so far! I've got a Fender Jazz bass 24, a black Musicman SUB which I've just bought and LOVE. and I play out of a crappy toneless Laney R5 combo.. which I fully loathe. Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully I'll chat to you all on the various threads and whatnot! Tyler x
