Hi all, after about a year of more-or-less retirement from playing bass I've decided to get back into it good and proper, due to needing to eat and other such financial dire straits I've sold of alot of the gear I previously owned (namely a Mesa Walkabout Scout, lots of pedals and a Musicman SUB) but I'm left with two basses I'm very fond of (fender jazz and a warwick streamer std) and have recently unearthed my very first and very rubbish bass amp.... a Laney R5! I played it through for around three hours a few days ago and when I next went to turn it on ( I live in student accommodation so frequently play unamplified) there was just nothing, the light seemed to flicker for a second and then die and now it simply won't turn on! Without sounding like the most general annoying request ever, does anyone have any ideas? I've got a soldering iron and plenty of spare caps, resistors and whatnot lying around on my course if anything needs replacing, anyone had such simmilar things happen before? Any suggestions at all would be most welcome. I know the amp's a bit rubbish but anything'd be cool at the moment! Hope everyone's having a great new year. Thanks for reading.

I say, if it's making you happy... then it's NEVER possible to have too many! Surely we all work too hard in jobs we either tolerate or dislike, isn't life about the moments when we can devote time and attention to our art and the tools thereof! The basses in your collection (and in previous collections) sound utterly stunning and I hope you're happy with the many more you pick up along the way! I am alas only on my 4th bass as I'm a poor student but I've loved them all and wish I still had some... I went from a cheap Westfield Jazz bass copy (which was dire.. but 1st bass and all the rest!) to a Fender Jazz 24 in Cherryburst (which I still have and love!) then ended up with a Musicman SUB which is my greatest regret that I sold and finally I have a Warwick Streamer STD which is a dream come true! It's all played out of a Mesa Walkabout Scout which is my favourite piece of gear I've ever owned but is having to leave my grasp soon as I'm in dire straits! here's to MORE ridiculous basses on all our behalfs!

Although it has made me realise that I only like a tiny but of distortion once in a while and even then I would probablly never use that in a band situation. I just tend to use it for the tuner and rubbish looper thing.... it's just made me want to get a real looper though, shame about their prices! I think once I'm settled in uni (after sept.) I'll sell it on and pick up a tuner, compressor and looper when I've got the cash =)

Hi there, I currently own a Boss GT6B and play it straight into a Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout (as in I go directly out the output of the pedal into the normal guitar input of the amp) and have noticed that when I play with the pedal as opposed to without out, I lose alot of my tone from the amp. From my understanding the Boss is supposed to be true bypass so this shouldn't happen? Am I just going mad? Furthermore, should I be plugging the Boss into the FX loop of the amp, I'm really unsure as to what an FX loop actually is, if anyone could inform me on this... it would be greatly appreciated. I also wish to purchase an Alesis drum machine which I understand has two phono outputs on it, is there anyway I could run this into my amp so that I could play along with it? Once again I Apologise for my tremendous technical ignorance and really appreciate any replies to this. Thanks all!

I have seen more than one of these floating around in the music shops over here (Cologne, Germany) but I'm sure they are quite rare and not sure how difficult it would be to order from them. On a side note, I really don't understand the appeal of these things as I've just found them the heaviest and uncomfortable basses that I've ever worn... The sound also seems a bit one-trick-pony but maybe thats part of the charm? [on another side note, swear I saw one in Denmark St last time I was there.... although surely nothings worth the hassle of going to that dreaded place?)

Just adding to all the Mesa love in here but isn't it cool how crazily responsive the eq controls are?? Like on my old laney there was less difference in a whole revolution of the 'bass' knob than there is in a tiny increment on the mesa. Also, I have the 40hm one and read in the manual they will run at 2ohms with a cab? In order to do this would I need to add another 4 or 8ohm cab? Cheers guys! Incidentally anyone know if the Mpulse is a much different type of sound?

Just a quick note to say, I bought the amp today! I'm now the proud owner of my own Scout! Damn it's good! I haven't used many different amps and such before but this is easily the best tone I've ever heard! Thanks for all the advice guys, I couldn't be more pleased!

Thanks guys! That's been really informative. I rarely play to more than a hundred people (biggest gig I've ever done was barely over 200, so I'm VERY small-fry compared to some guys on here!) There's generally always been PA support, I love the idea of the removable head as I do a lot of recording the idea of using it as a high-quality studio preamp just sounds so good! How does it fare against most drummers? PS: its a newer model and its new

Hi all. Just about to take the plunge on paying just over a grand on a new Mesa/boogie Walkabout scout (12" 4ohm version) and whilst I'm 98% sure I'm doing the right thing, I'd just be interested in anyone elses learned opinion on the forum? As I'm off to a music course in at uni in September I felt that my current combo (a Laney R5) wasnt really cutting it tonally or voume wise at recent gigs and so felt the need to upgrade. Various devouring of the amps and cabs forums here has lead to me to the opinion that as far as lightweight great sounding combos go, the mesa is pretty good. Am I doing the right thing? I'd love to hear what people reckon to their own or if they've played them and what their like with the head on their own, hooked up to various cabs or just on their lonesome? Thanks everyone. (Just out of interest I play mostly fingerstyle funk, jazz and some rocky stuff with a Warwick Streamer STD and a Jazz Bass 24)

Just to clarify things, Im actually swapping my SUB as its something I don't really like that much.. I don't think I'm missing out on more than say thirty quid and I do really like the Streamer STD (The LX's look fantastic but I would rather go with the passive soapbars... just to have something very different to my J bass) is it possible to fit a two piece warwick bridge afterwards to a standard streamer? do they have many advantages over the toploading thing? Hey everyone! I'm currently in the process of exchanging a Musicman Sub for a Warwick Streamer STD... As it goes I was never really into the sub, it just never felt right with me so I've wanted to change basses for a while. I've always dreamed of owning a real Warwick but have heard a mixed bag of things about the Streamers. I was just after picking the collective brain of all the BCers and asking for all the Warwick opinions (especially any regarding streamers) that this thread can handle! Please, tell me all... the good, the bad and the ugly! (I played the Streamer for the first time tonight and utterly fell in love, its the nicest looking bass I've ever seen and the sound of it was unreal... a subtle growl! beautiful) Have I made the right choice?

I've recently been to a big guitar store where I'm currently staying (Cologne in Germany) and I really can't believe the place is even real... They have the largest bass stock I've ever seen with my own eyes, including vintage/new/custom shop Fenders, lots Warwicks, Spectors, Musicmans, Ibanez and beautiful customs from all around Europe. The shop also has a cafe in the middle of the guitars that encourages people to sit around and jam whilst eating and drinking. My first visit there I was met by the head of the Bass department who asked me enthusiastically what I played and what I was into (in perfect English) then lead me into one of their three bass amp rooms and said the most perfect phrase I've ever heard in a music store 'If you wait here with a coffee, I'll bring you some things you'll like' EVEN after I'd explained I had no intention of buying, his response was simply 'ah but if you see something you like then maybe you'll find it somewhere else when you do want to buy' He brought me loads of local built customs and even a MTD 5 string and let me play through a beautiful Glockenlang amp which sounded perfect, I thought I was in a dream, best time EVER.

I shelled out for both versions and have been so impressed, as was my guitarist; having recorded several of the actual amps modelled before I honestly believe these models can sit much better in a mix and whilst not completley transparent to the trained ear, the difference is surely negligable. The ampeg portaflex model is unreal and I've recently used it on a funk song with an old Jazz bass, smokin' hot tones =)

Hi all, I've recently been going through a weird time with my playing in band situations lately, I've been playing for about two and a half years and have taken lessons for around the last six months (and thoroughly enjoying them!) and have learnt all the theory I've been taught and tried my best to apply it to my playing. The first band I was in I could barely play at all so just rooted 8ths at a steady rhythm was enough of a challenge! I then joined a more straight up rock band with two guitars and found myself playing anything I could to be heard above the racket that those two were busy making =D The band I find myself in currently is far more laid back with a female lead singer with a very soul voice and a single guitar and drummer... during the last practice I found myself torn between playing some more complicated runs and so on or simply trying to find a good simple groove and supporting the song. Every time I found myself doing a difficult run I felt insincere and as if I was showboating akin to the 'every song must have six solos' guitarists that plague music. Yet every time I simplified to just grooving along I felt like there was so much more I could be doing... I know theres some real seasoned pro's on here whos playing I really admire and I'd be really curious to here about what you guys think to overplaying parts? Is it a matter of 'whats best for the song' and how does one decide this, as 'best' becomes very subjective as I'd gladly listen to a great bassist in a rubbish band when Im sure average-joe-gig-goer wouldn't. So is it better to stick to the groove or to get a bit more complex, what do you reckon? Peace. Tyler

Hi all. I've been the proud owner of one of these for a fair while now, a black one with the active preamp =) And like I've been really astounded with it, loved its hi-fi tone and the bright and snappy sound of it with fresh light guage strings just sounds beyond cool for slap and all the rest =D I think I paid around £570 for mine new from a friends music store, which for an American made bass surely can't be too bad? I was just sort of wondering how different these are from Stingrays? I think they're made of poplar as apposed to (whatever stingrays are made of) but do they use different electronics/pickups? Does anyone else on the forums own one, if so I'd love to hear what you think of them and also whether you think it'd ever be worth upgrading to a normal stingray? (p.s do stingray scratchplates fit as a direct replacement for the metal grate ones supplied with them?) Cheeeeeeeeeers. Ty.

I think honesty is really the best policy when it comes to this sort of thing, but then as was mentioned above 'you're crap' isnt really that much of a positive thing to say. I guess it's like most things, the key is in being assertive and not aggresive; maybe a 'this could be better' rather than 'this is sh*t' approach? I for one have suffered this many times in both my current band and the band I was in previously due to mainly being in bands with friends which I'm beggining to think is a pretty bad idea. Evenin' to the bass-playing world! Just wondering if anyone has one of these? I started getting a mega craving for one after hearing the sound clips and whatnot on their website, and after pricing up several pedals that I was after (and getting to a number wayyyy North of £600! including a pedal-board) it just seemed like this has them all modelled and I've loved the normal bass Pod's that they make (used them a few times in the studio) I was just wondering if anyone has/uses one? And what they reckon to using it live or in the studio (or both??) I seem to remember agesss ago on BW there was a topic or two about them so if anyone could hit me up with some advice it'd be much obliged! =D I've got a zoom b2 at the moment and havent really been bowled over with the quality of the fx (they're not bad though) I was just wondering how much of a step up in quality the line6 is? If I got it (which is looking more and more likely!) It'd be bought out of wages + savings so I'd could afford it without going too hungry! I hope, but yeah i agree with you on the debt thing... I'm not exactly looking forward to getting into loads of it!
