  1. My take on this is that the vast majority of music genres and bands has always been formulaic, it's just the further away from the actual time period you get the more you only remember the actual 10 or so stand out great bands / artists.

I don't think it's any worse now than it's ever been.

The point of difference is really down to personal musical taste.

Update: my ennui with fretless has continued, even to the point where I’m not keen when I hear it on the radio. Who am I and what has the body snatcher does with the original Ezbass? However, my GAS for a double bass or EUB has grown in direct proportion to my flagging fretless desire. Checked out some NS EUBs and dismissed them for sounding too fretless like. However, the Harley Benton, scroll topped EUB sounds more like a DB to me. Currently out of stock, but I will keep checking Thomann for when they come in (proper, affordable double basses are like rocking horse poop in my area).

I would say don't worry about it. It's ok for tastes and preferences to change.

I saw one of those HB EUB's on Facebook marketplace last night. Let me check if it is still there.

    More Than Words, by Extreme.

I'm not really into Extreme, but I always thought that they must be really annoyed that this was the song that defined them, when most of the music is basically shred hair metal...😂

I've got tickets for that gig. I always try to catch Janek when he's playing with either his own band or with Bob Reynolds. You know it's going to hear some high level musicianship.

Bob Reynolds is definitely my favourite sax player right now. He is touring the UK later this year too.

    What a talented young musician..

If my kids could play an instrument to that technical level and show such an understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm etc, I'd be very proud of them for having invested their time and energy into one of the creative arts.

I don't get why anyone would want to knock this guy at all for being a musician who's smart enough to earn a living from it.

IMO, as musicians, need to celebrate what we all do to make the world a better place.

Please let this comment win the day. It's the most sensible comment I have seen in a long time.

I think Mothers Milk still holds up pretty well.

I agree. Sorry, reading back my post it possible didn't convey what I actually feel. I really like RHCP and would go as far as to say BSSM is one of my favourite albums. What I mean is that when I was a teenager Flea was my bass hero and I thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. However as I got older I realised I much prefer other bass players and musicians.

This, without a doubt! Flea isn't a terrible bassist, but his version of the 'national anthem' is a disgrace!

Holy moly that's bad. I think Flea is to bass what Kirk Hammett is to guitar. Anyone who started playing in the 80's and 90's idolised them, and then you get a little older and a little wiser and realise that they aren't that great. (I still love RHCP but whenever I hear Flea play without them it's cringe territory).

His lines are virtually always pre-recorded, produced and then effectively mimed for visual purposes. It does slightly undermine his ability but as a content creator he is great!

I don't have a massive issue with this method in his case. Sure it would be more impressive as a live one take shot, however the playing in the video looks fairly legit, it wouldn't be as clean as the recording but it certainly looks like he is playing what I am hearing.

  9. Is this the edge of human Capability right here on our instrument?

If it was anyone else but him I would be sure it has been sped up...

However having watched enough of his playing I think he may well just be the most technically accomplished bass player on the planet right now.

  10. There just doesn't seem to be the demand just now for smaller artist gigs.

My experience right now is that people are happy to pay £100+ to see the major artists, but unwilling to pay £10 to see local bands.

Just the way of the world just now, people can only afford a night out once in a while so they make it special.

Also I totally understand how you feel, the first gig you get lots of people in, but that very rarely lasts. I always find that with bands, there's only so many times that friends & family will show up, and if you don't get an organic following really quickly the band has a very short life span for effective gigging.

  11. I would also suggest a more modest bass for your first bass, especially when you are looking at a 5 string.

One of the biggest challenges you will face on bass as a guitar player is muting, and the B string makes this even more difficult. Keeping the bass quiet is more difficult than actually playing the notes half the time.

The better the instrument you get the better the pickups will be and more unwanted frequencies and overtones will be picked up. This will help with technique, but it may also stop you from actually playing the instrument.

If you pick up a 2nd hand Yamaha 5 string from one of the more well known active members on this forum, you will be able to sell the bass on in a year's time for roughly the same money should you want to upgrade.

  12. My take on this would be:

If it's for a one off gig, and she is going back to playing Cello then string a bass in 5ths.

If she is going to be playing bass going forward, use standard tunings .

As I'm sure someone mentioned above most classically trained string musicians to Grade 7 will have the musical knowledge to adapt fairly quickly to any stringed instrument. Especially when she won't have to worry about intonation (presuming it's not a Fretless bass)

Feedback on my research so far: GHS Bass Boomers do a 5 string set with a high C. I got one but the tone is a bit guitar like and the high C does not quite match the rest, although its wearing in – I was disappointed. RotoSound do a high C (thanks to Joe D'Silva for this) in their Solo Bass range, so I am going to match this with a Solo Bass 45 – 105 4 string set and see how it sounds. Using a D-Addario 6 string set would give a 100 gauge low E string which seems light to me but may be its not an issue. Is there a 'try before you buy' scheme out there for strings somewhere? Cheers. John.

If you are having this issue, I would try using a 0.32 gauge C string.
