  1. Xotic XJ-1T 5 String Bass in VGC - vintage white colour. 2008 model. I do have the spec sheet which came with the bass as new.

Bought on here a while ago and whilst I had been after one for a while, a new SR5 special has come and I need to recoup some cash, especially given the distinct lack of gigs at the moment!

I have spent quite a bit on this when it came to me, servicing and cleaning, setup and adjustments and now it plays great. Some minor marks and dings (see pics) but overall in VGC. Very versatile 3 band EQ alongside the traditional VVT controls, active / passive switch, plus additional switches which switch frequencies in the lows and mids. I have Loxx straplocks on at the moment which I am happy to leave or replace.

This is the US model, not the Indonesian ProVintage series, this is the full fat version which are £2K+ new. Comes with a gig bag (not the original Xotic one).

Trades - more interested in a lower value bass plus some cash. Looking for around a 1K bass plus a few hundred my way. Jazz basses are of a particular interest, a US 70s RI 5 string or something similar. Must be a 5 string though. Hit me with any ideas. Cash sale is also welcome but prefer collection. Can travel a bit for the right deal. I can look at posting but I might have to source a hard case or send the bass neck off.

    Carl.

  2. Guy took my Sei bass off my hands today - a mutual meet up he came armed with cash and hand sanitiser!

Top bloke all round and a thoroughly easy transaction. I hope it serves you well!

  3. I have always been a Stingray5 fan but have moved away from the sound a bit... the new re-voiced preamp however does appeal.

It is a long shot and I do like the 30th anniv model which is listed for sale... i just love that roasted maple look!

  4. Thanks for the info, the j-retro had two small switches in the circuit which is why John installed the two extra switches in the uni pre.

The original pictures show it with the j-retro and the later ones show it.with the uni pre.

  5. More pics added as requested. Dings are minor and superficial marks in the finish.

The preamp is now the standard uni pre, 3 band eq with passive tone. The switch near the volume is a simple mute (handy for tuning) and the rear is the passive/active switch. This replaced the push pull on the passive tone. These were added to replace the j-retro it came with.

  6. Not sure if I want to do this so i reserve the right to withdraw, priced firm just to get back my outlay (original bass price plus the mono bass sleeve if required. If not - £1500!)
@bubinga5 asked Martin Peterson how much it would cost to build this spec and its a little over £4000. I hope he doesn't mind, I have pinched a lot of text from his original advert.

I am only considering this as I have just got an Xotic jazz and am loving it! Trades wise I would be looking for a special edition Musicman Stingray5 with roasted neck or one of the newer specials with the roasted neck. Something may prick my fancy so please do throw offers at me - 34" scale only please (found this out the hard way!)

It's a great bass and I am really in two minds as to whether I want to sell so I am no rush nor will I trade or sell for something I am unsure of... please don't take offence if I say no!

I am happy to include the Mono case for £1600 or or not for £1500. Delivery is an option but it would have to be fully insured so will be around the £40 mark. I will need to check this and it all depends about case etc. so collection is preferred.

@bubinga5's original pics but I will upload some more ASAP. The body finish has one or two minor dings but nothing to detract from what is a beautiful bass. When I installed the uni-pre I copper shielded the whole cavity and grounded everything so it is as quiet as a mouse.

Give me a shout with any questions / offers for trades. Bear in mind the controls look slightly different now with the uni pre installed - I will add more pics asap.

    Details below:

It's a Sei Jazz bass, a lot of us know how well Martin makes his instruments. Totally hand made.
Swamp ash body, Birdseye maple neck/headstock. The book matched olive wood top has flame and all sorts of burl.
Its a lovely piece of wood, Brazilian Rosewood fb. Matching electronics cover on the back.
The neck dots are surrounded by nickle which is a nice touch, Martin Steamed the Olive wood around the arm rest.
He sunk the bridge into the body by 3mm for better resonance. The detail he puts into his basses are so cool.
I've seen and played others Sei basses and they are mind boggling in there detail.

Brass ABM fully adjustable bridge.16.5 to 18.5 mm I believe, could be 19 mm not sure.
Its the best bridge I've ever had on a bass period. USA HipShot Lollypop tuners.
John East Uni-Pre preamp - 3 band EQ with swept mid and passive switch.
John East made a custom version of this to include two switches - one for passive mode and one as a mute.
This was only to fill the gaps left by a J-Retro which the bass came with.
Bartolini B Axis pickups. The B Axis are a lot more aggressive and brighter than the usual Bartolinis.
Its light weight at 8.9 pounds. The B string is monstrous. Super taught.
For a 34" scale bass its as good as any Lakland 35" ive ever played, really punchy (@bubinga)
Its super comfortable body wise, with a very slim shallow neck.

It sounds like a modern Jazz. The East pre gives it lots of tonal options.
Set right it is a beast of a Jazz Bass. Lots of growl. But passive its quite a polite instrument.

  7. Bit of advice needed... I'm after a spunky jazz in a nice solid colour.and do like the look of the Moollon jazz 5 in copper gold on the classifieds at the moment... Seller is asking £2050 for what looks like an as new bass...y question is what do these go for new? I can't really find any information about new prices and just wondered about used Vs new prices... Any information would be greatly received...

  8. Anyone done it?? Bad experience??

It concerns me in terms of costs on top of the purchase price (import etc.) - anyone know exact costs??

I'm after an Xotic and have seen an as new xjpro vintage for good money... But if it costs me £1k sterling, what outlay am I looking at?

I really want one in a cool colour... I know BD have a burst one, but I really like their surf green one... But that's £2K+...😮

  9. I must admit, surf green does really appeal. I have seen surf green and a tort scratch plate which looks great.

It's such a risk though, with such a pricey instrument. I might have to get creative on Photoshop to visualise it!
