1. I've been thinking of getting a GK head for some time now, and what with the imminent end of the Take It Away scheme I need to get my arse in gear!
I originally intended to go for the 700 RB - classic amp, great tone. But I find myself increasingly drawn to the lightweight MB 500, which recently got a stunning review in BGM.

Are there any GK users out there who can offer a comparison of the two? I am not really in a position to try either out but I have had experience with the 700 in the past - do the two amps make a markedly different noise? The boost facility is important :)

I play a Spector bass, and make very loud, heavy rock/metal.

It's an original 70s Peavey TNT100 bass combo, tatty externally but fully functional and with a lovely sound. I've owned it myself since the seventies and nearly all that time it's sat collecting dust and coffee cup stains in my living room! In the past year though it's been relegated to the shed as I blew out on a lightweight Markbass combo Xmas before last :)

Yours for a measly £70, collected from Northolt (NW London) or could deliver in the vicinity for petrol costs.

And just in case, also for sale (see full ads in other sections):
    Line 6 Echo Park £70; Line 6 Constrictor £60; MXR Distortion+ (original 70s) £50; as new Comfort Strapp w/Schallers £30; EHX Doctor Q Nano £20: Behringer BEQ700 £15; Spector Legend Classic 5 w/ Schallers & 25mm gigbag £350.
Any pics? Apologies if there are some already there but I'm at work and they don't always show up. :)

  3.
Last Saturday at the London Bass Show I bought one of Rotosound clip-on tuners for £5 which I thought was a bargain. However, upon attempting to use it the day after, it was DOA ! Changed the battery - nothing ! It'd light up but no display at all.

Even though it was only £5, and being the ever whinger that I am, I emailed Rotosound. I got a response back the next day (bearing in mind I sent the mail Sunday) and was offered a newer model to replace it at no charge. Picked it up from post office today and it's doing it's job nicely ! Rotosound could have easily asked me to send the faulty one back and they'd ship another, but no questions asked.

Thumbs up to Jason at Rotosound for his swift action ! It's nice to see their Chairman/CEO dealing with customers :).
I once had one of their A strings go dead on me within an hour of fitting. I emailed rotosound, again expecting to have to go through the process of sending the bad string back, etc. Instead I got an extremely apologetic reply from Jason Howe himself, and they sent out a whole new set of strings, no questions asked.

Do this. I was in exactly the same boat as you, I got onto PJ and had a reply within minutes! He wasn't able to supply me with a free one (which I didn't really expect anyway) bu he pointed me in the right direction and I now have a replacement Tonepump on it's way as we speak!

Spector's customer service is truly second to none, they really care about their players.

  5.
I can.

Tell me you can't play a 5 string bass after a year. Then I'll believe you.
The problem might not be that he can't play the 5 string, more that he just doesn't 'connect' with them. I have no problem playing a fiver, but I just can't ever imagine using one in a band situation, so I don't hang on to them too long. I recently had a Spector Euro 5 which was incredible but it just wasn't going to earn it's keep - so I traded it for a Spector 4 string. :)

I have no problem with fivers whatsoever, I just feel at home with a 4. Each to their own and all that!

  6. Me, 8 1/4ins (21cm). My favourite neck shape is that which can be found on the 50s Precision bass, but I also love MusicMan and Spectors. I'm happy to play slimmer necks but after a short while my body rejects them and I get cramp.

  7. I recently bought a Spector Euro 5 because I love Spectors, and it was a great price. I've never really considered myself a 5 string player but I like the idea and though what the hell! Despite being an incredible instrument it sooned became apparent that I had no real use for a 5 string. I advertised on here to trade for a Euro 4 and made a deal within hours!

  8.
There's nothing special about that, just thump a P bass through a distorted amp.
We all know you don't particularly like Fenders, but that is a ridiculous response. I could play a Precision through a distorted Ampeg, followed by a distorted Matamp - two completely different sounds, and neither of which would sound anything like the tone in the clip.

  9. Evening all!

I have recently acquired a rather fantastic Spector Euro 5, circa 2007. Apparently it's something of a custom jobbie, transparent black finish showing the wood grain underneath, and all black hardware. Apart from this it's standard.

It's everything I want from a fiver, including a stunning B string, but sadly I just can't imagine a situation where I would ever need to use it. My basses have to earn their keep so I can't really justify having this one sitting around for occasional home use.

I'm over the moon with the Spector tone however, so ideally I'm looking to trade for it's 4 string equivalent. Ideally I'd like to do a straight trade, so any prospective 4 strings will need to be in as near to new condition as possible - My fiver is in superb condition, I am unable to see any knocks or scratches.

On the other hand, if anyone fancies making an offer to buy the bass outright that's cool with me - £850 inc. OHSC and she's all yours.

Pics to follow when I've got a bit of daylight.

  10. My Dad used to play this all the time when I was young, and he jokingly told me the voice on side 2 was that of the Devil himself. Bloody terrified me.

It's one of my favourite albums now, excellent bass lines abound!

  11.
Does anyone prefer the USA mix?
No way! It made for an interesting comparison but the spiky, brittle mix of the original was utterly perfect.
It's funny but the band themselves have always maintained that the US mix was far closer to how the originally wanted the album to sound.

  12. I've always concluded it was the Rickenbacker, running in stereo. I think the clearest you can hear the tone unaltered by any effects is toward the end of '4st 7Ib', he plays a nice little descending run between verses, sounds too growly to be a Precision.

Incidentally, The Holy Bible is one of my favourite albums ever, and the bass lines and tones are just monstrous.

Sounds pretty damn good. Looks discustingly pretentious IMO

What do you guys think of it?
That's a very extreme reaction to a humble Precision bass...
