The sponge isn't under the G string which is responsible for the trebly parts of the solo.
Ha! Good spot.

Bass solo at 7:13 - it's a bit lower in the mix but to my ears is the same basic sound.
Listening again to the studio recording, I'm certain that isn't the Rickenbacker. Their pickups are in the wrong place to make that sound.
Precision with flats, bit of overdrive, played hard. And, if the live video is anything to go buy, a massive wodge of sponge at the bridge 😁

As for the new mix, on the whole it sounds fantastic but those drums sound very, very odd.

I used to think it was the Rick as it's so different to his usual sound, but I'm pretty certain it's just the Precision with new flats. Just a lot more top end and drive than usual.
If JD was using Roto flats at the time, they're surprisingly trebly and aggressive strings... for about an hour. Think Steve Harris.

LaBella flats 😄
Mind you, Entwistle's later memory was never the most reliable thing so who knows?

Oh man... this is sad news. I bought a Spector from Dave a few years ago - being opposite ends of the country worried me a bit, which I explained to Dave. He gave me his number to have a chat and he offered to send me the bass to see if I liked it before deciding if I wanted to buy it. A 2 grand bass.
Needless to say I bought the bass, but I've never forgotten what a generous and kind gesture that was. Dave was a credit to our community and he will be missed.

On a related note, Shel Talmy, My Generation producer, died this weekend… Surely that was the ultimate bass solo?
And, ironically, played on a Fender Jazz 😆

Some of the limited edition have leaked across the pond! Purple sparkle is already gone, but they've still got blue...
Horribly tempting.

THE WHO BY NUMBERS.
A less than cheerful listen...I read it described as "Townshend's suicide note"... lyrically an uncomfortably raw listen but musically it's probably The Who's prettiest album, conversely.

Indeed it was - but it used the neck from the Slab, hence the distinctive tone on that album.
