1. Bass Brothers and Sisters I keep hearing about our duty to 'lock in with the kick'. What does this mean? Surely its not to try to play on each kick. That's impossible knowing the drummers I play with. Playing quarters under the kick beats is downright dull and they might as well run some keyboard loops and let you go to the bar. I'm thinking its to lock in on the predominant beat in the bar (e.g. the 1 for funk). Is this what they mean? What really p***es me off is when the Guitarist tells you to 'lock in with the kick' .... but then they can't explain what that means. What am I missing? Please enlighten me. Yours Flummoxed of Surrey
2. Ah .... the Granite City in God's own country Welcome to BC Jay
3. Welcome to BC. You've come to the right place if you are starting out. Lots of diamond geezers and geezerettes to help you on your journey. The thing I love about bass is that you can get great enjoyment from it without having to be an accomplished instrumentalist. I've been playing for 20 years and I'm a stunningly average player. I love just playing around three root notes and concentrating on getting the groove right. Suggest you get your funk CDs out and go for it (fewest chord changes of any music I can think of). Keep the faith!
4. Welcome to BC Will I recently started jamming down at the Running Frog in Windsor. Good rehearsal studio. Nice blokes ... a bit pricey though.
5. Enjoy BC Sam Lots of great info and advice here. Hope to acquire a Jazz sometime this year (assuming I can sneak it past the wife!)
6. I have that rig ... ITS THE DOGS ...! Had to put some heavy duty castors on mine to save my spine but deffo worth humping around. Does anyone know if it makes any difference which input you use at the back of the XL cab. I don't see any info. at the back so I just plug into either jack. Can't really tell any difference in sound/tone/power.
7. Bass Brothers and Sisters Absolutely essential that I draw your attention to an upcoming book from Stuart Clayton's Bass Publishing company on the extremely cool and much missed Bernard Edwards. He often came off stage with bleeding fingers due to his playing style. He played with an index finger/thumb plectrum action .... but didn't actually use a plectrum if you see what I mean. Now that's committment to your art. Try it out and see how far you get. Good call Stuart. Come out of the closet all you funkdisco disciples and pay homage to the great man. http://www.basslinepublishing.com/ultimatefunkdisco.htm Al PS “Bernard never changed strings,” says Nile Rodgers. “Bernard was asked, ‘So, what kind of strings do you use?’ He looked at his bass and went, ‘I don’t know; what kind of strings come on a Music Man bass?’”
8. Hey guys Thanks for the welcome Catch you soon Al
9.
Welcome. Letterland. Good call. "When 2 vowels go out walking, the first one does the talking".
Yeah Good Stuff old Letterland. When my daughter was 4 she reckoned I looked like hairyhatman ... so it stuck!
10. Hellooooo Bass Brothers and Sisters I've been kicking around BC for a while so about time I said howareyez! Al here. Living here in Esher in darkest Surrey. Originally from Dublin's fair city, I came to London for six months and I'm still here twenty years later. I've been plunking around on planks since I was a kid. Love Blues/Soul/Funk (who doesn't!) Love BC. The finest upstanding citizens of bottom-enders I've (n)ever met. Good honest opinions, chat, humour, and straight up bass business all being cooked up here in a great atmosphere of mutual support (a rare commodity these days) Keep up the good work one and all. Shalom Al
11. Hi. Interested in a Boss ME6B Bass multi-effects board? Pic attached is not actual board. I just got it from t'internet. But the board is in good working order.
12. Yep. Ditto with my HA3500. Noisy bugger. Its OK when gigging but you can really hear it otherwise. Good idea to give it a clean. Thanks. Mind you at gigs it breaks the silence at the end of the number caused by the distinct lack of applause! Hope the Dominican Republique Brothel gig was a good payer ... or did you spend it all on something!
13. I've been gigging one of these for about four years with the HA3500 head. Love it. Great punch, tone and all round attitude. Yep ... its a weighty bugger, but hey ..... put some decent castors on it and unless you're playing solo Jaco tributes then your drummer can help you carry it in and out .... Well you have to make some use of them !! Take a bump !
