1.
My question - other than price, what is the difference between relatively cheap ear plugs and the more expensive ones?
I think the main difference is the cheaper ones are aimed at protecting your ears more. Where as the more expensive (moulded) ones not only protect yours ears but don't cut anything out (I could be wrong). I think I've read that some people find the one-size-fits-all ear plugs a little uncomfortable during prolonged periods of use, I haven't found this an issue with my moulded ones after 5 or 6 hours of use.

My friend mentioned something about ''locking in with the drummer'' what the hell does that mean???
The rhythm section (you and the drummer) is responsible for setting the ground work of any song, a firm foundation for the lead players to build from. They are the backbone of the band. They create the framework that all the rest is built upon. This handles the roots and rhythm of the song and helps get the groove on track and keep it there for the duration of the song. People cannot sing along with a song they have never heard, but they can dance to it. The rhythm section is generally what people key into first.

I believe there are a whole host of guys and girls who teach bass using the forum, so they're probably better at giving advise then I am.

However, what I'd say is to practice. Play along to your favorite songs at home, throw in some changes while you're practising on your own and don't be scared to make mistakes, get creative or mix it up. I've always thought of bass at the link between the drums and guitar, you have to work with both. Guide the melody. There's tons of advise out there and you're in the right place for it.

  4. You may find this discussion helps regarding the more expensive ear protection: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=42721&hl=

I used ER20's for years and found them great, not sure how much they are now but they were around £15 a couple of years ago. I now use ER25's and they're also great.

Here's the ear plug sticky Dood mentioned.

  5.
yeah i checked out the Carbon Copy. Didn't know if it would work well with bass though
I like it! I use it quite sparsely with a phase 90 next in the line, at home I play around with it a lot more to get some nice swells out of it. Be careful with oscillating any delay as I've been told it can ruin your speakers on both guitar and bass amps.

  6. Quite surprised not to see Chris Wolstenholme in here yet. I know he gets some flack but I rate him.

I'm going to stick my neck out and nominate this guy called Lewis Reynolds who used to play bass in Surrey based band Meet Me In St. Louis before they split. He now plays for a band called Colour. Anyway, genuinely the best bass player I've seen and heard in a long time.

  7. Hi, I'm Alex and I'm from West Sussex.

Been playing bass for 12 years now and still passionate. Playing in a few band at the moment. Without Warrant is the proper band I play in, playing our own songs. I also play with a covers band called Something Ginger and I dep for another cover band called Malfunction from time to time.

Currently I'm playing a Gibson Thunderbird for all Without Warrant stuff. I also have a USA Fender Precision, Musicman Stingray and a Japanese Fender Jazz '75 re-issue which I switch between for other gigs (depending on how I feel).

Amp wise I have a Trace Elliot Series 6 AH300 with the TE 1048 cab for all large gigs. It weighs a ton but sounds nice. For smaller gigs and practice I have a Trace Elliot 715 SMC which is also wicked but considering a change sometime soon.

As for pedals I use a Boss TU-2 Tuner, SansAmp Bass Driver DI, Fulltone Bass-Drive, Zvex Woolly Mammoth, MXR Carbon Copy and an MXR Phase 90. I love pedals and have a bit of a weakness for them. I'd love to get an Akai Deep Impact but wouldn't love to pay the £300 plus they seem to be going for at the moment and a Line 6 FM4. Other than that I'm interested in most pedals.

Joined Basschat to see what gear people are loving at the moment and to see what people have for sale, Think I'd rather buy from a place like this than eBay. Also to help keep up with what's new in bass world.

    Love,

    Alex.
