The pickups look like De Armond Gold Tones.

Fender make an aluminium pickguard sized and shaped shield that goes underneath the whole of the normal pickguard. Here's one for a Strat ....

And this track in particular - the way the bass dances around the main vocal line yet always supports it. Still sounds good today.
