1.
this is exactly the same as my first fiver, and i actually regret selling it! brilliant fun wee bass
Couldnt agree more, i really wish i didn't have to sell this one. If you regret selling yours, interested in another? haha Thanks for your post, Dara
2. Hey, Im selling my Black Ibanez 5 string GSR205. With a Black CNB gig bag, D'addario strings, Black Schaller StrapLocks and Nylon Strap. Note, the strap in the pictures is not the one included. These basses retail for £240 new now and this bass is in very good condition, so I feel that an asking price of £100 is a fair ask. Its a great bass for Metal Heads or people who are just interested in dabbling in the 5 string range:) There are two marks on the top of the body and a small bit of belt rash on the back. Contact me on 07725176394 Dara
3. IMPORTANT NEWS: This bass is now sold - It went to the very nice Daniel Acheson from N.Ireland, hope he gets as much out of it as i did.
4. Thank you Gareth! I really do appreciate your input on this thread, i was almost second guessing if this was the right place to put the bass up for sale.... To any prospective buyers, the above explanation is exactly the reason that the bass is the price that it is, if anyone has any questions about the bass or would like to come view it in Glasgow/Edinburgh then please don't hesitate to let me know Thanks Dara
5. i understand where you are coming from but it was tom that stated the selling price, i.e his words are "sell for £1300", and price that it should be advertised is £1300, my price is £1200. As you will also see in the link above, Tom states that valuations are his specialty and it is only reasonable to assume that if they are widely accepted by major insurance companies that it is a reasonable and fair price. I do realize that to a new upright player (who sees this thread for the first time) may think that it is over priced, however i urge anyone who is interested to come and have a play on the bass for yourself! You really will be amazed. you can contact me through my profile:) I accept that some people may view this price as too high, but with all respect i find it hard to see how this can be judged without playing the bass in question and seeing it in the wood so to speak, does this rule not apply to any instrument? I would like to make it clear that I intend no offense to any party by stating this, it is just my opinion. Thank you for the interest so far and i hope to hear from any prospective buyers in the near future:) Dara
6. i appreciate your comment and hope that one day somebody does realise what is for sale, just want to clarify though, it was thomas martin who valued the bass and before he gave me the value i gave him the breakdown of the cots of set up etc. It was not me that put the £1200 price tag on thanks for your good wishes! Dara
7. carlitos 71 - yes you can buy the model new and unplayed for 850, the reason for the higher price is of course because of the setup, strings, case, and "opening up" in the wood form being played for many many hours. out to play jazz - thank you for re-iterating my comment, it is worth noting that you (any prospective buyer) aren't just buying a bass straight off the shelf, but the full deal that allows you to go straight into playing with no hassle for finding luthiers and such... also to anyone else interested, as out to play jazz mentioned, it is worth noting that this bass has been played, endorsed and VALUED by Thomas Martin, he is a very respected Double Bass player across the world and definitely knows his stuff when it comes to looking for basses.
8. Bump price reduction to 1200 ONO come on guys there has to be someone interested in a great deal like this!! dara
9. BUMP price reduction to 1200 ONO come on there has to be someone interesed on a great deal?? dara
10. hey, im currently selling a double bass from europe that you may be interested in... It is around the same price bracket as the stentor but they sound chalk and cheese when played next to each other, if your interested let me know:) If you want to go a level a bit above that you might want to have a look at the contrabasse shoppe website, they have some great old/new models that might suit! Hope you find what your looking for! Dara
11.
Is it the same as this one? http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_33_02.htm
Yes i believe it is the same Bass, thanks for posting that link, if there are any prospective buyers out there this site has embedded sound recordings of the bass. They give a good impression of the sound that the bass can produce, however the playing that has been done on the bass and the work/strings etc also make a big impact on the overall tone that is produced. Thanks Dara
12.
Looks like a nice starter bass. However, I think it isn't German. Probably from one of the Eastern European countries, such as Bulgaria, Romania or the Czech Republic.
Thanks for that, I'm not sure myself! I just stated as my valuer has told me to It is very possible that it is from one of the eastern European countries, ill let you know if I find out any more. I know I am slightly biased because im selling the bass but you are exactly right, It is perfect as a starter/intermediate bass. Thanks, Dara
13.
I'm not the only voice on DB Dara so I welcome the views of others. I think that we are actually closer in view than your 'slightly disagreeing' would suggest. I agree entirely about a good shape and getting energy into the finger, I was saying not curling too much rather than not at all, so I reckon we were saying roughly the same thing but from opposite directions. if you go back and look at the pics I have posted I have a reasonable curl, tell me what you think of them... Jake
Hey, yes my apologies it does seem that we are on the same track! Your fingers are exactly they way that I would position them on the fingerboard. The only difference between our had positions is the position of the thumb, especially on the upper positions. Again, I don't say this with the intention to fault your technique, as you state yourself you are a pro player and have been for 20 years. It may also be different styles of tuition. As i say, the only thing that I would change is to bring the thumb further around the neck as if it is running round onto the fingerboard. Not if you are stopping an F or F# with your 3/4th finger but definitely when your second finger stops the G octave. (Your photos didn't show what your hand position is like in a higher position after the neck) I applaud you for holding a career of 20 years with double bass, its a tough business and congratulations for what will hopefully continue to be a great career! Thanks again, Dara
14.
Use the pads of your fingertips rather than curling too much...
Hey, I understand that there are many teaching methods about and when it comes to Double Bass there's probably even more! I'm currently studying with Thomas Martin at the RSAMD and this is one thing that i would slightly disagree with, you need to make sure there is a good shape to your finger, especially not flat and I would say that you need to have a good curl so that you are using the round tip of your finger rather than your pad, it allows you to add more shape and make a really strong tonal centre, and its easier to move if your intonation is out! jakesbass, im not intending to detract from your ability as a player as I'm sure there is no question there, i just wanted to include my own bit of insight:) Dara
15. I'm currently in the market of selling my old bass and buying a new bass and i agree with a lot of the points that are made here, sorry if the point I'm about to make has already been said, but i think the basses that are selling as bottom of the range fully carved and made in Europe will hold there value. If not increase marginally because of the fact that so many people go for"old" basses not necessarily for the look of them but because the tone and music that can be created by an instrument that has had a pair of chops on it for a few years just opens it out. there is no doubt that if you spend 50K on an instrument that you will be getting something good, at least its very hard to find a bad instrument for 50k but for a serious beginner, don't cut yourself short. spending £3-400 on a Chinese bass may be all well and good and you could keep it going for a year or so, but by making that little jump to the 1k mark you can quite easily get something special. Thats just IMHO, because its how I've experienced the "old school bass" and the "teachers instrument that you really really want" and the complete contrast in the two, you can get a good bass for cheap, but not too cheap!
16. Hey guys and gals, Here's the link to the page in the "for sale" section http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=upright+bass Enjoy! Dara Now SOLD: It went to the very nice Daniel Acheson from N.Ireland, hope he gets as much out of it as i did.
17. Hey fellow basschatters!, Before you read further this is a quote from Thomas Martin, Excellent Solo Double Bass Teacher/Performer, when he played my bass for one of our lessons... "Usually with these basses the tone isn't that great and the playability isn't the best...but this bass...WOW, definitely a unique find, perfect for casual gigs or student/semi pro." If you would like to check Toms credentials out his website is www.thomasmartin.co.uk however I'm sure most of you could relate to him also being the teacher of the Great John Patitucci, and many more. ANYWAY The bass is a Model Purchased from Thomann.co.uk here is their description, THOMANN DOUBLE BASS 33, MADE BY THE HORA COMPANY fully carved (for those who dont know what this means, it means the bass has not been laminated and is hand varnished.) 3/4 double bass with carved spruce top and flat carved maple back, round ebony fingerboard, Tirolean machines, adjustable peg, scale length ca.105cm, made in Europe ! I have also had work done on the fingerboard and bridge and adjusters put onto the bridge. The work was carried out by Ken McDonald of Edinburgh, a very skilled luthier specializing in Double Basses. There is also a gig bag included from "tomandwill.com" These cases are excellent and have kept the bass in pristine condition whenever I've been transporting it. This new thickly padded double bass case from Tom and Will provides 25mm of padded protection while remaining lightweight for easy portability. This is a top quality case which surpasses many of its more expensive rivals! Quite simply, the best value double bass gig bag available today Features include: - 3 Tom and WIll GripEZE padded carrying handles on sides, for extra ease of transportation - Bow pocket has rigid lining for extra added protection - Strongly stitched nylon eyelets on sides of case - perfect if the case needs to be secured in an upright position e.g. when in transit - Rubberized anti-scuff patches fitted around outside of case for extra protection - Ergonomically-shaped padded shoulder straps for extra comfort, attached by strong trigger clasps - Extra stability provided by extra straps on body of bag which clip onto the shoulder straps - 4 extra padded handles along the front of the case, for extra maneuverability - 2 large sheet music pockets in back of case - Accessory pouch on front of case, perfect for rosin, tuner etc. - Heavy-duty zip fasteners, along full length of case, for ease of use The bass also comes with relatively new D'addario Hybrid strings. The bass has been played almost every day for the past 2 and a half years and it has taken me through my first year of study at Scotland's RSAMD. It is ideal for anyone from the electric bassist who wants to try the Double Bass, Students getting lessons through school and college or as a great value bass for those who play in ceilidh/jazz bands for low key functions. The wood has opened up to produce a huge "fat" sound that really supports a rhythm section. The only reason that I am selling this on is that i have come across some money to buy a new bass through my teacher and well, student flats don't allow enough room for one double bass let alone two!! Please note there is no bow included in the price. I have had the bass valued by Tom Martin at the very reasonable price of £1250 ONO including gig bag, strings and work that has been done on the bass. It really is a great deal and if you are in the Glasgow/Edinburgh area, you are more than welcome to come round and have a play. As far as delivery goes, collection would be nice but for expenses and a little bit extra, I'm willing to get a train to anywhere on a main line and meet you at the station. Pics will follow very soon! Cheers! Dara p.s pics now added!!!
18. Hey everyone! Thanks for all the info!It was really weird to log into my e-mail and see that a reply had been made to my post....I forgot I had even made a post! Funnily enough i hadnt even made a decision about where to buy the plate from yet, was putting it off as the student lifestyle dosent really allow for a purchase of £55! So ive mailed bassblock about his scratchplate and hopefully the info that has been put up in this thread will help somebody else:) p.s DM music didnt used to have the array of plates it does now and after having a look there are loads of different designs that might be worth having a look at if anyone else is interested, I had considered aurora music but didnt try them out so i cant vouch for anything said about them in the thread. thanks again guys! dara
19.
Hi all, I have an iAmp 350 with the case. This is the separate version
Do you mean it is separate head and cab or just the head on its own? any pics? thanks dara
20. Right, this is my first post and i only had a 5 min look through older posts but couldnt see anything that could answr my questions, if i am wrong, feel free to post a link to the answering page anyhooo i have recently bought a 2009 AM Deluxe 5 string Jazz for my 18th and i ordered the montego black finish, not realizing it came with a nasty looking 'beveled gold' scratch plate. I would like to change this to a nice tort shell finish. I have contacted fender and they have just said that the don't sell the tort scratchplate as a spare and recommended me to allparts and dm music, allparts was a bust because unfortunately the AM deluxe has a 9 hole scratchplate not a standard 10 or 11 hole, which are the only ones allparts stock. so tried DM music and bit more success in the shape of having to get one custom made with a shiny pricetag of £55. I have resigned myself to the fact that i may have to bite the bullet and get the custom plate, but if anyone else knows of a place that i can either a) get a tort 9 hole scratchplae or no of somewhere cheap to get a custom one. now i am not in the habit of buying custom scratchplates so if you read this and think im being crazy not getting the scratchplate for £55 please let me know as well hope there is someone out there with an answer for meeee thanks dara
21. would you consider splitting? im interested in the 410 but dont have a need for the 1512. The whole rig looks awsome, but i couldnt justify that amount of amp-age in my house.
22. hey, im very interested in this bass but i can't seem to see any photos on the website above...anychance you could post some on the original thread? also is this the american standard? thanks! dara
