I would say it's a sensible upgrade. Every time I've restrung a bass fitted with a Gibson 3 pointer it's exploded bits of saddle everywhere.

Hmmm... just wondering if you might have lost something tone wise there.I think Cassidy spent a long time with that floating bridge over that thin bit of hollow ply.

the bridge falls out when first purchased but once the pegs are glued and setup you really never have to deal with it ever again.

I'd go with that list plus

P.S. Bonus point for spelling Jack's name correctly, but Ashley's surname is Hutchings 😀

you beat me to it...  notable track was grey seal on yellow brick road, his tone and what he played on it was just out of this world.

  3. pretty sure this is the bass used in that live banhees nocturene gig at the royal albert hall, probably saw some action with the glove since this was about the same time severin was collaborating with robert smith. Its a fairly iconic bass.

if i was stupid rich i would pick this up in a heartbeat...

+1 on the Peavey G-Basses. Fantastic instruments. Their reputation has pushed their prices up recently though.

I think this Klos lot have missed a trick - most bass players who'd be interested in a graphite-necked instrument would probably be more likely to play 5- or 6-strings, and they're not offering them, nor do they appear to have any plans to.

Just googling status graphite, most of what comes up is four stringers.

  5. Anyone got suggestions for split fingers ...they are basically split fissures and bass playing is probably the last thing I should be doing with this problem ...those gloves or finger tip things look interesting but do they work for this condition...it’s painful as hell, literally there can be blood on the strings at which point I have to stop playing. Finger tips on both hands are effected.

I go thru periods like that too. In 80's i had a fretless P then a WAL altho the WAL had a slector switch that gave you a click type sound similar to playing a fretted bass. I think it boosted a specific high frequency. I liked that. My Overwater has same.

Also had a Jaydee fretless and Yamaha fretless but like you i get bored and lack inspiration mainly because its not the style of music i play in bands where a 4 string fretted just works better ........ for me anyways.

A fretless can be played much like a fretted...Jack Bruce comes to mind

  7. My finances are a bit low (1000 quid refinish yikes!) so I’m thinking of just heat gunning off the poly shell to my stingray and applying a gun oil finish, after nearly three decades in humid asia the paint is literally falling off it in chunks and looks terrible, poly does not age gracefully at all.

...I’m half expecting the bass might sound even better without this layer of plastic around it, I only hope the wood looks ok and is not some offcut that they used because it was going to get painted..

☝☝☝This, all day long. JJ kind of knocked everyone else into a cocked hat (apart from Mick Karn). Those first two notes, I want to give up bass and collect stamps as soon as I hear them.

So funny to think Burnel’s signature sound was linked to a ripped speaker cone that he never knew was there ...
