Love this version of La Bamba.  Los Lobos are a great band from east LA, and they apparently got a bit fed up of everyone thinking this song defined them. Formed in 1973 and still with the same 4 original members, they've made some great albums in both Spanish and English. I've seen them twice, and they did a great acoustic section of traditional Mexican material ( like La Bamba is of course).

I would add the original pop version by Ritchie Valence. The song is real ear worm and a blast to play and sing.

  2. Not SkyArts but on BBC4 early last evening Singer Songwriters,  the caption writer made an interesting error. Calling Carol King, Carol Klein.
Klein is her birth name of course, but it’s very unusual to see it used and I’d guess not many people would know.

Carol Klein is a regular on the BBC’s Gardeners World. Maybe the caption writer is a gardener.

  3. I caught their fairwell/revival/final, whatever you want to call it tour show in London.
Very embarrassing..It was like a shambolic un rehearsed jam session.
Levon was obviously ill and looked to be on the point of collapsing.
So bad we walked out before the interval.
    They really shouldn’t have bothered.

Was it Gordon Brown (as Chancellor) who found out that if you put taxes up too much the overall revenue goes down?

Hopefully this will happen here, but I doubt it.

His predecessor in the 60’s realised this. A 90% top rate persuaded many high earners, including pop stars, to move overseas. It didn’t last long.
George Harrison’s Tax Man for reference.

Have there been many other acts which play one band's music in another band style? Depeche Mode played à la Madness would be a fun live experience.

Haysead Dixie obviously comes to mind.
And Luther Wright & the Wrongs' Rebuild the Wall is an entire bluegrass version of Pink Floyd's The Wall that's worth checking out.

  6. Porridge and the Hubcaps.
They were great until the wheels came off.
Poor old Porridge later succumbed to serious injuries while playing heavy metal versions of bluegrass classics on an electric gas stove.
Their only vinyl album is no longer available as all copies were turned into weirdly shaped fruit dishes by the application of heat.

  7. Has anyone here made their own case, or undertaken repairs?

I’m looking for a source of the black fluffy material that lines most of the hard cases.
I need to create some padding in a case that is slightly too large for the bass.

  8. My band was on the same bill as Flash Harry. A very fine Queen tribute.
    And I knew The Beagles.

Slightly off topic a solo act I saw one evening singing to backing tracks,  was being Neil Diamond quite well. And in the second half, with a different wig, he was being Tom Jones.

The Smiths, I hated them when they first came out, went to see them on their first tour (only because we had guest tickets) and only stayed for about 5 songs, ignored them for 10 years or more, mellowed slightly, quite liked a few songs for a bit......didn't listen to them again for a while, played a few songs recently and decided young me was correct and they are pants!

I never understood the gushing praise so called intelligent people gave them. How could people listen to that whining monotonous voice mouthing lyrics that sounded like they were written by a 6 year old.
The band was probably ok, but it needed a decent singer and an adult song writer.

  10. I started this thread as a result of an involvement in recording a version of Brown Eyed Girl. A song I’ve been playing live for many years and as a result of the recording, realised I had been playing it wrong.
Obviously not so wrong as to be noticeable enough to get complaints.
A request to record Stuck in The Middle With You, another very recognisable bass riff on the original record.  Again I have not been playing the correct original riff for many years.
In my defence I have been playing the Jeff Healey version, which in my opinion is much the better version anyway. And it will do for this recording.

I’ve seen Emmy a couple of times, with The Hot Band. Am a fan of Rodney Crowell too, who is in the band on the OGWT programme. I do prefer her earlier stuff but appreciate the way she moved with the times on the Daniel Lanois album and later work. A great artist.

I wasn’t too sure about Wrecking Ball, so different to her previous output. But I did go and see her when she came to the UK with Buddy Miller, and Daryl Johnson on bass. Miller quite obviously the MD on that tour.

Just read in the TV schedules that this Friday (7th May)  there is an evening of Emmylou Harris stuff on BBC4. Starts at 9pm and includes an OGWT special from 1977 that I remember being great.

I’ve seen her live a number of times, she was always worth the ticket price. Especially with the Hot Band.
Although her diction can sometimes be annoying. She’s good to look at too.
