By way of a 1st declaration of intent I'm going to be putting 4 basses up for sale in the next month or so. This is a 'feeler'. No pictures or prices at the moment but if anyone is interested please pm me and I can sort out piccies etc. Every bass is in really good nick with good strings and well fettled. In the left corner, the undisputed ..... My Cobalt blue pearl Bongo 5 with H/S pickup configuration. Slight mark on the end of the headstock, more paintwork than substance. This bass sounds really impressive, very 'woody' to my ear (mids?). Comes with original and white pearloid pickguards. In pole.... Zoot Iceni custom 5 string lined fretless. Armstong pickups H/S again with Aguilar 18v pre. Awesome beast. A rare breed, my Les Evans 4. Luthiered in Merseyside and a very individual bass with a John East U Retro pre. The neck on this one is very 'V' profile and it's a very beautifully sculpted body in understated but strangely effective grey. From the Orient via the good ol' US of A a Lakland JO5 in light blue with Mint and white pearloid pickguards. Pretty much 'top dollar sailor' . So that's it. Keeping the Harlot (obviously), Warwick FNA fretless, Lakky BG, Bass Collection P/J 4 and Yam BB5000 so I'm not leaving myself short. If any of the above seriously 'float ur boat' then let me know. I don't really have time to get them all photo'd at the mo for the amusement of all and sundry but will get around to it. -
Amazon is your place to go to refresh your memory, as previously suggested. A very useful resource imo even if your not buying. Peter

I suppose it all depends on what music you like in the 1st place. 'Badge' works great for me at the moment. There's a lot of Cream tracks that work well with a fretless. Peter

Err that'd be Primus. For easy entry into their music I'd personally recomment 'Frizzle Fry'. Great stuff.

Which is why my fretless is a 4.

I find that lowering the action produces the Mwaah but too much and it 'chokes' the string. Even with the above I've found that every fretless I've owned has more Mwaah on the lighter gauge strings and that the B on a 5 is pretty much Mwaahless

Have a great hol, did Crete in the Navy as a Rating in whites, mind that was in the early 70's It was great. Peter

I would go a bit further. [b][size=7]Upper Horn basses - Why?[/size][/b] Given that your thumb doesn't go over the neck what's its purpose other than putting the strap button in the right place, so why not have it going all the way down to the neck? Apologies for the bigger than intended font

Price wise I don't think that there is a 'standard' price just as Alan doesn't really make a 'standard' bass. Price is between Alan and yourself according to spec. Some prices are shocking and make you frown, some are shocking and make you smile. Alan's are to me the latter. Peter

I thought I'd better add my ACG comments in the thread it really belongs to There's only one thing in my bass life that's better than having a bass made by Alan and seeing photos of it, and that's actually having your mitts on it. As of 11 am today I did just that. The real thing is even better than I anticipated (and that's really something). The quality is peerless and the pre-amp is intuitive although I've only just started my sonic exploration. Alan's neck shaping is amazing as the neck is shallow and assymetric, it's a real piece of art, that works. Upper fret access to the 24th is brilliant and the bass makes me want to learn to play it to a level that suits its quality and ability. Absolutely dead chuffed Alan a big public thank you!

Hehe, 'The meaning of your communication is the response you get'. I like that. NLP stuff that took a while for me to understand. Any language, written or otherwise will always be inadequate. I think that's a major reason there's so much misunderstanding in our human society worldwide. Peter

'Not my cuppa', 'not to my taste', 'doesn't do it for me' etc are great as they are statments about the individuals taste and opinion. Even 'I think it just looks pants!' would be fine. All I find a bit out of order are 'global statements' like in this case 'just looks pants', especially when someone is either airing their pride and joy or trying to sell it. Call me picky Yes some folks do misrepresent their gear or price it too high but a polite pm, at least initially is I feel the way to go. It's usually a genuine mistake or lack of market awareness. A complaint! This is a forum ferrcrissakes, can't it be sorted in the open, err, sorta 'forum'?

There are ways to say things and ways not to perhaps. Can understand why the guy is a bit miffed myself and is it really necessary to labelthis beautiful bass 'Pants'. You may not like it but does that make it so? I don't suppose he'll be back.
