1. Thanks much appreciated! Definitely some stuff there to add to the list! Lol looks like another long night about to be spent on tab sites and Youtube!
2. Ok i would never have agreed to this sober but after a few beers it all seemed like a good idea after a load more beers it was all happily agreed! Now we are sober reality has dawned and we're totally in the s*** ! I haven't been playing for too long i've only just joined my first band and we're only rehearsing at the moment. The other night a few of us were in the pub and one of my mates brothers is about to have his 40th birthday at new year he's having a party and wants a band for it. Somewhere in this 4 hour drunken conversation it was decided that between us there are 2 guitarists,a bassist and a wannabe singer so we should form a band for the event.A drummer mate of the birthday boy has just been bullied into doing the gig as well so it looks like there's no going back lol it's amazing the power of feeding people free beer and promising them more. Now we are trying to come up with an easy to learn set list of rock covers and some blues covers in the vain hope that we can get our act together in time! I know a few covers i've been doing with my own band but not quite enough to fill a set list for a party. Any suggestions for easy stuff to learn please and also any advice on learning songs quickly or should i just leave the country and come back when it's over
3. Cheers Stag! We're going to a few gigs in the next couple of weeks at places we're likely to get gigs at so i'm going to have a good look/listen at what the other bands are using and speak to a few of them about their gear. Also might try to get to the bass bash in Gateshead.
4. Mmm The Gateshead bash could be a possibilty if i'm not working! I'm liking the plastic sticks idea lol i reckon a plastic drum kit to go with it would be good as well! I'm still learning to dodge the sticks he breaks! I'm thinking of being the only bassist who stands behind the drummer when we start gigging
5. Cheers Apex the band is 5 of us although the singer is just doing vocals the rest is 2 guitars me on bass and a drummer who only knows one level LOUD lol. We're mainly doing rock covers for the moment. The bass bash would probably be a good idea if there's one close enough to me! Is there any coming up in Scotland? Cheers Mr Foxen i wish i was closer to it unfortunately i'm stuck in Scotland so collection would be a nightmare.
6.
If you have the luxury of a bit of time to choose, going modular with amp and cab is easier on the carrying and the modifying. Ashdown heads are cheap and there are plenty about, and you could probably do better on a cab, as the lower level Ashdowns aren't spectacular. A peavey 4x10 is heavy but sounds great.
I do have a little bit of time to choose as we're only rehearsing at the moment so it's going to be a few weeks before we are sorted enough to look for gigs. Also going to take me a couple of weeks to get the cash in from the stuff i'm selling to pay for it! It looks like amp and cab are the way to go most of the people i've spoken to are saying i'm best with an amp and cab rather than the combo!
7. Thanks i'll have a look at the Ashdown Combos.
8. Yep i just checked the ad apparently it weighs 50lbs! I'm still tempted though i better see if the the rest of the band were serious about not minding the weight as long as it's a good amp!
9. Thanks LOL i'm a girl and currently got a wrecked shoulder so probably couldn't lift it but there's 4 guys in the band so i'm not too worried about the weight! Will have a look at it! How heavy is the Firebass?
10. Sorry i know this probably gets asked continually but i'm confused with all the options and need some help! This is my first band i've done a few jam sessions but never actually played in a band before so all i have is a 65 watt practice amp My budget is probably going to be around 250-300 depending on how much i get for the stuff i'm selling to fund the amp purchase.I'm obviously looking for 2nd hand as i'm not going to get very far buying new for that price. Should i go for a combo or buy seperate amp and cab. How many watts do i need i've been told not to buy less than a 300w but not sure if this is right or wrong most of the gigs we'll be doing are rock pubs/clubs. Any suggestions on which amps i should consider?
11. I had the Peavey Millenium as one of my first basses they're pretty good for an entry level bass the slim neck is great for smaller hands as well. The Peavey was the only bass i bought new 2nd hand gets you much more for the cash! Go to a shop and have a play with as many basses as you can then decide what you like even if it's out of your price range there have been some pretty good basses in the for sale section here for under £150!
12. Nice! Shame i got no cash till the end of next month! Have a bump anyway!
13. Thanks for all the info and the offer to try your G&Ls dub junkie unfortunately i'm stuck in Edinburgh with no transport at the moment otherwise i woud've taken you up on that offer! Cheers boabskiboab i've been trying to find somewhere that sold them in Scotland and couldn't find anywhere. Kirkcaldys only a half hour train ride from here so i might nip over this week and have a look!
14.
the l2000/2500 hundreds are amazing.i have a 5 string for sale, you are more than welcome to come and try it if you are in the south wales area for an idea on the sounds.i played a few over the years and they seem to do much more than fenders and music man basses.really good bits of kit, i will not bother asking what styles of music you play, if you get one it wont matter as the bass will cope with it.t
Thanks for the offer unfortunately i'm in Scotland. I did look at your 5 string in the for sale section it's a great looking bass and i was seriously tempted but i don't know how i would get on with 5 strings lol sometimes i still struggle with 4! I'm definitely starting to favour the G&L over the P bass!
15.
I have a Tribute and I'd find it hard to imagine that the US model is significantly better (I'd not turn one down though). I think the necks are a bit anemic looking on the Tribby and mine isn't light but it's very well assembled and sounds superb. Such a versatile bass, more so than a P I'd guess, a strong output too even in passive. I like the way that such variety is available even before you reach for the tone controls with neck/both/bridge : Parallel/Series : Passive/Active/Bright Active switches (3). The pups and electrics are the same as the US models too. I'd get one over a P bass personally
Thanks GreeneKing much appreciated!
16. Jut when i thought i'd made my mind up to buy a Fender P bass i seen a guy playing a G&L L2000 at a gig the other night and it sounded great. I spoke to the guy after the gig and he reckons it's one of the best basses he's ever owned! The guy let me have a quick shot of his bass unplugged and it felt great but he did say the neck on his one was thinner than the other G&Ls he had seen before he bought that one! I'm guessing that certain models had the thinner neck or maybe this one was custom made the guy wasn't sure as he bought it 2nd hand? I'm now kinda tempted to go for the G&L instead of the Fender so i'd love to hear the opinions of any body on here who's played or owned one before i go looking! I'm probably going to have to stick with a Tribute unless i find a USA cheap enough at the moment as some of my bass cash got eaten by a huge car bill! Unless the difference between them is huge in which case i might be tempted to wait and save some more!
17. Wish i lived closer to Gloucester! Would you consider posting??

20.
Basically if you pick a good one, they've all got the potential to be good instruments. Some of the more recent MIM's I've played have played and sounded fantastic. The CIJ models have lovely fit & finish with glossed necks, usually. Just a case of trying as many as you can & deciding what you're happiest with One example, though... I was in a shop the other week & I played the classic 50's Precision (black with the anodised gold guard), but a much cheaper Squier Classic Vibe Jazz blew it out of the water for sound, output, playability, quality, etc. Don't forget the cheaper cousins. You may be very pleasantly surprised. In fact, there's a sonic blue 60's Precision on the for sale pages at the moment. £200. Can't go wrong!
Thanks i've read a lot of good stuff about the Squiers lately but i think i've been put off by the fact my first bass was a Squier and it was a nightmare. I made the classic beginners mistake of buying it on ebay without really knowing what i was looking at so i ended up with a rubbish sounding bass with action like the Forth Bridge and dodgy electrics! I know i shouldn't base my thoughts of Squier on one really bad one so might see if i can find one of the new ones to have a play with!
21.
I have seen them for £500+ in the shops/online. £350 sounds good. FYI, I got my guard made by a company called jeannie pickguards in the US. So they can make you a guard, without you having to send them your guard, as they made a templete from mine.
Nice one much appreciated! Don't know why but the gold one just doesn't do it for me at all i'm sure some folk love it but just not my thing!
22.
Nice. Aye. US pickups and 'lectrics. Fender parts list
Thanks for the link! Is £350 around the normal 2nd hand price for these? The bass seems pretty much perfect in the pics. The guy said it had hardly been touched he bought it for his girlfriend to learn on and she lost interest when it didn't play itself after 2 weeks he was going to keep it as back up but now needs the cash to blow on a Stingray!
23. Thanks i've just spoken to the guy so i'm going to have a look at it on Sunday! Yours looks great with black pick guard if i buy this one the gold pick guard thats on it is getting dumped at the earliest opportunity!
24.
Aye, I've got a passive one. If it's an active one, it will probably have a maple board on it. Both the passive and the active have US pickups, the active has the samarium cobolt noiseless ones. - That's maybe something to consider. I swapped the neck on mine to a p bass one. But then I've got big grubby hands and don't really like standard jazz necks. Although, it's a nice neck to look at. Lovely figuring and really well finished.
Thanks for the info i didn't realise they were available in passive as well or that the pick ups were US! This one has the rosewood board on it but is listed as active i think it is an 08 model as the owner says in the ad he bought it new last year. Might try to escape from work this weekend and nip over and see it!
